Hell yeah. Way higher than even the 100k estimation. Can't say I honestly saw this coming. Yeah, the album is more commercial sounding than I was expecting, but if I like an artist I always root for them to do well anyway. With NPR and such, I kind of thought R.E.M. were going to be off to a hotter start. I guess for Avril, she's been away for long enough and isn't has high profile this time around. If her songs end up doing well then the first week numbers won't seem so bad.

Am I the only one who is not remotely surprised by Avril's numbers? I'm not surprised either.

Am I the only one who is not remotely surprised by Avril's numbers? Her current single is representative of the core dilemma she is facing in this phase of her career. She entered the previous decade strongly, thriving on the persona of an "anti-Britney" that, in contrast to her perceived image by many at the time, to be less polished and diva-like and more aggressive and DIY-driven but still safe and listenable for mainstream radio..............and during that time, there was less competition, with Pink being her main chart rival riding on that image. Her appeal resonated and, inevitably, "Let Go" became a breakout success. Then she would hold her own on through the "Under My Skin" era because of her intention to tackle more mature topics. Frankly, I think there were already visible fissures in her foundation during the "The Best Damn Thing" era, where it felt like she was somewhat forcefully retreating back to mainstream radio instant gratification with a more poppy sound...............but it didn't matter none because she got one massive hit ("Girlfriend") that era that effectively overshadowed the reality that her subsequent releases all lacked staying power (I don't know anyone who still hears "When You're Gone" on the airwaves). I think "The Best Damn Thing" ultimately was as much a curse as it was a blessing for Avril. It was a blessing in that she got a career-defining hit single out of that, and satisfying enough sales to go with it..............but a curse in that the image she established her career on was eroding, and had little remaining to project with it anyway. Her perception of Britney Spears and more hyped and/or overproduced divas may ring as true as ever to many................yet going with a "what you see is what you get" image, or perhaps a "this is me, and I don't care if you can't accept it" image has a drawback in that you can only say so much and, conversely, when you try venturing out of the box you look calculative and pandering. "What the Hell", to me anyway, just represents that struggle to me. Especially with many more artists now seizing upon that pro-"individual"/pro-"being yourself" image that Avril initially thrived on, and anteing up with shocking music videos dripping with emotional realism, use of the F-word and appeal to the GLBTQI community among other things.............Avril just can't help but seem outdated to many...............and "What The Hell" just drips with desperation in a last-ditch drive to cater to the same listeners who are enamored with Katy Perry and Pink primarily at the moment, who also sing frequently without regret about messing around. Avril is enduring an image crisis, and I think the sales reflect that more than anything. Perhaps the rest of her new album is rich in emotion and acoustic leanings as she has promised repeatedly in the press (I've yet to hear it)..............but singles have become a dominant medium again in an age of declining album sales, and Lavigne has no one to blame but herself for allowing the anomaly to be the lead release. Namaste, Lisping Hibiscus \ the album is more acoustic but the song they are considering for 2nd single, smile, is the most like what the hell on the album

Food And Liquor was not Grammy Award Winning. It lost Best Rap Album to Ludacris "Release Therapy". Surprised HITS doesnt fact check. Great Numbers for him though.

WOAH LUPE! It's a great album...I'm happy! Poor Avril. The album has gotten pretty good reviews though. Hopefully it will hold steady :/

With regard to R.E.M., there's nothing surprising about the projected first-week figures.............but they are nonetheless a painful era-to-era drop in that "Accelerate" sold 115,000 units in its opening week (although the drop suddenly looks less painful when you consider the fact "Around The Sun" sold 61,000 copies in its first week of release)
That's less than half of the figures of "Accelerate". Poor promotion can't be blamed for the figures because I think Warner Bros. actually pushed this record aggressively in the digital realm, with as many as five tracks getting streamed on YouTube weeks before release (Buck himself has said he believes Warner Bros. has done a great job pushing this record). And given that the band have made clear they are not going to tour this record, there's little room to grow.
Considering "Around the Sun", as unpopular as it was critically, nonetheless was able to produce a lead single hit internationally and two additional Top 30 entries in the United Kingdom, while "Accelerate", as acclaimed as it was, was ignored completely across European playlists...............I can't even see this record topping "Around the Sun" sales-wise.

I feel like Avril still seems like the same teenager she was when she debuted. I have liked a lot of her songs but her personality is off putting and she doesn't seem like shes grown at all since her second album. I don't find her sales surprising at all.

I have liked a lot of her songs but her personality is off putting and she doesn't seem like shes grown at all since her second album. I don't find her sales surprising at all. I personally believe she already proved she's capable of writing in a very mature, grown-up friendly vein when "I'm With You" became a massive hit that is still heard often as a recurrent to this day. "Mobile", too, has resonated as a fan favorite. Like I said, I admit to having not heard her new record yet, so I'll withhold judgment on the new material under I give it a once-over..............but that said, I recall after listening to "The Best Damn Thing" that nothing came close to sizing up to the maturity beyond her years that Lavigne demonstrated on those aforementioned tracks, and I can't help but suspect she'll fall short this time around as well, including on the record's most intimate moments. Am I the only one who is not remotely surprised by Avril's numbers? ... Namaste, Lisping Hibiscus Extremely well put. I think both her an Xtina really exemplify the problem with defining yourself as an artist by saying you're not like someone else rather than strongly cultivating a lasting artistic identity for yourself.

Serious question, since I don't know the answer to this. What was the last RCA release to sell 200k in the US its opening week? It's not Kings of Leon's Come Around Sundown, which opened at 184k (although that album opened massively overseas, selling 183k in the UK alone). It's not either of Ke$ha's releases. Alicia Keys, maybe? (Alicia, Whitney Houston, Daughtry, Dave Matthews Band and Kelly Clarkson all had solid opening sales weeks in 2009, and Alicia was the last of those to come out). Unless I'm forgetting someone, it's been a while since the label had a big album opening, even by the sad standards of the current albums market. Alicia opened with 417K. IIRC it was the last RMG album to pass 200K its 1st week since. I think Avril's new album is good, much better than TBDT (which I didn't like,) and a return to her old sound. The problem, that is mostly with RCA imo, is that instead of promoting her with a mature image they made her return to her image from 4 years ago. There wasn't enough promo in the US to attract teens\tweens and make them want to buy her album, and presenting the same ole image alienated imo some of her previous fanbase. With the right follow-up singles (WYWH and Everybody Hurts) and an image change, I think the album could reach gold, but I don't know if RCA will continue to push it or give up after those sales. As for RCA, I hope the new management shake them up..

Avril's floppage is about as big of a non-shock as you can get.

I'm glad albums like Adele's and Lupe's are opening to big numbers and far outselling more popular radio acts. It shows that when artists put out quality they can sell.

Aw jeez. That is not good. The album Lupe had to compromise to the max to put out, and had said he's dissatisfied with on at least some level, and everyone (except here I guess?) is saying is an absolute disaster...and Atlantic gets rewarded for it. And this is only continuing the trend B.O.B started. Major labels really are toxic for hip hop.

Actually I do believe it netted him and Jill Scott a Grammy for Best Urban/Alt Performance for Daydreaming, but yes great numbers for him.

^Reported as just over 250K back in late November. So by now, probably around 265K?
Adele's album looks like it will enjoy some legs.

Several Avril fans that liked her "anti-pop princess" image also stopped caring about her after she basically became one with TBDT.
I hope the album manages to have some legs, because I think it's a step up from 'The Best Damn Thing'. I guess it depends on follow up singles, since WTH is most likely done now.
