Just Be Free's topic about hearing an obscure song at the mall earlier today inspired me to create this topic. What are some songs that you've heard at places like the grocery store, the department store, the mall, or at a restaurant?
The other day, when I was eating dinner at Fazzoli's, I heard the song "There Must Be An Angel (Playing With My Heart)" by the Eurythmics. I was pleasantly surprised to hear that song, even though I'd heard it recently on one of my AT40 Flashback CD's. But hearing it unexpectedly like that was cool. The next song they played I hadn't heard on the radio for awhile either, "Lido Shuffle" by Boz Scaggs (although that's nowhere near as obscure as the aforementioned Eurythmics song). Two obscure songs I remember hearing in the spring of 2001 were "Private Emotion" by Ricky Martin & Meja at the Marquette Mall in Michigan City (and, since we all know how much I love that song, I think it goes without saying that I walked around in the hall listening to it). The other song, which I heard a month early (in late April, 2001) was "Breaking In To The Past" by Jane Kelley Williams, which I heard at Osco Drugs. I like that song, but since I'd made my purchase as the song started and I was in a hurry (I had tons of errands to run that day and besides, I have the song on tape), I didn't stick around to listen to it. Other than that, I don't remember any hearing unusual songs at the store (though I'm sure there have been many more - I just can't think of them right now). Any of you ever heard any such songs recently?

In August 1985, Baltimora's "Tarzan Boy" and specifically its Tarzan yell followed me around to various sites in France without me knowing what it was until I got back home.
In June 1986, I heard excerpts of the non-vocal parts of Magazine 60's dance hit "Don Quichotte" throughout malls in France (yes again), but didn't find out what it was until I heard it when visiting New York City in September that year.

I was pleasantly surprised when I heard Enya's "Wild Child" at the grocery store the other day.
In the summer of 1994, some of us co-workers went to Shoney's for breakfast and I heard "Go Insane" by Lindsey Buckingham. It was pretty obscure back then too. :)

Have you ever gone into a store just to hear the song they have on playing? :) I remember I went into Foot Locker because they had "Girl Talk" on!Β Also, um.. forgot the name of this other shoe store.. but they had "No Scrubs" on while I was looking for some new shoes. When I was in Vegas this past November, I heard "Hands Up (So So Def Remix)" coming out of a club on the strip.Β It was called Seven I think. I also heard "Damaged" one time at El Torito!

'Doing The Unstuck' by The Cure while shopping for groceries.
And as an honorable mention (I didn't witness this, but a friend did)...'39' by The Cure played over the loudspeakers at closing time at the Chicago Board of Trade.

Debelah Morgan's "I Remember (Darkchild remix)" at JC Penny!
My sister heard Myra's "Siempre Hay Milagros" at Chevy's. :)
I heard Soluna's "Monday Mi Amor" at Sportmart, as well as Angela Via's "Picture Perfect" (once I heard that, I bought the first shoes I saw! :))

Let's see I've heard "Hey DJ" by A Lighter Shade Of Brown at Taco Bell. I just stopped eating and listened real close to it. I heard "Hero" by David Crosby and Phil Collins. Another favorite of mine I heard at Shopko was "You Can't Deny It" by Lisa Stansfield.

I heard Natalie Merchant's Break Your Heart in a McDonalds once. I also heard Shawn Colvin's You And the Mona Lisa at Fuddruckers.

Obscure doesn't necessarily relate to how high the song peaked on the chart; it just means something radio stations don't play much, if at all, anymore. For instance, "What I Like About You" by the Romantics peaked somewhere in the 40s in early 1980, but 80s-based radio stations play that song a lot nowadays. On the other hand, "Praying For Time" by George Michael was a big #1 hit in 1990, but what radio station plays that song anymore? I'd say that "Go Insane" (which didn't quite crack the Top 20 on R&R) would count as an obscure song.

I heard 'You And The Mona Lisa' at McDonald's a few months ago too!... or was it 'Sunny Came Home'. It WAS 'SCH' but maybe the other as well.
Today at the Superstore (grocery store), I heard 'Walk In The Sun' by Bruce Hornsby. VERY minor pop hit for him in 1995. Woulda been the first time in 9 years I heard it had I not downloaded it last year.
Once I heard 'Nothing In Return' by Alanis in a mall.
On several occations I've heard 'Weight Of The World' by Chantal in Zellars and malls and such.

Woulda been the first time in 9 years I heard it had I not downloaded it last year. Yeah, I was rather surprised it didn't do any better for him. When it debuted at 38 that one week, I expected it to come close to hitting the Top 30 the week after, then it fell to 39 and left the chart the next week. Then again, since "Fields Of Grey", which WITS sounds a lot like, only got as high as 34 about two years before, I guess it figured that the song didn't do well.

I heard "The Real Love" by Bob Seger at a Big Lots department store this afternoon. The next song they played was "Fool (If You Think It's Over)" by Chris Rea. The strange thing is, it sounded a lot different than I remember it. It seemed to be in a lower key, and wasn't there a key change when he got to the chorus?

I hear obscure songs quite often in stores. Over the weekend I heard Zhane's "Hey Mr. DJ" in a fast food restaurant.

I went to the gym this evening and I heard "Right Beside You" by Sophie B. Hawkins, which was one of the best songs of 1994.

I've heard "Love Song" by Sky at a few grocery stores (not in Canada, since I know it hit #1 there.) Also "Why Oh Why" by ATC.

Yeah, that's the one. All I could think of was Rec and Michelle N'Degeocello and I knew it wasn't them.

I heard "Visions of Paradise" by Mick Jagger at Applebee's last year.Β Couldn't believe it.Β The only reason I even recognized it is cuz of the Rob Thomas connection.Β I'd never heard the entire song before.Β Just on the Behind the Music for MB20.Β
I heard Last Beautiful Girl by MB20 last year too.Β I barely heard this when it was released as a single, so to hear it in Designers Shoe Warehouse was a pleasant surprise.
And a really surprising one to me was hearing the muzak version of Run by Collective Soul in Stein Mart barely a half hour after I had bought CS's Dosage CD at a re-sale shop.Β Very coincidental.Β
And then I heard "No More, No Less" by Collective Soul at Einstein Bagels.Β What was really surprising was that I had just been listening to the exact same song in my car on a CD. Walked into the bagel store and it was playing on their muzak system.Β Very strange!
