All that said, I'm glad this guy found Scooter and a label and that they're giving him the chance to be authentic to who he is and not put on some butch act. They just rolled it out in possibly the worst way imaginable.

I haven't followed his career at all, but can someone explain the launch promo and what happened? All I know is that they didn't reveal what his face looked like for awhile? Haven't heard any of his music but I'm all here for a boy singing about boys with some divas so hopefully this is good. Yeah, they kept his identity a mystery for a few months before the big little reveal on Jimmy Fallon. I can't speak for getonthebus, but my issue with the promo and his image is that his gay image seems very forced and not authentic. The makeup, the glitter blowing, the girly clothes, etc. just did not feel like it was truly him; more like a grab for the headlines for an artist/song that flopped majorly. This is a big part of my problem. I'll try to break it down, but I'm short for time and it can get very in-the-weeds to describe: 1) This is an epic screw-the-pooch by Scooter Braun. They tried to pull a Sia/The Voice by keeping his identity a secret. They had different stand-ins in the video, and it was kind of a cute twist. (Super sleuth Kurt figured out who he was early, IIRC). But, it went on and on and on, PDs were getting pissed because they had no idea who they were marketing/pushing, etc. Sia had the bob as an identity, and a track record as a featured artist/songwriter. Fancy did not. The song was flopping even before the performance 2) When he was finally revealed, it was during a very out-and-proud and flamboyant performance on Jimmy Fallon that ended like this: Now, it's 2015 and that's not (or at least should not be) a problem. America needs more LGBT voices in music. But, Adam Lambert wore Swarovski studded shoulder pads and an entire bottle of eyeliner on the American Idol finale in 2009. Sam Smith is resoundingly popular and also is not conventionally attractive. Looking at Sam's journey out of the closet, this was excruciatingly close to making a parallel/mockery of LGBT and coming out in general. It was tone deaf and stupid. If they were trying to make a point about how it's the voice and talent that count, not the looks, then they're saying that his gayness is something to hide. Plus, the song was stalled on the charts anyway, which means they're message was transparently wrong. If they're saying "look he's not what you thought!" then it's turning gayness into a prop or a sideshow. It reeked of a promo idea by straight men to play off themes and experiences they didn't take two seconds to think about the actual subtext of their message, and who they were saying it to. Worst of all, it was for nothing, because Goodbye pretty much flopped. And I liked the song.

YAS at the look, especially the eyes. But no to the choir and the dancer... it should have been her in a single spotlight. Raw and emotional. If the choir had just sung chords behind her, it would have been 100x more powerful.

Bird Set Free was better, but I think the Alive performance was good enough that people will check it out on iTunes.
The eyes on her cheeks are slaying me though.

I think the first 2 singles are stellar. An artist doesn't have to change their sound in order for me to like them. Oh I still like the songs, and her, and I don't think anyone is making that argument. The fact is that she has a much more diverse catalog than 1000FoF and these two singles present, that hasn't been apparent since her comeback, and it would be awesome to see more diversity from her. Especially since this is an album of songs intended for a diverse group of artists.

She'll be opening for Maroon 5 on their NA tour next Fall, which is when we should expect her new album. She's also featured on Coldplay's new album (might just be a writing credit, I can't find solid info).
Safe to say, she's set up for a big moment in 2016 already.

I wish she would experiment with Producers a bit more at this point. Her and Kurstin/Shatkin have a "sound" that's fallen into a pattern and needs shook up. Strip a song down like Breathe Me, change the instrumentation to be more colorful, TRY A DIFFERENT TEMPO.
I think Adele was smart to pass on Alive and Bird Set Free. You can see that they're telling Adele's story, but it's Sia telling Adele's story. And what makes Adele's music so powerful and worthwhile is that it's her expression of her emotion. It's not a knock on Sia, so much as they were telling her story from an outside perspective, which just didn't work for Adele. Like Rick Rubin told her when he heard her early version of 25, "I don't believe you."

In terms of artistry I like to think of Kelly as the anti-Beyonce woo lord shots fired

For an artist who has lived and died on streaming boosts to get chart traction, this was a colossal mistake. It's not even daring in its minimalism; just boring.
She needs to BRING IT on the most controversial episode of SNL in years.

Yeah if you're looking for something like Joy or Explosions, you won't find anything like it on the regular edition. Scream It Out is relatively slower to others too, but it's still done as a stadium anthem. One thing I definitely would not say is that it's not cohesive. Sonically, this is definitely her most cohesive album by default since the previous ones (especially Halcyon and HD) found her jumping back and forth between EDM flavors and sparse ballads. By refining the former into a more Pop direction and doing beat driven midtempos instead of the latter definitely makes it hold well as a unit. I'm excited to hear the Deluxe tracks today. I think Halcyon and Lights tell a better "story" than this (Halcyon Days not so much). There are threads that you can come and go and connect sonically (bouncy pop songs, DJ Mustard-esque bangers, the choir-y backup vocals), but I haven't quite found what makes this tick yet. Giving it another listen now. The Intro into Aftertaste is going to be epic live, and I have faith she can translate these big anthems live. Halcyon was thick, and she slayed its songs live. Also Codes>>>

I like it on first listen. They've made terrible single decisions so far, though.
One thing that sticks out to me is that it lacks the cohesiveness and "voice" of her previous albums. There's some of her personality in there, but it's not apparent.

I think there's a reason for that though. Back then Internet was relatively new and record labels didn't pay much attention. I honestly think drluke's behavior is why it doesn't happen more often now. Everyone has to agree to be hush hush now and if they don they're cut. He was insanely unprofessional and really mean to Kelly and at the time RCA was still making her work with him. It's interesting to have learned that Kelly was the actual writer of MLWSWY that must of pissed Luke off like no other. He really thought he was the only reason she had any big time success. I agree with everything you say, except I don't think Kelly had anything to do with writing MLWSWY, but we did learn recently that Kelly wrote the bridge on Since U Been Gone, another Max and Luke song. If I remember right, she recently clocked an anonymous writer for getting a credit that should have been given to her, because the label "needed certain names" on a song to sell it to radio PDs. Most people took it as MLWSWY, specifically Claude Kelly, since radio was unsure about her after MD.

I could almost hear this chorus on an Eminem track tbh. I wouldn't complain if we got a remix with a guest verse from someone.

I like it, but I'm ready for a change of pace/poppier track from her right now.
Actually this is begging for a guest verse.

Another big ballad, and very Eye of the Needle
At this point I'm more interested in hearing some of the more pop songs on the album, though.

Bird Set Free is the other Adele co-write, or was at least written for Adele originally.

It's SO Sia, though. Thanks for ignoring me. :'( Forgive me sis! It looks like it's 1/29 in the US, and most likely globally. I'm sure we'll be getting more info in the Alive promo burst we're about to get.

It's January 29 :'( Just revealed on the Instagram account @siathisisacting
Cover is on there, too. I think that might be her under prosthetics, like she mentioned she was hoping to use to hide her face in her performances for the era.

Just realized the synth in the breakdown/chorus sounds like the synths in the post-chorus of Ghostbusters.

So she essentially doubled the 1-week and debut week sales records. She owns it forever now. We're all her subjects, this is her world. Treat us fairly, Queen!

Is there a damn release date yet or what? Seriously. Been pretty quiet on that front so far. I'm hoping the 12/18 date is real, because I don't want to wait until 2016. That may be more realistic though, since Alive probably won't peak until like, July.

Speaking of videos, can we talk about Kelly's part in Ben's video for Second Hand Heart? I think they literally sent someone to her house with a handheld camera and had her stand in front of one of her windows and sing along to the song while it played from her laptop. I am not even kidding, I think this may have legitimately happened. lol Her body double at the end when they "meet."
