www.hitsdailydouble.com/news/newsPage.cgi?news08224m01PARK AND SONGZ DUKE IT OUT Warner Bros. rap-rock veterans and Atlantic R&B Star Race To the Wire September 15, 2010 Now this is a little bit more like it. Next week’s chart will feature a two-horse race with Warner Bros. rap-rock Linkin Park’s much-praised, Rick Rubin-produced A Thousand Suns, in the early lead, sporting a projected total of 250-260k. That is none too shabby, though it’s sobering to realize that just three short years ago, Minutes to Midnight moved a total of 623k its first week of release in May ’07. That’s thanks to one-day sales reports from those retailers wearing their Gaga-approved meat suits in the middle of September. Right behind the Linkin Park guys is Atlantic R&B tout Trey Songz with Passion, Pain and Pleasure, his fourth album, on target for 220-230k, a substantial increase over his 2009 release, Ready, which moved 131k on its way to a total of 785k. Next up is the critically acclaimed Jamey Johnson double-CD on Mercury Nashville, The Guitar Song, which will do a very impressive 60-65k. Weezer’s indie debut for Epitaph, Hurley, appears to be in the 45-50k range, while Rounder’s Robert Plant album, Band of Joy, the follow-up to his Grammy-winning Raising Sand, the 2007 collaboration with Alison Krauss, looks to be 40-45k, the same as Island/IDJ’s Brandon Flowers solo debut, Flamingo. The market was down 7% vs. last week, down 28% vs. same week last year (Jay-Z debuted with 476k) and now down 13% year to date. Now, that’s unlucky.

Ouch for Linkin Park. Can't say I'm surprised though.

Yeah they cannot be happy with that number. I guess The Catalyst really failed to ignite the interest they needed. Great total for Trey Songz. Decent for a new indie album from Weezer.

I'm so excited for Trey! This era has been clouded with nothing but negative predictions and gloom. I'm glad radio is responding well to his music and that the fans are coming out to support him. 100k more than the last album! So happy for him, because I have been a fan from day 1. I'd love for him to edge Linkin Park out, because he's doing a bit of promo and a lot of signings this week. Great numbers!

Trey is proving what I always believe to be true. Promotion is overrated. The key is building a connection with your fans through intimate touring, Twitter/UStream, autograph signings, and having good relationships with radio at your core formats. It's a journey, but eventually, it will pay off. Two tours in one year (Jay-Z and his co-headlining tour with Monica) is better promotion than any 5 minute segment on American Idol. He'll be touring with Usher later this year as well.

Well, 250-60k is still pretty damn good for today's sales climate, they were never gonna sell as much as last time anyways.

Considering the difference in sales from May 07 til now and the fact that "The Catalyst" is no "What I've Done" at radio, the LP numbers aren't that bad. Great for Trey

Promotion is nothing if there is no connection to fans (Christina A) and having a strong radio presence is nothing without that same connection (Derulo, Flo-Rida, Jay Sean)....and that's really how it is now. This is the same reason why artists like Monica, Keyshia Cole and Fantasia benefit from their reality shows.

Linkin Park's numbers aren't that bad. I've seen a lot of people complain about their new music though so I guess I just sort of expected it to be lower than their last go-round. It's still a solid number though.

I don't think anyone expected them to sell what they did with the last cd. I guess 250kish isn't bad, but I don't think they will be heaving themselves in victory throes over it. I thought they would be able to flirt closer to 300-350K with their debut history/fanbase/tour base.
I also think promo depends on the artist. An intimate connection to fans through touring and core format attention can be very, very important. Promo cannot be discounted completely though. Remember when every single time Gaga performed during that first real year of breaking out her album sales would explode afterward? Connecting in a major live performance can still help you connect with your fans.

Ke$ha's performances also affected her album sales earlier this year.

Remember when every single time Gaga performed during that first real year of breaking out her album sales would explode afterward? Connecting in a major live performance can still help you connect with your fans. Definitely. Promotion and good performances have played key roles in the launches of many careers. I don't think promotion is useless, but I think a lot of people feel promotion is everything. Not every artist is able to land the same opportunities or platforms to perform when it comes time to promote. I've seen so many artists perform at major award shows, every daytime/late night talk show, and still flop when the numbers come in. In Trey's case, I think he's proving that if you can't necessarily land performance gigs at all of the major shows, then the best thing to do is reach your fans directly. It's a strategy an artist like Ciara could really benefit from. Her team still relies on no promotion until 1-2 weeks prior to the album release and expects to see huge numbers just because she's on every major show.

For a 25-track album with no hit single, Jamey Johnson's projection is most impressive. What an unbelievable album, too. :worship:

It's a matter of question now could he sell beyond "GOLD". It's up in the air. The feedback I've seen from others about the album is 50/50.

I just bought LP album off Itunes. I can see why some of the fans are disappointed coming off the last album. This album does have a couple good/hit songs. 250-260k is not bad. Yeah, it's not 600k but still good.

I don't know how you can put out "The Catalyst" as your lead single and expect something else. I could only hope this album would flop so badly and they'd go on studio to produce more material before going on a long tour schedule. But I guess they have money enough not to care. =\

I should've been more specific, but I think the people discussing it understood what I meant. LOL.
