I think someone on VH1's coutdown said something to the effect of: "When every single female Pop star is compared to you, it means you are the greatest female Pop star of all time." :) Queen Madge. May she eternally reign. Quite. It will never be anyone else.

I have said it before, and I will say it again, Haley is the Queen of Pop. Disagree? Who locks your threads? She rules.

Precisely. Despite slw's failure to comprehend Slaps SChris butt...I like Mariah over the actual Queen of Pop so I'll take that. Good night...oh, but don't sleep ;)

Hard Candy sold more, and had a bigger hit than Mariah's last album and single. Plus accompanied by the biggest tour ever by a female artist. Receipts....there you have them.

Hard Candy's performance compared to another album has little to do with Madonna being Queen of Pop- plain and simple, it is what she did in her work, as well as its impact and influence not only on entertainment and music, but culture, that cemented that status long ago. Along with that came huge commercial success and music that has received a lot of acclaim, which sweetens the status. She is peerless- why it's Madonna and The Rest.

^Not that it matters, but as an FYI, in the USA, E=MC2 has scanned a little less than 1.3 million; Hard Candy around 739K.
Hopefully Madge's upcoming album will add to the status and be a quality effort (which HC really wasn't, compared to her most majestic work).

That literally makes no sense. So because Cassie's last album was more successful in Uzbekistan than Aretha's does that make her the Queen of Soul because you've decided she's only here for Uzbekistan? And regardless, when people look at Madonna and Mariah's success they aren't looking at E=MC2 and Hard Candy, both of which are uneventful codas in comparison to the rest of their careers. If Mariah is anything, she is the Queen of R&B, because she is an R&B artist.

Sorry to disappoint everyone but both Madonna and Mariah are extremely irrelevant to pop radio at the moment. Hate to say that because I do love Mariah to bits, but it's true. They've both had their moment as queen of pop, now it's someone else's turn.

Pop radio has absolutely nothing to do with who is Queen of Pop. Even if it was an actual title bestowed by the gays of the land rather than a nickname the media gave Madonna, it wouldn't just be based on who has had radio hits in one country in the last year. It would be based on long term career.

It would be based on long term career. Yes, but this Rolling Stone article and thread is specifically about the last 2 years, not about who is the overall queen of pop. The title of queen of pop is associated with Madonna - we all know that. I wouldn't say Mariah is the queen of pop - perhaps queen of R&B or queen of crossover considering how well her songs do on various formats. But neither is in contention for queen of current pop over the past 2 years. That's all I'm saying. And I do think pop radio has a HUGE influence in who is the queen of pop. The #1 song on pop radio always has 80+ million impressions a week, far more than a #1 on any other format out there.

Only the gays of Pulse could have a 7 page thread going at each other about who is the "real" Queen of Pop. Why does it matter?!!

My single "Snatch Your Wig" goes to radio next month, followed by my debut album "Sashay Away" in November. I'm here for Madonna's wig and soon I will have that crown. I will be the new Queen Of Pop.

No, her last studio album was Hard Candy. Mariah's last studio album was Memoirs. Not subjective. The facts remain the same, and the stats speak for themselves.

Yea I don't see how Madonna's pre-2003 sales make her the queen of pop. Maybe the Former First Lady of Pop or something. But Madonna's "Queen of Pop" is all hype and hot air from the media that she and her labeled paid off. It means nothing, because Mariah holds the title and has had a firm grasp on Mandonna's wig since 1990.

It's also ridiculous to make comparisons between Madonna's latest material and Mariah's latest material. Madonna is 12 years older than Mariah and has been releasing music 7 years longer. The fact that Madonna's 2008 album (released when she was 49 and 25 years into her career) outsold Mariah's 2009 album (released when she was 39 and 19 years into her career) says a lot. People are talking like Mariah beat Madonna in terms of longevity. Madonna released Ray of Light when she was 40, and look at the number of albums she sold and the number of hits she had post 40. Mariah has yet to release her first post-40 album.
As far as who had more cultural impact, you have to either be a child or mentally retarded to not see who had more impact. Madonna influenced all female pop stars from the 80's onward. There was no one like her before her, and pop stars still use her blueprint (including Mariah).

^That is true. As stated numerous times, Madonna and her music have loads more acclaim, reverence and importance (both culturally and in entertainment) than any other female of the last 30 years. She is peerless in that regard. That doesn't mean others are not good in their own right, but when talking about Queen of Pop, it's a no-brainer that that is Madonna. To use one of countless quotes about her importance, the history of women in popular music pretty much can be divided into Before- and After- Madonna.

I never heard that before but that's a great quote. Applies also strongly to the Beatles and Elvis as well. And MJ, though it's tougher with him as he had the Jackson 5 too. Maybe specifically Thriller for him.

Yes, no doubt Madonna is (maybe) The Queen of pop But please remember, it's about timing, when Madonna made her 2 huge post 40 albums (Ray Of Light and Music), album sales were still huge. Now, this is 2011, album sales decline already. Of course when Mariah releases her first post 40 album, it won't sell huge even if it becomes a super massive blockbuster album with lots of hit singles. And there is no point to compare Madonna and Mariah, their music style is even so different. Pop/dance and R&B/Hip Hop. Mariah decided to go R&B/Hip Hop route in 1997 that's why her album sales dropped so hard outside US, especially in Europe where urban sound is not popular.
