Some have an actual love for finding great material and a great art for interpreting it skillfully and/or originally. She doesn't/She doesn't. This is not a skillful/original interpretation of Patty Griffin's Up To The Mountain This is. And the only reason why she's singing that damn song in the first place. Well that's only your opinion, it doesn't make it a fact. Music is subjective after all. Some may find her interpretation "not skillfull/original," and some people may feel the same with KC's version. If you don't like it...move on.

I disagree. Some are, but some have an actual love for finding great material and a great art for interpreting it skillfully and/or originally. Simply being a "vocal artist" is not an automatic signal of being "manufactured." Vocal acts don't write or produce anything they sing, at least not usually. They're puppets. Vocals are the point of their career, not the music. I like listening to great singers in this genre but even I'll admit their catalogs are abysmal musically. The term MOR was invented for a reason. Bew, you're always discrediting somebody. Give it a rest.

You would make the claim that someone like, say, Sarah Vaughan, who could bring fresh life into many of her readings, or Michael Feinstein, who mines great songwriters' catalogues for lost classics and contributes a lot to rearranging and reinterpreting his material, both have abysmal catalogues simply because they don't have many songwriting and production credits? Or am I misunderstanding the group of artists to which you refer? Umm... lack of reading comprehension much? They're puppets because they simply sing things handed to them, the music is abysmal because it is vocal driven, and that's it. I love Sarah, but for the voice. Standards were equally mind numbing as current MOR music. Putting a cutesy tongue smiley after that question doesn't make it seem any less like you're resorting to ad hominem. "They're puppets because they simply sing things handed to them" implies all artists who go the traditional vocalist route have no control over their material, when in point of fact many artists who have taken this path (e.g., post-rock Linda Ronstadt, Michael Feinstein throughout his career, Ella Fitzgerald as she gained more clout within the industry) have a great deal of say in what they're recording. As to the "mind numbing" comment, I can't actually refute that opinion and you're entitled to hold it, but, in my opinion, that's a broad brush with which you're painting when a more intricate detailing is required.

I'm so glad for Susan. She's not my cup of tea, but she does have a great voice and I love her story. As for all the h.aters, no one is forcing you to listen to her. Does anyone else think she looks adorable in the album cover? Sort of like a little girl.

Watch pcd1987 come in with his "Like a Prayer" Madge wig and knoc u the f*ck down! I'VE already called SuBo the new Queen of Pop. Midge better pack it in, considering that this ho is roughly her age and looks 10x worse and doesn't even bother doing original songs or getting radio airplay and yet crushes her (and everyone else.)

Wow at the state of the music industry. A billion records one week, the next you're yesterday's news. Everything seems to be like a quick-fix, instant-pudding.
The music industry in a "drive-thru" state.
I'm happy for Susan Boyle, but wow wow wow... Shows the power of TV (how as soon as you're on TV you are suddenly skyrocketed to a god-like status, all of a sudden a "somebody"...) & equally how fickle many people out there can be.

Well the Elvis and the Beatles were introduced to audiences through television as well- it's really what you do with it- they both did okay and had long careers.

Surprised.
I knew she would get great sales, but I seriously did not expect that. Who else has had similar figures?

Susan Boyle beat Ashanti's first album debut week for a female artist in the US and Leona Lewis' first album debut week for a female artist in the UK!

I'd love to know how much this sold worldwide this past week. Between US and Britain alone, she already topped a million.

700,000! WOAH!
I guess she will be the huge seller of the holiday season. Good for her. I hate the style of music, it is just really boring to me, but it probably really connects with the older generations and they are the ones who will go out to actually buy an album.
