BILLBOARD CHART BEAT By Fred Bronson Edited by Barry A. Jeckell. July 28, 2005, 11:30 AM
TURNING 21: As speculated last week, this week Kelly Clarkson reasserts her dominance on Billboard's Adult Contemporary chart. After a one-week gap in which Michael Buble's "Home" (143/Reprise) moved to the head of the class, "Breakaway" (Walt Disney/Hollywood) is back on top, for a 21st week at No. 1.
That ties Clarkson's "Breakaway" with Celine Dion's "A New Day Has Come" as the longest-running AC chart-topper by a female artist. "Breakaway" and "A New Day Has Come" are also tied as the second-longest AC No. 1s of all time, behind the 28-week run of "Drift Away" by Uncle Kracker featuring Dobie Gray.

This has now regained its bullet. Hot #1 comeback! Songs on the AC chart lose and regain their bullets all the time. It's no big deal. In fact, as of the latest update, it's bulletless again.

She's lost her bullet and is now losing the most spins in the top 20 (-173), "Behind These Hazel Eyes" has also lost the bullet, but "Because of You" is taking off (+24!) Maybe the stations are finally dropping the 3 former Kelly Clarkson songs and going to pick up on the most fitting of her 4 singles for AC.

This song has spent several straight weeks at #3, more than other song in recent memory.

This song has spent several straight weeks at #3, more than other song in recent memory. I wonder if it's anywhere near the record for most weeks at #3, either consecutive or total.

On the US Music Survey this week, Mark Wallengren mentioned it's been at #3 for the last 13 weeks.

Looks like this is finally going recurrent this week. Oh man, Kelly won't get to have 4 songs on the AC chart at one time? ;)

This went recurrrent from #3? What are the recurrent requirements on AC, I thought it was top 10 or 15.

On the US Music Survey this week it stalls at #3 for the 15th week. Will it match the match her 17 week run at #1?

Did it spend at least 2 weeks at #3 on the way up? If so, then it does match it.

So much for that. Just out of curiosity, did it get any weeks at #2 on the way down? Because 17 wks at #1, 3 wks at #2, and 15 wks at #3 makes 35 weeks in the Top 3. That's a heck of a lot, and a few drop weeks at #2 would mean even more!

Do non-holiday songs not chart during the holiday season on AC or something??

Do non-holiday songs not chart during the holiday season on AC or something?? No, it's just that there are 2 weeks at the very end of the year where there are no R&R charts.

According to that chart run, Kelly has 17 total weeks at #3, 6 weeks at #2, and 18 total weeks at #3, making a total of 41 weeks in the Top 3. Very nice!

I'm going to miss "Breakaway" not being on the chart, but it's not like it won't be around, how long do you think it will remain in the top 10? I could see her staying in the top 10 for another year easily, I'm still surprised that Los Lonely Boys are keeping up after over a year!

In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't in the top 10 sans recurrent rules chart in January. Once a song leaves the R&R official chart, spins start decreasing more when the artist has another single (or in this case 3) on the chart. Los Lonely Boys are still up there because that is their only single. But even they won't make a year as a recurrent in the top 10. They are almost out of it right now...

After 59 weeks it falls off the US Music Survey chart this week.
