CHART GOES INTO THE RED NEXT WEEK Nashville Christian Hard Rock Band Has Best Chance for #1 Bow, The Civil Wars Debut
February 2, 2011
Do you know who Red is?
The Grammy-nominated Nashville Christian hard rock band may well have the #1 album in the U.S. next week, based on one-day retailers who haven’t closed up shop to go party with Charlie Sheen. Until We Have Faces, which is wishful thinking, is slated to sell between 45-50k, for Sony’s RED Ink distribution. That’s not only the biggest debut, it will go head to head with Young Money/Cash Money/Universal Motown holdover Nicki Minaj for the top spot.
Red, sometimes stylized as RED or R3D, has had two previous albums, 2006’s End of Silence and 2009’s Innocence & Instincts, both albums earning Grammy noms for Best Rock Gospel Album.
Sony Music Latin’s Ricky Martin album is the next highest debut, with a projected first-week total of 24-27k, followed by Island/IDJ’s posthumous Bob Marley live album of his last-ever performance, Bob Marley & The Wailers—Live Forever, recorded in Pittsburgh at the Stanley Theatre, Sept. 23, 1980, and never officially released in the U.S. until now.
Also keep your eyes peeled for indie country group The Civil Wars, a collaboration between Reunion solo act Joy Williams and John Paul White on the sensibility music label. Their new album, Barton Hollow, which has been #1 on iTunes, has a good shot at a Top 20 debut next week, thanks to CMT’s Jay Frank, who took a flyer on the album by putting it into play.
The market was up 1% vs. last week, down 18% vs. same week last year and now down 13% year to date. How happy is Citigroup to be in the record business?

That "Faceless" is a nice track by Red. Hope Nicki Minaj get's #1 though.

Red should get #1. They deserve it more than Nicki.

I hope Nicki gets the #1. Me too. This may be her last shot at getting the number 1, so I wouldn't be opposed to her label helping out...if you know what I mean.

I hope Nicki gets the #1. I hope so too. She's had surprising longevity w/ this album that a lot didn't expect. A #1 peak would be a well-deserved icing on the cake. So is Red ahead of Nicki in the running for #1 or do they have equal chances?

Why does Red "deserve" it more than Ms. Minaj? Whichever album sells the most copies for the week deserves the No. 1 ranking- it's pretty cut and dry. :)

Both "Red" and "Nicki" have yet to have #1 albums. So it would be nice for either one. I loved Hard Rock but Hard Rock Christian not so much. Now i like Christian artists like MercyMe and Casting Crowns and imo those are way better bands than "Red". But those bands are more like adult contemporary rock groups while "Red" is sort of hard rock as far as christian music goes.
And while im jamming to that "Faceless" track quite a bit, still not as much as "Romans Revenge" though.

It's not a debate, but rather reminding that the charts reflect what has the most airplay and/or sales points in a given week- that's the only measure of rankings. The charts are not critics' features, after all.
Minaj's album is holding up pretty well.

The charts are not critics' features, after all. Minaj's album is holding up pretty well. I'm pretty sure we all know how charts are made. Are you aware of what opinions are? Because I think this is what everyone is getting at when they say "deserved". Obviously whatever gets the most sales gets the higher position, but when people are saying something "deserves" it more, I think they mean what the would personally like to see at the top spot. Now, I agree with you, but I also agree with those saying we don't need to dig up this debate every time it comes up.

I like both Red and Nicki, so I'll be pleased no matter who pulls out ahead. It would be a big feat for Red though, because hardly anyone knows who they are.

It's amazing, Nicki has no blockbuster hit single, but her album keeps selling, even now surpassing Kanye.

I hope Nicki's album can make it to 2xp by year-end Considering that Cash money is really supporting her grind. I expect that they want to make history. Lauryn Hill's album is technically not classified as a rap album so Nicki has the highest week sales for a female artist. She has the most charted hits from one album (6 so far...will be 9 with Save me, Dominoes, and Did it on em released soon). To top it off Missy has the highest selling solo female rap album (2.1 million). I really think they are going to push for her to sell past that so that she can claim that title as well. She just passed 1M this week...hopefully they can spend the next 11 months making this a reality.

It doesn't get any better next week as the #1 album will most likely stay below 50k for another week. Also, keep an eye out on indie country act The Civil Wars, which also could be making some noise this week in the 15-20k range. Here's how it looks headed into the weekend:
*Red (RED Ink) 40-45k Nicki Minaj (Young Money/Cash Money/Universal Motown) 35-40k Bruno Mars (New Elektra) 30-35k Kidz Bop Kids (Razor & Tie) 24-27k *Ricky Martin (Sony Music Latin) 24-27k Taylor Swift (Big Machine) 24-27k Mumford & Sons (Glassnote) 24-27k Pink (LaFace/JLG) 21-24k Rihanna (Def Jam/IDJ) 21-24k Jason Aldean (Broken Bow) 21-24k 2011 Grammy Nominees (Jive/JLG) 21-24k Black Keys (Nonesuch) 21-24k *Bob Marley & The Wailers (Tuff Gong/Island/IDJ) 21-24k Katy Perry (Capitol/EMI) 18-21k Eminem (Shady/Aftermath/Interscope) 18-21k

there is a definite decline in album sales from even a year ago, imo. I don't remember a month of record lows before. How awful!

Because every artist and group rushed for that 4Q binge hoping they could score big sales when it actually backfired. Hopefully they learn for next time. One of these weeks in January or February where there is barely any competition could have gotten Nelly, BEP or Kesha big first week sales.
