Yes, the record label may have made mistakes in the "remix" and pricing timing, but let's not act like it's a big fail if this singles does not hit No. 1 on the Hot 100. Actually it is, mainly because of how desperate the label seems to be for that #1 that they're throwing out all these tricks and none of them are working. That is why this will be seen as a big fail and it will leave a stigma for people to drag her with. People would have called it desperate regardless, the minute she did the remix but discounting it as well made it worse and the fact that she still couldn't get the #1 made that even worse. And now it's being discounted for a 2nd week which makes it even worse. Can you imagine if she misses it another week? even worseAnd I don't think it being 5th single even matters at all considering Kathy is more of a singles artist anyway. She is used primarily for hits by the public, they probably don't care if she has 10 singles out, they could all very well be #1 it seems. How do you get #1 in sales and airplay and still fail to hit #1 on the HOT 100. That's called a record company screw up particularly in this case. It's Capitol! Sony or Jive would've made sure LFN hit #1 when it broke pop airplay records and was a #1 selling single.

Regardless of any discounting, let's look at the realities of this: a fifth single reaches No. 1 on Hot 100 Airplay, sees pretty decent singles sales, and spends multiple weeks at No. 2 on the Hot 100. How many other fifth singles in recent times have achieved what "Last Friday Night" has, pre-single discounts or not? Come on, I'm waiting... Yes, the record label may have made mistakes in the "remix" and pricing timing, but let's not act like it's a big fail if this singles does not hit No. 1 on the Hot 100. Records, schmecords. lots of 5th singles have reached the top 10. This one fared well on its own merits. The gimmick may still get this to number one but if it doesn't, I wouldn't be too shocked. This song has been available on itunes for a year. The recent songs to employ the remix gimmick were not quite as old.

^In the history of the Hot 100, a number of fifth singles have hit the top 10- but not too many in recent times, let alone No. 2. Like said, this did extremely well on its own pre-tactic chart merits.
And, again, if the label had been smarter and gotten a red-hot of-the-moment act onto the "remix" rather than Missy Elliott, it more than likely would have resulted in bigger sales for said "remix." But, it missed the boat on that one. The effect may not have been as big as that for tracks like "S&M" and "Till the World Ends," but probably enough to leave a comfortable gap in Hot 100 points between itself and "Party Rock Anthem."

As far as albums with 5 top ten hits and so forth. I do have a thread on that with a comprehensive list around somewhere.

Capitol has done everything they could.

^What's not, the track? Of course it it- it wouldn't be where it is if it was not resonating with the audience. The "remix," another story.

It has Sold 2Million Already. Which is unheard of for a 5th Single form a Year old Album.

Few albums do sell like gangbusters these days- so, that does not diminish the sales feats of Perry's singles.

^That would be understandable. It just has the token rap parts tacked on, fro man act who is not all that commercially viable at the moment.

Sad that she had to end her era on such a sour note, I was thinking "Peacock" cold be released but now I'm not so sure as it will probably just f*ck her over even more. She's falling back into "Thinking Of You" mode again!

The Total for the album is 1,683,818 which is Excellent in the current Sales Climate. I'm sure by the End of the Year the Album will be 2X Platinum. In total All singles from the Album have sold over 20 million copies.

LOL @ ending the era on a "sour note"- just because LFN may not advance one position on the Hot 100. But, that's what happens when one enjoys such massive singles success, I suppose- some expect nothing but the absolute top of the mountain. I mean, there's no question her label is into the charts and all that, and played the game (though not as well as it could have, for reasons discussed) but, still, this is the furthest thing from "sour."

LOL @ ending the era on a "sour note" Why are you laughing? I can't stand people who make fun whenever someone underperforms on the charts. Success isn't all that matters and I'm sure Katy still has a fair share of supporters regardless of her position. Everyone has a disappointment here and there in their career sometime, it's nothing new. For Bey it's "Ego/Work It Out" For Rih it's "We Ride/Rockstar/CKB" And for Katy it's "Thinking Of You/LFN" Leave her alone.

Not laughing AT Katy. It's like saying it's a sour note for someone "only" having $999,000,000 dollars instead of a billion. The success is already huge.

That 69 cent promo Itunes is doing is really working. That gets people to the page and once they are there they purchase.
