I love Katy, I love "Firework", but I also love the high turnover rate at No. 1 ;)
she clearly has No. 1 on lock for a second week, but what has the best chance of toppling her in the coming weeks? "What's My Name"? "Grenade"? any major new singles on the horizon besides GaGa + Britney?

The only other song that has a chance right now is Whats My Name, but if Katy's airplay keeps increasing the way it is even that song more than likely wont be able to cover the sales gap.

R&B airplay peaked in 2004/2005. Nowadays R&B songs get lesser and lesser play due to Pop radio snubbing most of them. Man I hope next year Pop radio starts to play R&B songs again, enough of the club fist pumping stuff! "Nothin' on You" and "Just the Way You Are" are like the only 2 songs of the year to have any kind of mainstream success. i doubt it. id say 2012 the current trend for pop music will start changing, either having more country (which i think has the highest possibility), more rock, or more r&b. i think 2011 will be more dance/techno based, as well as early 2012. then i think the change will come

Considering it's been 10 years since Madonna's had a top ten airplay hit or a #1 single I don't really think she's been considered that powerful a chart force for quite some time.

While she's just 22, something tells me RiRi won't go down as one of the most revered, important and greatest artists of all time, though, like Madonna- just a hunch. :)
But, great to see someone enjoying consistent radio success. I'm sure she's gonna rack up even more hits- she's got plenty of years of youth left, which is most appealing to U.S. radio these days.

Madonna who? QUEEN OF POP :'( Mariah is the queen of airplay. Just because she has a Holiday song that's big every year? You do know there are 11 months aside from December right? It's amazing how Katy has been having a flawless era so far. I hope she follows Firework with E.T., as I find that Peacock song stupid and it might turn radio off.

Mariah is the queen of airplay. Just because she has a Holiday song that's big every year? You do know there are 11 months aside from December right? No, its because she has the most total weeks at #1 on the airplay chart, five songs with 10+ weeks, and the highest weekly audience impressions. :'(

Mariah is the queen of airplay. still living in 2005 i see Okay, Mariah WAS the queen of airplay. Today, Rihanna is the queen of airplay. But let's see, can Rihanna be as huge as Mariah in term of airplay? Rihanna has occupied top 2 on airplay and soon she will replace herself on #1 airplay, just like Mariah did. But how about reaching 200 AI, topping airplay charts more than 10 weeks, still making airplay hits after 20 years of her career (Obsessed went top 10) like Mariah did? Time will tell .

Is it even possible to achieve 200 mil audience impressions anymore since they took so many stations off the panels?

Is it even possible to achieve 200 mil audience impressions anymore since they took so many stations off the panels? no it isn't. Thanks. So basically, the comment about Rihanna not reaching 200 mil AI is irrelevant just like album sales since albums don't sell nearly what they use to.

How many stations now comprise Hot 100 Airplay? Or was it Mediabase you're talking about removing stations?
"Day" in the sun for Madge, 2m? Much more than that. :) And, more importantly, the legacy (not talking about charts) lives on.
RE the highest weekly audience- yes, that is true, but I'd put the asterisk of December 1998-present on it, as that's when all formats became part of the Hot 100 Airplay panel. However, it's very possible that even if one combined a track's audience total from all of its formats pre-December 1998, "We Belong Together" still would have the highest tally. Simply because more stations were monitored from 1998-on- before that, a number still were factored into the Hot 100 via radio playlist information (after December 1998, it was just a handful of small-market stations whose information was contributed in that form).
