billboard's verdict:
Linkin Park, Trey Songz Set For Big Bows on Billboard 200 September 15, 2010 - Retail
By Keith Caulfield
Next week on the Billboard 200 albums chart, not only will the very top of the chart welcome handsome debuts from both Link Park's "A Thousand Suns" and Trey Songz's "Passion, Pain & Pleasure," but there may also be up to six new entries in the top 10.
Industry prognosticators suggest that Linkin Park's fourth studio set, "A Thousand Suns," could sell as much as 250,000 to 260,000 by week's end on Sept. 19. However, Songz is nipping at Linkin's heels as his "Passion" album could be looking to move between 230,000 and 250,000.
If Linkin Park triumphs and opens at No. 1, it will be the band's fourth leader on the tally. The band previously reached the top with 2003's "Meteora," its 2004 "Collision Course" mash-ups set with Jay-Z and its last studio effort, 2007's "Minutes to Midnight." The latter blasted onto the chart with 623,000 in its first week.
As for Songz, his last album, "Ready" in 2009, debuted and peaked at No. 3 with his best sales week (131,000). The album, which is his highest charting set, has so far shifted 807,000 in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan. That sum is more than the combined sales of his two earlier albums -- 2005's "I Gotta Make It" (396,000) and 2007's "Trey Day" (346,000).
Songz's current single, "Bottoms Up" (featuring Nicki Minaj), climbs from No. 20 to No. 17 on the Billboard Hot 100. Meanwhile, Linkin Park's "The Catalyst" -- the first single from "Thousand Suns" -- peaked at No. 35 last month.
Other albums in the hunt for a top 10 debut next week include Jamey Johnson's "Guitar Song," Weezer's "Hurley," Brandon Flowers' "Flamingo" and Robert Plant's "Band of Joy."

Just to clarify, as we all know, the population that buys physical albums has been slowly dwinding for a decade
I would guess, although there are no numbers to support this guess, the population of music buyers that buys multiple copies of music of their favorite artist to support chart position is considerably less

Go Trey! Love his album, and loved Ready as well. PPP is the best male R&B effort I have heard this year (although I still have to copy Lyfe Jenning's new one and John Legend's new cd!)

I expected Robert Plant to do better than that because Raising Sand was a huge success (and a brilliant album)

Yes- appearing on almost every TV outlet in sight may not hurt- but it's not the be-all-and-end-all for a strong performance. On the other hand, we've seen some acts do lots of TV promo and it not have much effect on their sales.
Album sales have taken a hit in the last few years, so I expected Linkin Park to see a drop in opening sales. But that is a sizable drop, especially when you consider some acts actually have seen higher openings in recent times compared to their last release (i.e. Eminem)- but, they're probably the exception.

Ouch for Linkin Park. Can't say I'm surprised though. Exactly what I was predicting for Linkin Park to begin with. Especially with "The Catalyst" polarizing both fans and listeners alike, I wasn't expecting a figure even half that of "Minutes to Midnight". I think this will likely be their first album not to obtain a Platinum certification. Namaste, Lisping Hibiscus

But that is a sizable drop, especially when you consider some acts actually have seen higher openings in recent times compared to their last release (i.e. Eminem)- but, they're probably the exception. I think the era-to-era decline here is more self-inflicted as it is part of the overall downward sales trend. Linkin Park chose to pursue an experimental, less-commercial sound this time around, and on top of that chose to release a track as the lead single that sounds more like apocalyptic house music than it does a radio single, which is already plunging down its core formats barely a month after its release. In addition, "A Thousand Suns" is an intensely political album, and many mainstream listeners are burnt out on political fodder. That's why "21st Century Breakdown" crashed and burned on the heels of "American Idiot". That's why Rise Against, in spite of their massive success on Alternative radio this era, haven't conquered the Top 40. And that is why this album will lack the longevity of its three predecessors. Experiments sometimes have consequences, and I'm sure Linkin Park are already realizing this. Even so, they seem very satisfied evolving their sound and having a diminished radio presence in result. Is 40-45k a good figure for Brandon Flowers?

Is 40-45k a good figure for Brandon Flowers? Depends on how you look at it. When comparing to the 193,000 copies "Day & Age" sold in its opening week, that is a discouraging number. But when you take into consideration most solo efforts tend to falter commercially, and that "Crossfire" and the album itself haven't had nearly as much promotion as any Killers record has, then the figure actually looks respectable. Isn't it also a possible factor that the original fans of Linkin Park simply grew up and moved on? It's not like they were ever considered a "timeless" band, were they?

Isn't it also a possible factor that the original fans of Linkin Park simply grew up and moved on? It's not like they were ever considered a "timeless" band, were they? I think it's more a factor that their original fans were "expecting" them to duplicate the "Hybrid Theory" sound, and obviously the band's heart is in a different place...........thus there is a wide enthusiasm gap toward supporting them commercially this era. I don't think their original fans have grown up and moved on. I think it's more the band has grown up and moved on (even though they're in a lyrical rut). Namaste, Lisping Hibiscus

I'm surprised at Trey's numbers. I'm not. Trey has enjoyed an unprecedented amount of exposure as of late with "Say Aah" in particular. He could very well emerge as a top-tier Urban artist this era, and with that comes some commercial upward momentum. I actually won't be surprised if "Passion, Pain and Pleasure" ends up upsetting "A Thousand Suns" for the #1 spot, as he clearly has the momentum right now while Linkin Park don't. I think this can very well become his first Platinum album. Namaste, Lisping Hibiscus

YOUR HIGH HOLY DAYS WEAKEND CHART PREVIEW
Going into the weekend, Warner Bros.' Linkin Park is in the lead, but Atlantic's Trez Songz is right behind them. Looks like Top 10 debuts on tap for Mercury Nashville's Jamey Johnson, Epitaph's Weezer, Rounder's Robert Plant and Island/IDJ's Brandon Flowers. Meanwhile, Universal Republic's Florence + the Machine ride her show-stopping VMA performance into the Top 15. Not bad.
*Linkin Park (Warner Bros.) 250-260k *Trey Songz (Atlantic) 230-240k Eminem (Shady/Aftermath/Interscope) 75-80k * Jamey Johnson (Mercury Nashville) 60-65k * Weezer (Epitaph) 45-50k * Robert Plant (Rounder) 45-50k * Brandon Flowers (Island/IDJ) 40-45k Now 35 (Capitol/EMI) 40-45k Katy Perry (Capitol/EMI) 32-37k Sara Bareilles (Epic) 28-32k Justin Bieber (Island/IDJ) 25-28k Disturbed (Reprise) 25-28k Fantasia (J/RMG) 22-25k Florence + The Machine (Universal Republic) 20-23k Drake (Young Money/Cash Money/Universal Motown) 17-20k *Debuts (9/16p)

At least we see some changes this week - Trey exceeding expectations, Florence jumping into the top 15 thanks to the VMAs, two albums above 200K after last week's 90K #1. Sales are still pretty bad all-around, and it doesn't look like Bieber's VMA performance affected his sales much, although they have underestimated his #'s the past couple weeks.

Wow, Jamey Johnson's numbers are remarkably impressive.
With figures like those, in spite of a total absence of airplay, he'll certainly duplicate the cult success of "That Lonesome Song".
