I agree, Chartfreak. I asked at work yesterday if anyone saw the Madonna/Gaga thing in the news or online and they said, no. I stay glued to CNN and there is no mention of it either.

I'm saying it seems so intense to us because we are online and following it. I'm in an office building now and I bet if i asked 100 people, they wouldnt even know what I was talking about. Would they be the kind of people who'd even buy a Madonna record though? Because I bet you those who would know about this, and they're the ones who matter.

It's like anything- people who are following it or whatever, it will feel "intense" to them. Others may hear a passing mention of it, and not pay all that much attention to it.
RE COADF- it was released in the fourth quarter, but one week ahead of the start of the holiday shopping season. It didn't have the longest run in the top 40 for her albums (10 weeks), but it managed to spend 37 total weeks on the Billboard 200. The Confessions Tour that commenced in May 2006 helped it hang around, despite the lack of substantial hits following "hung Up."

What do you expect she has a strong (but limited) fanbase in the USA too. After the first week or two she faded away quick. Look what happened to her 2nd single, she didn't even have a 3rd single here or did she? Either way they went no where..... I wouldn't quite say that is faded away quickly...it has sold over 1.7 million in the U.S.A. I heard Carrie Underwood has a new album coming out soon. Carrie's first album was released the same week as COADF. Any chance she'll be releasing the same week as M, or is Carrie's album still further out? According to the label release schedule, Madonna is scheduled for sometime in March and Carrie has a tentative release date of May 1st. This can always change.

I'd imagine anyone who has watched ABC at any given point in the last few days is aware.

The part of the interview which Madonna refers to 'Born This Way' as "reductive", then smirks and sips tea has already been shown on CNN and Fox News yesterday. That is how I got wind of the ABC interview. In addition, the story has already made many online news sources, including the front page of Yahoo and MSN.

I think a fairly decent number of younger women and gay men are aware of Madonna's comments in the interview because it's all over the entertainment blogs, and they just so happen to comprise the core demographic of CHR/Pop radio.

the tea-sipping "look it up" smirk will go down in history as an iconic Madonna moment. It's a classic already.

M will be on stage twice tomorrow night at the Globes....for presenting an award for FL film and hopefully and deservedly winning for Masterpiece. Can't wait to hear her speech. She's going to wow us in looks and words.

A Britney Spears collabo is a rumor that has not been corroborated anywhere.

You guys are worried about Carrie Underwood?
I'm expecting Mariah to announce that her new album is coming out in March!

^I guess they'd be worried in terms of first-week sales topping Madonna. At this point, I'd expect Underwood's album to sell more than Madge's in a first-week contest. But, as said, Underwood's isn't expected until post-March. I have no doubts that Interscope wants to secure a No. 1 debut- with decently splashy number, too.

There really hasn't been much talk about Mariah even being in the studio, so I doubt they are planning to put out a lead single soon enough to be able to release in March. A fall album release is looking more likely at this point.

I watched the 20/20 interview and the "reductive" comment was taken WAY out of context. The previews made it sound rude to get people to watch, but the interview played out much differently. She praised Gaga.....then the interview asked if the comparisons were annoying and that's when she said "it feels reductive", which I guess means the controversy is taking away from the songs themselves.

A Britney Spears collabo is a rumor that has not been corroborated anywhere. Good. Let's hope it's just that: a rumor. Madge doesn't need that on her album.

Can't wait to see her tomorrow at the Globes! Really hoping she wins, it would be a great way to start off the new era if all of these fab interviews weren't enough and of course the Superbowl. "Masterpiece" is much deserving of the award.

Madonna Breaks Silence on Gaga ‘Born This Way’ Controversy; ’20/20′ Exclusive TonightBy Alice Gomstyn @alicegomstyn Follow on Twitter Jan 13, 2012 6:30amNearly a year after Lady Gaga released her hit single “Born This Way,” Madonna is finally offering her take on the song … and it’s not exactly enthusiastic. Gaga has long expressed her admiration for Madonna, calling the pop icon an inspiration. Comparisons between the two divas have been inevitable, from their dance-hall beats to their risque musical treatment of sex and religion. The two even teamed up for a “catfight” skit on “Saturday Night Live” in 2010. But last February’s release of “Born This Way” had many questioning whether the Mama Monster had gone too far in emulating her idol. The song, critics charged, was stunningly similar to Madonna’s 1989 chart-topper, “Express Yourself.” Gaga would go on to say that she got an e-mail from Madonna’s “people” saying they supported the song, but a representative for Madonna later said she was unaware of any such e-mail. When ABC News asked viewers to contribute questions for Cynthia McFadden’s interview with Madonna, the most popular request by far was that McFadden find out how the singer feels about Gaga. McFadden did, starting with the question of whether Madonna felt Gaga was “copying” her. The pop singer’s response, at first, was complimentary. She called Gaga “a very talented artist” and said she admired her songwriting. But she owned up to the connection between Gaga’s music and her own. “I certainly think she references me a lot in her work. And sometimes I think it’s amusing and flattering and well done,” she said. Madonna said sometimes Gaga’s work also appears to be a “statement about taking something that was in the Zeitgeist, you know, 20 years ago and turning it inside out and reinterpreting it.” “There’s a lot of ways to look at it. I can’t really be annoyed by it …because, obviously, I’ve influenced her.” But the Material Girl became coy when the conversation turned to “Born This Way.” “When I heard it on the radio …I said that sounds very familiar,” Madonna said. Asked if that felt annoying, Madonna responded, “It felt reductive.” moved by weight or force in a certain direction or into a certain position as to whether that was a good or bad thing, Madonna told Cynthia McFadden to “look it up” — we did; the term means “minimal” or “crude” — before smiling slyly and taking a sip from her tea cup. See more about what Madonna had to say on Gaga, including whether she’d do a duet, tonight on “20/20″ at 10 p.m. ET. abcnews.go.com/blogs/entertainment/2012/01/madonna-breaks-silence-on-gaga-born-this-way-controversy-2020-exclusive-tonight/Good read! Wonder if Marilyn Monroe would feel Modonna's look was reductive or Katy Perry would feel Give Me All Your Luvin could've been an album track on Teenage Dream? and for those who don't know, there is more than one meaning for the word reductive... reductive: tending to present a subject or problem in a simplified form, esp. one viewed as crude This is the meaning she meant most likely. Born This Way takes the whole GAY/TRANSGENDER issue and presents it in a simplified way.

the tea-sipping "look it up" smirk will go down in history as an iconic Madonna moment. It's a classic already. I know. People are going to start using bigger words to describe anything and then say "look it up" copying Madonna's smirk...and probably with an imaginary teacup. I can't wait...LOL

Why does "pres sed" change to "moved by weight or force in a certain direction or into a certain position" ? Lol it did that in the interview, the couple other times I noticed that I thought people were just being funny.

Perhaps you just took it the wrong way. I knew she was being shady but wasn't going to completely be rude. She answered the question in a clever manner to let people know that she admires Gaga's talent but wasn't too fond of her re working of express yourself-eh, I'm not surprised one bit about that.

We should talk with Marilyn Monroe, Betty Hutton and the staples singers and see how they feel about their work being simplified and reduced by the likes of Madonna who put out sex books with random guys fondling her.

Lol it did that in the interview, the couple other times I noticed that I thought people were just being funny. The word was changed to that because it was being thrown around and used too much.

Adonis Euliss, it's alright if you're not a card-carrying member of the Madonna Fan Club. :)
Madonna didn't "simplify" or "reduce" others' work. it's very clear that, for instance, the "Material Girl" video was an homage to Monroe's classic movie scene- and that video became as iconic (if not more) than the original. And when she does a Vanity Fair photo shoot titled "Homage to Norma Jean..."- well, fairly obvious what that's about. On Like a Prayer, she directly said that two songs were her tribute to Sly & the Family Stone, while another was a tribute to Simon & Garfunkel. She's discussed art/paintings that have inspired particular things in her videos. (The "Hollywood" video being a exception- but that clip and track are hardly career highlights of hers).
I think the issue with something like "Born This Way" is the "denial"- it would be less of an issue if the influence was discussed/acknowledged for the track more than it was. Of course, Stefani in general has talked about how highly she thinks of Madonna and how much she loves her work and has been influenced by it.

It sounds like sour grapes of the less musically inclined MDNA (but born this way). Gaga had already said more than once that Madonna was a huge influence on her. I think that's too much recognition....Especially since gaga has far and away more involvement in her work than Madonna has ever had in hers. Madonna is all marketing and sexual innuendo. Gaga is raw talent. I like Madonna but it made me think girl you don't even have as much talent but you are trying to throw shade at the girls who could actually sing and play musical instruments...

Madonna's collaborators have confirmed her high level of involvement, not to mention her handwritten lyrics and melodies that have been found and put up for auction over the years. Madonna can sing and play instruments: This is all so rich coming from a Janet stan - a woman who had a secret husband ghost writing her music for a decade, that didn't have a single writing credit on her last album, and whose vocal range is whisper to nasally whine.

In an interview with the Mirror, asked about the No1 in her Âcurrent music collection, Madonna replied Adele. "I love Adele," said Madonna. "I think she's amazing and has an Âincredible voice. She impresses me most out of the new artists today." Read more: drownedmadonna.com/#ixzz1jUjjodVf
