TAKING THE CAKE Sparse Slate of New Releases Means No Change at the Top
January 12, 2011
Hey, didn’t anybody tell the record business that the new year started?
This week’s chart sported the lowest-ever total by a chart-topper with Taylor Swift’s total of 52k, but the worst could still be coming.
According to those music retailers and abacus-counters who have returned for 2011, veteran Alternative band Cake’s new Upbeat/ILG album, Showroom of Compassion, the Sacramento rockers’ first studio release since 2004’s Pressure Chief, will be the week’s biggest debut, with sales between 35-40k which, given the state of the chart, should be a lock for the Top 10.
Jive/RED’s Cage the Elephant, the Bowling Green, Kentucky, rock band who dominated Alternative and Rock radio since the release of their 2008 self-titled debut, return with their sophomore effort, Thank You, Happy Birthday, already preceded by the single, “Shake Me Down,” which went Top 20 at Mainstream Rock, #3 at Alternative and #6 at Rock. Look for it to do between 30-35k, which should also be good enough to crack the Top 10.
Scott Borchetta’s Nashville-based Big Machine comes with Steel Magnolia, the self-titled debut from the country duo of Meghan Linsey and Joshua Scott Jones, who won the TV talent show Can You Duet. The album is on target for between 24-27k in first-week sales.
Hitting stores Next week are Capitol/EMI’s The Decemberists, Custard/Atlantic’s James Blunt, Epic’s The Script and Razor & Tie’s Kidz Bop Kids. Don’t expect a giant release until March, when Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter IV hits, along with new albums scheduled from Britney Spears and Kanye West/Jay-Z.
The market was down 24% vs. last week, down 8% vs. same week last year and down 8% year to date. You may now return to removing yourself from Sarah Palin’s crosshairs.

Another month and a half of depressing sales. Will the #1 record be broken each week?

Maybe Britney Will Raise The Numbers In March Or Brad Paisley, Since he's The Only Big Super Star who didn't Release a Album In 2010, Cause from what i can tell their's no other Big Dog Daddy's who can sale real Big in 2011 in country, since all the major Artist put out albums in 2010 from Country Music.

Boring week. I can't actually believe that NO ONE is taking advantage of this horrible sales to get a #1 (hi over there Rihanna, this may be your best shot for a #1 album with Loud).

Not completely true, Ke$ha (just to name one act) had a good run during last January. It's just that there's not a big release soon and the current ones aren't being promoted. However, it is true that sales usually drop during the month.

It would be a perfect time for RCA to drop Cannibal's price to $5 for a few weeks to increase sales. Does anyone know how much Animal was when it debuted at #1 last January? I remember I pre-ordered but forgot the cost.

I hope Rihanna can score her first ever #1 album. I don't mind if Nicki hits #1 too.

Rihanna would need a new hit to be #1...What's My Name is too old for that. It's doing well on radio but doesn't sell the album like it did in December.

I think Taylor releasing her new music video today will give her enough buzz to stay nr1 this week.

The good news is, we have some new releases this week. The bad news is, it's gonna be another record-setting week as the #1 album may not even top 40k. Here's how it looks headed into the weekend (read 'em and weep):
*Cake (Upbeat/ILG) 37-42k *Cage the Elephant (Jive/RED) 34-37k Taylor Swift (Big Machine) 32-35k Bruno Mars (New Elektra) 29-32k Nicki Minaj (Young Money/Cash Money/Universal Motown) 29-32k Country Strong (Sony Music Nashville) 27-30k Rihanna (Def Jam/IDJ) 27-30k Kanye West (Roc-a-Fella/IDJ) 25-28k *Steel Magnolia (Big Machine) 24-27k The Black Keys (Nonesuch) 22-25k Katy Perry (Capitol/EMI) 21-24k *LeCrae (Reach) 20-23k Jason Aldean (Broken Bow) 18-21k Mumford & Sons (Glassnote) 18-21k Eminem (Shady/Aftermath/Interscope) 18-21k *Debuts (1/13p)
