^ The last three years seems like as reasonable a time frame as any considering they're attempting to list the cream of the crop for female pop stars right now. If they go back much more, then they'd have to expand the list to include folks like Fergie, Gwen Stefani, Nelly Furtado and even Mariah. None of these ladies would place high in any of the chosen categories without going back half decade and defeating the purpose of trying to pick the current dominant female.

It's a good time frame and maybe could be an ongoing thing they do every year. Though if the Queen title changes often, it'll become meaningless. I'll keep it to refer to Madonna for now. GaGa can have another title, as can Justin for king of pop, which is Michael's.

I never understood why people say "There can only be one Queen". Maybe only one reigning Queen. People don't stop calling the former reigning Queen "Queen" just because she's not the reigning Queen. Once a Queen, always a Queen. There can definitely be another one. Madonna may still have the thrown, but other girls are coming for it. She will ALWAYS be a Queen, but someone else at some point will have to take command.
Just like people don't stop calling President Clinton "President Clinton" because hes out of office.

Its kinda random to just pick the last two years...guess they needed to find the perfect time frame that would make Gaga #1. Are you mad because she beat out Taylor? Get over yourself. I'm not mad at all because Taylor beat Gaga in album sales AND album reviews...categories that actually matter. Gaga beat Taylor in twitter followers...wow, congrats! Haha.

LMAO what an "article". What was the purpose of this other than glorifying Lady GaGa and putting her on a pedestal?

I hardly call someone in the business 3 years having equal experience to someone whose been in the business for 30 years. until someone surpasses her massive catalog, Madonna will always remain supreme Queen, relevant or not. When Lady Gaga gets her 38th top 10 hit, then she'll be the Queen. Goes for anyone actually. Even if Madonna dies and no one surpasses her catalog, she'll still remain the Queen. yea, the girls are comin for her, but it's still decades away. Until then, they are princesses.

Funny how the time frame is tailored to give Gaga the upper hand. If the entire last decade was considered, the list might look quite different.

It's not a real distinction. When RS talks about the Queen of Pop, they obviously just mean who performed the best in the allotted years.

Though Madonna and MJ are universally known with their titles. Applying them to anyone else specifically would be impossible I feel. When was the last time a singer received a title such as this that was universally accepted? I think not since Britney was Princess of Pop. Before that... Who knows? Of course there are other titles like Godfather of Soul, King of Rock n Roll, Queen of Soul, etc.

Honorary titles are not set in stone, and they're pretty silly anyway. Let your career do the talking. Madonna can refer to herself as the queen of pop, and she's probably referred to as such more than any other singer, but there's nothing stopping Mariah Carey, Janet Jackson, Britney Spears, or Lady Gaga from using the title either, and plenty other female pop stars have. There's nothing stopping anyone else from using it. If Ke$ha's team, a journalist, or a talk-show host wants to start calling her the queen of pop, there's nothing Madonna or her team can do to stop them.

I'm referring to actual titles given to these people by media and others. Ozzy, for example, isn't the King of Heavy Metal. He was known as the Godfather of Heavy Metal and eventually the Prince of Darkness. I don't think B.B. King is known as King of Blues but something else. Father of Blues? Godfather? Something anyway.

Yes, Gaga was the queen of 2009-2011, but I wonder how they picked 2009-2011 as the ideal time period to do this on... Promo for gaga, what reputable magazine would use 3 years to do that anyway. A decade yes...3 years, come on now.

Nothing has the same impact the 2nd time around. Yep. No one will outsell her or have even equal impact much less having more impact. I just wonder how do you classify Whitney, Celine, Mariah, Janet or even Britney and Beyonce as they have proven to be hitmakers past their hype and peak. they all can't be princesses...

How's he supposed to give proof that someone could touch Madonna's career? You ask for receipts for something that's actually happened. He can't give receipts that it will happen as much as you can't that it won't.
And for the record, you're generally missing something.

No other female is going to touch her career. That's an awfully big statement. And I don't think it true. We're only months away from the 29th anniversary of Madonna's first single release. If some other girl is gonna come around and out-do Madonna's career, where is she? Like I said, nothing has the same impact the 2nd time around. What could another female act even do to touch Madonna's career? Chronology trumps all, and all of Madonna's alleged competition are coming after Madonna has already done all that she has done. Madonna was that rare mix of massive commercial success, legitimate musical and cultural impact, AND great music. Just like how no other male artist is gonna top MJ, not other female artist is gonna top Madonna.

^Indeed- that's why they are the templates for male and female in pop music (1970s-on). As much as someone like Gaga follows in Madge's footsteps, she will not reach that level- nor be thought of in the same regard. Since this is a thread about pop females and all, this write-up from Ovation TV's American Revolutionaries series nicely sums up what separates Madge from everyone else: www.citycorellc.com/projects/ovation/Artist/index.php?artist=MadonnaFew artists in American music history have managed to stay relevant, controversial and in demand for almost 30 years, like Madonna. Madonna is more than a musician and pop icon, she's a revolutionary who has carved a spot in our cultural history as a champion of gender equality and sexual empowerment. Early in her career, Madonna did more than simply define the style and sound of the 80’s, she brought substance and meaning to pop music. Madonna dared to be shocking at a time when much of American culture was heading in a more conservative direction. With strength and fortitude, Madonna brought unabashed sexuality to the feminist movement. It wasn't welcomed by everyone, but she was never one to be silenced. Throughout her career, Madonna has challenged the church, politicians and cultural mores across the world with little concern or fear for what it would do to her album sales and popularity. Madonna’s undeniable desire to stay true to herself while also reinventing herself to define the times has put her on a pedestal that few other artists have reached. Maybe that's why she's the top selling female musician of all time.

Just wait 20 years with Gaga. ;) I'm willing to bet that she will not only match, but top Madonna by then. Gaga's already touring on the level of legendary acts like Bon Jovi and Celine Dion (although she doesn't tour an awful lot).
