I think the important thing here is that Rihanna is on track to replace herself as number one on both the BB Hot 100 and Airplay.

Janet's albums should have higher certs, but not as high as 9m and 10m for Rhythm Nation and janet. (I'm aware of the figures from that press release, but the numbers just don't add up). Realize that Design of a Decade took a good portion of catalog sales for those albums. Control probably should be upped to 7 million, and Rhythm Nation should be upped to 7m (8m absolute tops, but probably not)- realize that Design of a Decade took a good bulk of catalog sales from it and Control. The janet. obviously should be 7 platinum, and very possibly 8 platinum- but in no way 10 platinum. And part of the reason for that is that Virgin did not make its albums available at record clubs for cheap prices- i.e. they were not discounted majorly or part of any"Buy-such-and-such, get such-and-such free selections). So, if the Virgin albums were available at record clubs (I don't think it was at Columbia at all), it was at regular price
But, anyway- this is a Hot 100 thread. And speaking of a Jackson... anyone surprised by "Hold My Hand's" showing? We'll see how the album fares.

That alone brings janet. to 8 million sold so janet. should be at LEAST 9x platinum (probably diamond since albums from the early 90's were overshipped anyway) Even with these figures, Janet should in no way be considered a "singles" artist.

Just noticed, by this date - it'll be the Christmas chart then? "Firework" does feel quite festive, if you think about it.

It's amazing how much airplay R&B songs can get R&B airplay peaked in 2004/2005. Nowadays R&B songs get lesser and lesser play due to Pop radio snubbing most of them. Man I hope next year Pop radio starts to play R&B songs again, enough of the club fist pumping stuff! "Nothin' on You" and "Just the Way You Are" are like the only 2 songs of the year to have any kind of mainstream success.

I agree there. Rihanna ain't a huge seller, but she's nothing to dismiss either. Every since she blew up, all her albums have gone at least platinum, and in this day and age, that's not a 'shame' or anything close to that word.

How many times is this same conversation going to be mulled over? it's off-topic, this is the HOT 100. not the Billboard 200, if you want to discuss album sales please move over there. I do not appreciate coming to this thread and seeing this same argument over and over.

Thats the problem here 3 of her #1s are from Good Girl Gone Bad, which sold close to 3 million, that's nothing to be ashamed of, I'd definitely say it's actually a good amount of sales. In the other eras, she had a #1, and that was pretty much it. so, she sold over a million with one #1 and a couple of top 10s... so, I don't think it's that big of a deal that she doesn't sell crazy amounts of copies, she sells well. Look at this era for an instance, she has had two #1s and is close to selling 500k, no doubt this is going to cross the million mark.

Not dismissing them as not her #1, just saying. Those #1's helped Eminem and TI more. Rihanna is selling decently though. It's a tired discussion. GGGB is probably the most she's going sell, so anything close to that number is good enough

I found this little nugget in a profile EW did of LA Reid. Thought it'd be of interest in people here:
1:30 pm Strategy confab with executives regarding Rihanna's single ''Only Girl (In the World)'' and the plan to temporarily lower its cost on iTunes to help drive it to No. 1 on the Hot 100 chart — a spot that her ''What's My Name?'' currently holds. Reid's stance is firm: ''These customers don't buy songs because they're less money, they buy because they want the song, because they f---ing love it, and that's the only thing that's gonna sell it.''

I see bunch of stand trying to justify rihanna's not so good album's sales. The fact is she is not a good album seller. She's more of a singles seller. We've had this discussions for so long, now let's move on.
And I don't agree with LA Reid and he knows well that lower price does make a change. We know how close her and Pink were for #1. I really can't stand that man.

How come Rihanna sells bucketloads of albums in the UK if 'she's not a good album seller'?
GGGB 5xP, Rated R 2xP, Loud already over platinum.. She's a way better album seller than Britney Spears has ever been.
It's not about Rihanna, it's more about the taste of people in the US in general.

She's a way better album seller than Britney Spears has ever been. Queen Britney 80 million sold you missed the part where he said "in the UK" people focus so much on the US like it's the only important country when other countries are just as important especially with people like rihanna and pink where there are greater are likely to be greater than the people who may be outselling them in the states they get double or even triple the success they get in the US from other countries and that will cause them to outsell alot of their peers' totals anyway

^Spears' debut was still selling tons of copies at that time, so the label more than likely shipped that many units. Plus, it probably had decent record club sales, as it was not a Virgin album release.

I don't think anyone in the industry is looking at Rihanna and thinking she's a bad investment right now. She sells reasonably well on albums and does phenomenally well on the singles chart.
You want to see disparity on singles vs. albums, look at Flo Rida or Taio Cruz.
Not every artist performs the same way, and there's nothing really that unusual about Rihanna's performance.

They wanted to send the song to #1. Says so right there. Clearly Reid was overruled on that decision. Turned out it worked, although it may have sold just as well without the discount.
