Will overall album sales reach new lows, is the more important thing, I think. This past week, it was 5.45m, still 600K ahead of the SoundScan-era low.

I am DEAD at the top numbers-you guys pegged it right when you said that Nicki or someone else should do some sort of insane promo and get that #1. They wouldn't even have to sell that much more.

The good news is, we have some new releases this week. The bad news is, it's gonna be another record-setting week as the #1 album may not even top 40k. Here's how it looks headed into the weekend (read 'em and weep): *Cake (Upbeat/ILG) 37-42k *Cage the Elephant (Jive/RED) 34-37k Taylor Swift (Big Machine) 32-35k Bruno Mars (New Elektra) 29-32k Nicki Minaj (Young Money/Cash Money/Universal Motown) 29-32k Country Strong (Sony Music Nashville) 27-30k Rihanna (Def Jam/IDJ) 27-30k Kanye West (Roc-a-Fella/IDJ) 25-28k *Steel Magnolia (Big Machine) 24-27k The Black Keys (Nonesuch) 22-25k Katy Perry (Capitol/EMI) 21-24k *LeCrae (Reach) 20-23k Jason Aldean (Broken Bow) 18-21k Mumford & Sons (Glassnote) 18-21k Eminem (Shady/Aftermath/Interscope) 18-21k *Debuts (1/13p) i think the premire of the back to december video will put taylor back in the running for number one

Wow everyone is so close to each other. Sorry to sound harsh, but we need a release from someone actually relevant.

Horrific sales... those should be sales figures for the UK or a great week for Australia, not for the US.

I hope Cake sells 40K. Glad to see Bruno Mars continue to sell but he needs like 2 or 3 more hit singles and probably a re-release to get 1 million sales.

Hoping Recovery can stay in the Top 15.
Yeah, I don't think Speak Now is catching Recovery at this rate.

Hoping Recovery can stay in the Top 15. Yeah, I don't think Speak Now is catching Recovery at this rate. It still could. A big hit from Speak Now would easily put it over Recovery. The revival it will get from next year's Grammys, as far away as they might be, will also help.

Hoping Recovery can stay in the Top 15. Yeah, I don't think Speak Now is catching Recovery at this rate. It's only 300K behind it, and it'll keep selling consistently through the year. Just wait till "Sparks Fly" and "The Story of Us" are released.

Again, though- let's look at the bigger picture. The No. 1 tally will be pretty embarrassing, but if overall album sales reach a new low, then that's something really worrisome. Not that there haven't been enough worrisome commercial trends in the music biz as it is, of course.

Hoping Recovery can stay in the Top 15. Yeah, I don't think Speak Now is catching Recovery at this rate. It ultimately will. Taylor Swift albums sell forever. Eminem albums have less of a shelf life

Lol, Cake at #1 with 40k? Although that's extremely low, that'll be their first ever #1.

I think it's awesome that such a dark horse artist has the shot at #1. I hope it stays that way. :) They have a loyal enough fan base, though.

Major artists usually wait to release new albums until October/November to get maximum holiday sales, right? So old albums have to keep up sales levels in slow months like January or February which will lead to worse albums sales every year.

Wow, eminem dropped like a rock =(
But it is his labels fault for not releasing another single. They should be sending out a new single to ready in a week or two, and getting a video ready to premiere right after the Grammys. He should perform Not Afraid and then a snippet of the new single. DUH!!!

Hmm, when's the first big album of the year? The only one on my mind is Brit.

Just wait till "Sparks Fly" and "The Story of Us" are released. It's important not to forget, however, that Eminem has a remaining advantage himself.........the Grammy hype. Even if he doesn't win in some key categories, he'll certainly get a boost from this year's awards show. Plus, if he releases, "Talkin' 2 Myself", I think he'll quite likely rebound from the radio lull that "No Love" predictably gave him. Namaste, Lisping Hibiscus
