I have to say this is a strong group of nominees. Good for the Grammys! I love that they found Patty Loveless' stellar release, and it's good to see Trisha, Lee Ann, and LeAnn get in Country Female (it's too bad Martina got in there for her lame single). It was also cool to see they somehow found The SteelDrivers. I've also heard good things about Jamey Johnson's CD, but I haven't heard it yet. Still, it seems like there was some real thought put into these nominations.

Isn't it kind of amazing to think that George Strait has never won a Grammy? I think it's more amazing that Martina has never taken one home. The awards are for best vocal performances and she is the best vocal performer in female country history. Huh? She sings every song in almost the same way; she just builds it so she can belt a big note and hold it. Blah.

^ I agree. I thought "Gunpowder & Lead" was a shoe-in for Best Female Vocal and Best Song, for sure.

Im shocked that Martina got nominated when Miranda didnt. GaL is the real stellar song I agree that G&L is a much better song than "For These Times" (which is my least favorite Martina single, ever), but if the award is for vocal performance, I think that Martina still has Miranda beat. Not that Miranda sounds bad or anything, I think she pulls the song off quite will with all of her energy, but Martina's vocals are still in a class of their own (just my opinion, of course).

just because it is a "vocal" award doesnt necessarily mean that the noms are given to the best singers...if thats the case martina would have won already, and others like carrie underwood and such would always be the frontrunners...its alot to do with the song itself(production etc), how its sung, not necessarily who sings the loudest or holds the longest note. just please give this to martina if it means not nominating her every year, for every damn song she releases lol

ediy: maybe in country they give noms to the best singers for the most part, but every other genre doesnt....amy winehouse, nelly furtado, norah jones, alicia keys...these 4 are just examples of singers who arent necessarily the "best" vocalists, but they sound great with the material they have.

By definition the award is for "vocal performance," but it's clear the award (and I mean this for all genres, not just country) is more often for 'best sing' or something. Country Female does tend to reward good vocalists, but let's not forget that Gretchen Wilson won the category for "Redneck Woman." Pop Female in particular, though, seems to be more "Best female single" than "Best female vocal."

I tend to agree that Miranda should have had the nomination over Martina. To me FTT was just an awful song with the same ole, same ole over singing , preaching that has become the norm for Martina in these times. She is no longer the preeminent female vocalist in country.imo

2009 Grammy Performers I can't access the main Country/America section, so I don't know if this has been posted before, but... Kenny Chesney and Carrie Underwood are the only Country performers currently scheduled for the Grammy awards. Here is the Current (as of Jan. 20) list of Performers for the 2009 Grammys: Coldplay Kenny Chesney Jennifer Hudson Jonas Brothers Lil Wayne Katy Perry Carrie Underwood Grammy.com / CMT.com

Does anyone ever think we might be tired of seeing only Carrie perform at every awards show? What are her big nominations that she deserves this slot? Hopefully the Grammys will pull a typical and she'll perform but not win.

Hmm maybe she is asked because she has a good voice and brings in viewers? You are obviously in the minority... thankfully :)

^^^ Yeah Carrie is asked because she really does bring in viewers and always has amazing performances! That's not just opinion either but based on viewer stats, standing Os, and reviews!

When in comes to genre-specific artists, they should at least invite those with the most nominees. I was hoping they would ask Trisha and/or Jamey to perform, but alas, looks like that's too much to ask for. NARAS may care about quality, but the show itself still regards rating the most important, after all... :'(

^ Many of us were (pleasantly) surprised that Carrie was asked to perform, but it makes sense if you think about it. I like all 5 ladies that were nominated this year, but I think Carrie was likely picked for several reasons. She is one of the best live performers of the ladies, she brings in tv ratings as she is very popular, and she also had a big 2008 (with 4 number 1 hits, almost 3x platinum, etc.). I love Trisha too and would love to see her perform a duet with Carrie. That would be my dream performance. Leanne Rimes and Leanne Womak are also very talented, and I love the songs they were nominated for, but they are not that popular with the mainstream fans right now, so I can see why they might not perform. Martina's song is my least favorite on this new album, so I wish she had submitted something different. She is way too talented to be without a grammy. However, Miranda should have been nominated this year instead of Martina.
Grammy Predictions: This is a tough year to predict winners, as it is pretty close in several categories... but here are my picks.
Country Collab: Should win---- Keith Urban and Trisha Will Win--- George and Kenny (hate Shiftwork though, sorry).
Album: Should Win-Trisha Will Win- George Strait
Male Vocal: Should Win-- James Otto or Brad Paisely Will Win- Brad Paisely
Female Vocal: Should Win-- Carrie or Trisha Will Win: Carrie or Trisha*
* I honestly cannot predict this category except to say it will be between Carrie and Trisha. Carrie should have submitted Just a Dream this year instead of waiting until next year to submit it, as it is the strongest song and vocal performance of the year. Last Name is still good though so I think it has a chance, but I would call it an under-dog to the favorite Trisha. All 5 ladies are very talented and I like 4 of the 5 songs (excluding Martina's song. Love Martina, hate the song) Leanne Womak is the Dark Horse winner here.
Country Song: Should Win-- Stay Will Win- Stay
Duo/Group: Will/Should Win-- Sugarland

I thought you normally had to have a Grammy nomination to be allowed to perform, unless you are a LEGEND like Bruce Springstein, Madonna, or The Police, etc. It makes no sense to give a performance slot to miley and taylor when they are not even nominated for a single grammy.
Trisha or George Strait should have gotten that peformance slot as they are both multiple nominees.

I don't think that's the consensus in this thread (at least so far). Eh, whatever. It doesn't bother me because I highly doubt I'll be watching. I'll just catch Carrie's performance on the net (or if I get lucky and decide to channel surf and turn it to the channel right when she's performing).

Where they fall on the pop/country spectrum is debatable but this seems to be the largest country presence in recent memory with Carrie, Kenny, Sugarland, Alison and Taylor all performing.
