Irrelevant? It's like trying to say that adjusted-for-inflation box office doesn't matter, when it certainly does. :) Like I said, though, it's very possible WBT would have the highest tally, anyhow, in the BDS era, if all tracks had their all-formats audience totals combined.

SONG OF THE DECADE :'(

I'm not knocking that WBT would indeed be the highest no matter what stations were in the panal when. But I just don't see the point in bringing that up when no other song in the immediate future can even hope to come close to that.

Less stations nowdays? I don't think so.
And let's not just mention WBT but SIO as well - the second song ever to surpass 200 mil (mediabase). And the most importing thing - WBT was actually selling her album. Amen.

WBT remains the only track to top 200m BDS, correct? peak of 212m and change. I believe "Irreplaceable" came closest (196.1m or so).

It was 223m, not 212m. On mediabase it was 255, i think. I'm not sure if SIO reached 200m on BDS or mediabase. Irreplaceable was around 208m on medibase. The last song with huge AI was No One, it had around 190m on mediabase.

I also thought it was 223m BDS, but Ask Billboard had posted this not too long ago (and hasn't amended it):
PERRY POWER
Hi Gary,
With Katy Perry's "California Gurls," featuring Snoop Dogg, blanketing radio (and leading the Billboard Hot 100 for a third week), I was wondering what song has totaled the greatest amount of airplay in a given week? Is it "We Belong Together" by Mariah Carey?
Thanks,
Christian Medrano Willmar, Minnesota
Hi Christian,
Billboard director of charts and Hot 100 chart manager Silvio Pietroluongo notes in this week's print issue that, with 122.5 million audience impressions, Perry's song, the Hot 100's Greatest Gainer/Airplay award-winner this week, passes Chingy's "One Call Away" (121.6 million, 2004) for highest audience total for a Capitol Records title since the Hot 100 radio panel was expanded to include all formats in December 1998.
As "California Gurls" is not No. 1, however, on Radio Songs - it bullets at No. 3, trailing Usher's "OMG" (161.9 million) and B.o.B's "Airplanes" (123 million) - it's far from the chart record.
Here are the top 10 songs with the highest radio audiences, according to Nielsen BDS (listed by each title's peak audience week). You correctly guessed the top song on the list:
Peak Audience, Title, Artist, Peak Date 212.1 million, "We Belong Together," Mariah Carey, July 9, 2005 196.3 million, "Irreplaceable," Beyonce, Jan. 20, 2007 192.5 million, "No One," Alicia Keys, Dec. 22, 2007 189.6 million, "Let Me Love You," Mario, Feb. 5, 2005 175.6 million, "Gold Digger," Kanye West featuring Jamie Foxx, Oct. 22, 2005 172.8 million, "Yeah!," Usher featuring Lil Jon & Ludacris, April 17, 2004 172.3 million, "My Boo," Usher and Alicia Keys, Nov. 20, 2004 171.4 million, "Be Without You," Mary J. Blige, April 1, 2006 170.2 million, "In Da Club," 50 Cent, March 29, 2003 167.7 million, "Dilemma," Nelly featuring Kelly Rowland, Sept. 7, 2002
It's not a coincidence that the songs above all scored success at pop and R&B/hip-hop radio. As the two formats have traditionally enjoyed strong Arbitron ratings in large markets, tracks that cross over between them have a greater chance at registering the highest overall audience totals on the Radio Songs survey.

^ That list seems flawed. There's no way that 'Shake It Off' didn't make that list with 200+m on Mediabase. The difference between BDS and Mediabase has never been that large.

"Shake it Off" peaked at around 167 million BDS- that much I do recall being reported.

While she's just 22, something tells me RiRi won't go down as one of the most revered, important and greatest artists of all time, though, like Madonna- just a hunch. :) But, great to see someone enjoying consistent radio success. I'm sure she's gonna rack up even more hits- she's got plenty of years of youth left, which is most appealing to U.S. radio these days. Well, Madonna broke down a lot of barriers and pushed the envelope. She basically killed anyone elses chances of doing the same thing. I mean, what boundaries can today's acts push? Pretty much all the barrier were broken down by other artists. Unless Rihanna tries to take on something like bestiality, its not gonna happen. However, she will still be remembered and she still had a shot at breaking some records. I don't think anyone will take Madonnas crown though.

I recall in USA Today, when it used to post the airplay top 10, that "Shake it Off" was at 167m or so- even accounting for a day or so difference in which the info was reported, to go from that to 145.5m?

^That just shows that unreleased MJ material won't necessarily be a smash hit. After his passing, the classic material understandably saw huge gains. But, we saw how "This is It" didn't exactly burn up the charts.
