Nippy wasn't Nippy until IMBT, right?
Depends what your idea of a legend is, but I'd say being the fourth artist & first woman to debut at #1 on the Billboard 200 with 4 consecutive #1 songs by that time pretty much defines the term.

^Chart feats do not determine legendary status- with all the discussion, thought we all understood that by now. :) Not saying anything about Nippy in particular, just in general.
A 60% dip for MKIA is not too promising.

It's amazing that homophobe Mandisa managed to appeal to more than 100,000 people who were willing to buy an album of hers.

No. Before Whitney second album came out, WH(her first album) was the BEST SELLING DEBUT ALBUM in America..eventually going DIAMOND! By mid 1988 she had 7 CONSECUTIVE #1 IN AMERICA (among which SAMLFY #1 in US and UK and IWDWS(WLM) #1 in US,UK and Europe)..plus other top ten singles).. and she'd already sold tens of millions of albums WORLDWIDE! I know her best selling album is TBG and most known single is IWALY but even if she stopped her carreer in 1988-89 she would have been remembered as an 80's icon (or legend).. So the answer to your non-question is: NO.

The moment she became a legend was the moment the whole world heard IWALY. #trufax Actually she became a legend when she was the first female artist to ever go to No1 on the very first week of release of her album "Whitney". Not to mention winning two grammys best pop vocal performarce over veterans like Tina and Barbra (which was quite rare on those times...so hard to win a Grammy) and a record 5 AMAS in year (for a female artist)

Remember, back then NOTHING ever debuted at #1. It had happened 4 times before in history. There was so much pent-up demand for Whitney's 2nd album that her debut at #1 made headlines worldwide.

www.billboard.com/#/column/chartbeat/tony-bennett-oldest-living-artist-ever-on-1005362002.storyTony Bennett Oldest Living Artist Ever On Hot 100 At 85 years and two months, the iconic Tony Bennett becomes the oldest living artist ever to grace the Billboard Hot 100, as "Body and Soul," with the late Amy Winehouse, bows at No. 87. "Body," which previews Bennett's "Duets II," due to storm next week's Billboard 200, sold 25,000 downloads in its first week, according to Nielsen SoundScan. (The song marks the third Hot 100 appearance for Winehouse, who died July 23 at age 27. She reached No. 9 with "Rehab" in 2007 and No. 77 with "You Know I'm No Good" in 2008). All charts, including the Hot 100 and Billboard 200, will be refreshed tomorrow (Sept. 22) on Billboard.com. Bennett passes the late George Burns, who was 84-years and two-months-old when the ironically titled "I Wish I Was Eighteen Again" wrapped its chart run the week of March 22, 1980. That's not the only Hot 100 record that Bennett claims this week. Having last appeared on the ranking the week of Nov. 25, 1967, Bennett's span of 43 years, 10 months and one week away from the chart marks the list's longest hiatus among solo artists. Bennett passes a record established just two months ago, when R&B icon Otis Redding posthumously bowed as a guest on Jay-Z and Kanye West's tribute track "Otis." With the entrance, Redding's name appeared on the chart after a gap of 42 years, one month and two weeks. Among all acts, Bennett is second only to the Chipmunks, who ended a 45-year, one-week wait when "The Chipmunk Song (Christmas Don't Be Late) (2007)" debuted the week of Jan. 5, 2008. Having ranked on the very first Hot 100 dated Aug. 4, 1958 (with "Young and Warm and Wonderful," at No. 59), Bennett additionally reigns as the artist with the longest span of appearing on the chart, as his Hot 100 discography blankets the tally's entire 53-year, two-month existence. Bennett's secret to his seeming agelessness? "I had great training. I still live by what they taught me at school, at the American Theatre Wing: the proper way to handle yourself and your voice, on and offstage. "I never compromised. I always said: never do something just for a quick buck. Even if a song (wasn't) a hit, it was well-written, with great musicians. That's been the premise. "And, at 85, it's just starting to pay off."

Cute, l!nk!nfan815, but you should certainly know it was a heckuva lot more than that that has given that act the reverence and status she has enjoyed- template-setting pop music, stage shows and videos, using entertainment and music as a stepping stone for cultural issues, etc. etc. :) Anyhow, no, chart feats do not make legendary acts. Is Katy Perry a legend because she has five no. 1 hits from one album? Is Westlife a legendary act because it scored 14 No. 1 hits in the UK? Yes, right up there with The Beatles, that Westlife is. And as we know, Mimi Carey, Rihanna and others certainly are not regarded as other acts with a high amount of No. 1 hits. But, that's here nor there. Yay for Tony B. sneaking onto the Hot 100. Though it's very safe to say that he probably would not have charted on his own.

The speed of Rihanna's releases makes me think of the sixties (not that was I alive then, but you know...) Aretha Franklin released 12 albums between 1964 and 1972.. The Beatles released over a dozen albums from 1963-1970, and The Supremes released 13 between 1964-1968. You could almost say that Rihanna's release speed makes her a a super throwback artist. The '60s would have been a great time to be a fan of one of those artists, it seems. Though, what was the average album length back then? 8-10 songs? Most of the Beatles' original British albums had an average of 14 songs on them.

www.billboard.com/news#/news/maroon-5-christina-aguilera-s-jagger-atop-1005365102.storyMaroon 5, Christina Aguilera's 'Jagger' Atop Hot 100 For Third Weekby Gary Trust, N.Y. | September 21, 2011 As previously reported, the Billboard Hot 100's splashiest headline this week comes courtesy of Tony Bennett, who becomes the oldest living artist ever to appear on the tally. His duet with Amy Winehouse, "Body and Soul," enters the chart at No. 88, lifting the 85-year-old past then-84-year-old George Burns (in 1980) for the esteemed honor. Still, other news infuses this week's chart. Maroon 5's "Moves Like Jagger," featuring Christina Aguilera, spends a third week at No. 1 on the Hot 100, roaring to the No. 1 spot on Radio Songs and holding atop Digital Songs. "Jagger" blasts 5-1 on Radio Songs with a 14% gain to 123 million all-format audience impressions, according to Nielsen BDS. The song marks Maroon 5's first No. 1 on the chart, passing the twin No. 5 peaks of "This Love" and "She Will Be Loved" in 2004. Aguilera celebrates her third time singing on the country's most-heard song: her debut pop smash "Genie in a Bottle" reigned for three weeks in 1999 and "Lady Marmalade," with Lil' Kim, Mya and P!nk, led for six frames in 2001. The 5-1 vault of "Jagger" on Radio Songs is the greatest since Jay-Z and Alicia Keys' "Empire State of Mind" bounded 6-1 on the Nov. 28, 2009, chart. "Jagger" leads Digital Songs for a fourth frame with 221,000 downloads sold (up 1%), according to Nielsen SoundScan. Former Hot 100 No. 1 "Someone Like You" by Adele holds at No. 2 for a second week with Airplay Gainer honors. The ballad jumps into the Radio Songs top 10 (13-9), surging by 37% to 84 million. The track is the Greatest Gainer on Pop Songs (16-13) and Adult Contemporary (14-13), while bulleting at No. 4 on Triple A, No. 5 on Adult Pop Songs and No. 27 on Rock Songs. Foster the People's "Pumped Up Kicks" holds at No. 3 on the Hot 100 for a fourth week. The song pushes 10-8 on Radio Songs (90 million, up 11%) and remains at No. 3 on Digital Songs (186,000, down 4%). LMFAO's former six-week No. 1 - and Billboard's official song of the summer - "Party Rock Anthem," featuring Lauren Bennett and GoonRock (4-4) and Gym Class Heroes' "Stereo Hearts," featuring Maroon 5 lead singer Adam Levine (6-5), round out the Hot 100's top five. The latter song advances 5-4 on Digital Songs (144,000, down 1%) and 16-14 on Radio Songs (63 million, up 9%). Bad Meets Evil's "Lighters," featuring Bruno Mars, slips 5-6 on the Hot 100 and Cobra Starship's "You Make Me Feel...," featuring Sabi, lifts 11-7 after reaching a previous high point of No. 8 two weeks ago. "Feel" flies to its new peak thanks to gains in digital sales (130,000, up 2%) and airplay (60 million, up 10%). Closing out the Hot 100's top 10 are Rihanna's "Cheers (Drink to That)" (10-8); Nicki Minaj's "Super Bass" (7-9); and, Lady Gaga's "You and I" (8-10). Outside the Hot 100's top tier, David Guetta's "Without You," featuring Usher, claims Digital Gainer accolades, charging 23-15. It roars 18-10 on Digital Songs, increasing by 71% to 104,000. In addition to Bennett's bow with Winehouse, five other songs enter the Hot 100, led by Coldplay's "Paradise" at No. 16. The follow-up to the No. 14-peaking "Every Teardrop Is a Waterfall" opens as the band's third-highest debut, following "Speed of Sound" (No. 8, 2005) and "Viva La Vida" (No. 15, 2008). "Paradise," the second single from the band's fifth studio album, "Mylo Xyloto," due Oct. 24, begins on Digital Songs at No. 6 (139,000). Radio is already supporting the song, as it launches on the Triple A adult alternative chart at No. 11 and Alternative Songs at No. 24. "Paradise" goes to pop and adult pop radio Oct. 3. All charts, including the Hot 100, Digital Songs and Radio Songs, will be refreshed tomorrow (Sept. 22) on Billboard.com.

How a woman can express herself? please. Everyone knows the "I absolutely hate hydrangeas" legendary star made it to the top for pushing the boundaries of sex. That's about it apparently. Since her chart feats had nothing to do with it according to you. I guess thats it, in order to be a legend one must be a whore.

Anyhow, no, chart feats do not make legendary acts. Putting Mariah in the same sentence as Katy Perry, Westlife and Rihanna is a crime, just because she's among acts who scored many #1s. Mariah has her own league. She's not only a chart machine. She wrote/co-write most of her materials. She has one of the best vocals out there. She has inspired other singers. I know some of friend wants to be a singer because of Mariah Carey. That's called impact! Her chart achievement is just one of many factors which help her to be a legend. I'm sure you'll NEVER consider Mariah as a legend even until her death. (i don't know why do you love to discredit her impact) But i know, tons of people consider her as a legend. Just like you consider Madonna as a legend.

Week Ending Sept. 18, 2011. Songs: Tony Sets A Record
Posted 51 minutes ago by Paul Grein
in Chart Watch
"Body And Soul" by Tony Bennett featuring Amy Winehouse enters the Hot 100 at #87. It enables Bennett to set one record and to approach a couple others. Bennett, 85, is the oldest artist ever to land a Hot 100 hit. He's a year older than George Burns, who was a day away from turning 84 in January 1980 when he began a 10-week run with "I Wish I Was Eighteen Again.".
Bennett first charted in June 1951 with "Because Of You," which went on to hit #1. This gives Bennett a 60-year span of hits, which is close to a record. Louis Armstrong had hits spanning nearly 62 years. His first, "Muskrat Ramble," was popular in 1926, before the advent of definitiveweekly charts. Satchmo's last was "What A Wonderful World" in 1988. The song, which Armstrong recorded in 1967, became a top 40 hit after it was featured in the Robin Williams movie Good Morning, Vietnam..
(But Bennett has an advantage over Armstrong: He has lived to enjoy this late-career success. Armstrong died in 1971, at age 69.).
.
"Body And Soul" is Bennett's first song to crack the Hot 100 since his original version of "For Once In My Life" in the fall of 1967. (Stevie Wonder covered the song the following year and had a smash hit with it.) Billboard's Gary Trust reports that this nearly 44-year gap between Hot 100 hits is the second longest in the history of the Hot 100. Only the Chipmunks went longer (45 years) between chart hits..
The just-released Duets II will become the highest-charting album of Bennett's career next week. The only question is whether it will dislodge Lady Antebellum's Own The Night to debut at #1, or will finish just behind Lady A's album at #2..
Bennett was just 24 when he landed his first hit, which is hard to imagine since we have known him for so long as "the hip old guy who keeps on going." Bennett had three #1 hits in the early '50s: "Because Of You," "Rags To Riches" and a pop version of Hank Williams' "Cold, Cold Heart." Bennett's highest-charting hit of the 1960s was "I Wanna Be Around," which reached #14 in 1963. (His signature song, the elegant "I Left My Heart In San Francisco," peaked at #19 in 1962.).
"Body And Soul" marks Winehouse's first appearance on the Hot 100 since her death on July 23. It's her third Hot 100 hit, following "Rehab" and "You Know I'm No Good.".
"Body And Soul" debuts at #40 in the U.K. It's Bennett's first U.K. chart hit since "The Very Thought Of You" in late 1965 and early 1966..
"Body And Soul" was already an oldie when Bennett began his career. Paul Whiteman and his Orchestra introduced the song in 1930. The song has been recorded by many musical giants, including Louis Armstrong, Benny Goodman, Art Tatum and Billie Holiday. In his reference book Pop Memories 1890-1954, chart researcher Joel Whitburn includes a list of the 100 most recorded songs of that 65-year period. "Body And Soul" ranks fourth, behind "Silent Night," "St. Louis Blues" and "Star Dust.".
Remarkably, "Body And Soul" isn't the oldest song on this week's Hot 100. "Police Dog Blues," recorded by actor Hugh Laurie, was introduced by Blind Blake in 1929. Laurie's record drops from #58 to #74 in its second week..
Two weeks ago, Lil Wayne set a new record for the most simultaneous Hot 100 hits by a solo artist (12). Since the Hot 100 dates to 1958, this sounds like a really big deal. It's a noteworthy achievement, but it's not as big a deal as it seems. Let me explain..
Lil Wayne broke the record for a solo artist that was jointly held by David Cook and Taylor Swift. Cook placed 11 songs on the Hot 100 the week of June 7, 2008, in the wake of his victory on American Idol. Swift put 11 songs on the chart the week of Nov. 13, 2010, the week her album Speak Now debuted at #1..
The only other artist in Hot 100 history to have 11 or more songs on the Hot 100 simultaneously was the Beatles, which had 14 songs on the chart the week of April 11, 1964. The Beatles didn't just do it because they had a new album out or were that season's winner on a hit TV show. The Beatles created a level of excitement in pop culture that was virtually unprecedented..
The very fact that three of the four biggest chart sweeps by any artist or group in the 53-year history of the Hot 100 have occurred in the past 3-1/2 years suggests that it's too easy to get on the chart nowadays..
Another indication that it's too easy to get on the chart these days is that these songs have so little staying power. Nine of Swift's 11 charted songs, and eight of Cook's, dropped off the Hot 100 the following week. Six of Lil Wayne's 12 charted songs dropped off the following week..
By contrast, only three of the Beatles' 14 charted songs dropped off the Hot 100 the week following their sweep. (And another Beatles song debuted that week, bringing their "week-after" total to 12.).
Bottom line: Lil Wayne had 12 songs on the chart simultaneously simply because he's a big star who released a hot album. The next big star to release a hot album will probably fare about the same. (Lil Wayne's total was boosted by his featured credits on hits by DJ Khaled and Kelly Rowland.).
"Hotness" is a hard thing to measure. At the peak of his Thriller success, Michael Jackson was much hotter than Lil Wayne was two weeks ago. You didn't have to be a chart follower, or even a pop music fan, to know that Jackson was in orbit. He even made the cover of TIME in 1984. But if you weren't up on the latest chart news, you wouldn't have had any idea that Lil Wayne, Swift and Cook were setting all-time records..
It's hard to make exact comparisons from one era to another. There are too many variables. But there should be at least a rough sense of scale in achievements. I think Billboard should adjust its chart methodology so that chart record-setting success isn't so fleeting. It would make these achievements mean more..
"Moves Like Jagger" by Maroon 5 featuring Christina Aguilera tops the Hot 100 for the third week. This equals Maroon5's "Makes Me Wonder," which spent three weeks on top in the spring of 2007. Three of Aguilera's singles have had longer runs on top. "Genie In A Bottle" and "Lady Marmalade" (with Lil' Kim, Mya & P!nk) both had five weeks on top; "Come On Over Baby (All I Want Is You)" had four..
Since Mick Jagger gets a name-check in the song, I'll add that only two Rolling Stones songs have had three or more weeks at #1. 1965's "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" and 1969's "Honky Tonk Women" both topped the chart for four weeks..
How important was The Voice in turning this song into a smash? Very important. In 2008, Maroon5 recorded a collabo with Rihanna, "If I Never See Your Face Again," which stalled at #51. Last year, a pairing with Lady Antebellum, "Out Of Goodbyes," "bubbled under" the chart at #103. Both of these other acts were on fire at the time. But there wasn't a TV tie-in..
Gym Class Heroes' "Stereo Hearts" (featuring Adam Levine) jumps from #6 to #5. It's Gym Class Heroes' second top five hit. "Cupid's Chokehold," which featured Patrick Stump of Fall Out Boy, reached #4 in March 2007. "Stereo Hearts" tops the 1 million mark in digital sales this week. "Cupid's Chokehold" has sold 1,936,000 copies..
Here's the low-down on this week's top 10 songs..
1. Maroon 5 featuring Christina Aguilera, "Moves Like Jagger." The song holds at #1 for the third week in its 13th week on the chart. This is its eighth week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #1 (221K)..
2. Adele, "Someone Like You." The former #1 song holds at #2 in its 11th week on the chart. This is its third week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #2 (199K)..
3. Foster The People, "Pumped Up Kicks." The song holds at #3 for the fourth week in its 21st week on the chart. This is its sixth week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #3 (186K)..
4. LMFAO featuring Lauren Bennett & GoonRock, "Party Rock Anthem." The former #1 song holds at #4 for the third week in its 26th week on the chart. This is its 18th week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #5 (143K)..
5. Gym Class Heroes featuring Adam Levine, "Stereo Hearts." The song jumps from #6 to #5 in its 14th week on the chart. This is its third week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #4 (144K)..
6. Bad Meets Evil featuring Bruno Mars, "Lighters." The song dips from #5 to #6 in its 14th week on the chart. This is its eighth week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #11 (82K)..
7. Cobra Starship featuring Sabi, "You Make Me Feel..." The song rebounds from #11 to #7 in its 10th week on the chart. This is its second week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #7 (130K)..
8. Rihanna, "Cheers (Drink To That)." The song jumps from #10 to #8 in its eighth week on the chart. This is its second week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #9 (120K)..
9. Nicki Minaj, "Super Bass." The song drops from #7 to #9 in its 21st week on the chart. This is its 15th week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #12 (77K)..
10. Lady Gaga, "You And I." The song drops from #8 to #10 in its seventh week on the chart. This is its third week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #8 (121K)..
.
Lil Wayne's "How To Love" drops from #9 to #12, ending an 11-week run in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #13 (71K)..
"Without You" by David Guetta featuring Usher jumps from #23 to #15 in its third week. It's vying to become Guetta's third top 10 hit; Usher's 17th. Digital sales rank: #10 (104K). .
Coldplay's "Paradise" bows at #16. It's vying to become the band's third top 10 hit, following "Speed Of Sound" (#8 in 2005) and "Viva La Vida" (#1 in 2008). Digital sales rank: #6 (139K). Coldplay's recent hit, "Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall," reached #14. (With a better title, it might have made the top 10.).
Dev's "In The Dark" jumps from #20 to #18 in its seventh week...Blake Shelton's "God Gave Me You" jumps from #31 to #24 in its 10th week..
Two acts with current top 10 hits have follow-ups that are moving briskly up the chart. LMFAO's "Sexy And I Know It" vaults from #50 to #25 in its third week....Nicki Minaj's "Fly" (featuring Rihanna, who is also in the top 10) jumps from #75 to #58 in its fourth week..
Alexandra Stan's "Mr. Saxobeat" jumps from #33 to #29 in its 10th week. The dance/pop hit could have been a hit for Gloria Estefan and Miami Sound Machine 20 or 25 years ago. It reminds me of such early hits of theirs as "Conga" and "Rhythm Is Gonna Get You." I'm sure Stan would be thrilled to have the longevity in this business that Estefan has had, both with and without hits..
We all know that Cee Lo Green's "F**k You (Forget You)" put a taboo word into the pop consciousness (even if radio stations played the tame "Forget You" version). Now, Jay-Z and Kanye West doing the same with another, even more taboo word. "Ni**as In Paris" jumps from #67 to #50 in its sixth week. If the song keeps going, let's see how Top 40 DJs introduce that title. .
Andy Grammer's extremely appealing "Keep Your Head Up" jumps from #57 to #53. Argent had a top five hit in the summer of 1972 called "Hold Your Head Up." They're both good, but I think I prefer this zippy tune..
"That Way" by Wale featuring Jeremih & Rick Ross leaps from #91 to #75 in its third week...J. Cole's "Work Out" jumps from #98 to #79 in its third week...Darius Rucker's country hit "I Got Nothin'" debuts at #84..
Hot Chelle Rae's zesty "Tonight Tonight" tops the 2 million mark in digital sales this week..
Country singer Jake Owen lands his first million-seller with "Barefoot Blue Jean Night.".

Anyhow, no, chart feats do not make legendary acts. Mariah is certainly a legend. There is no doubt about it. Madonna (first and foremost), and then Janet and Mariah and Aretha, are the last super diva legends of all time left on this earth. We should be cherishing them all, not discrediting them. HG, just admit you can't wait for the next Mariah lead single to follow on the charts.

I'm locking this so people can cool down. Perhaps warnings for trolling are necessary?

Re-opening. Back to the Hot 100 and not to the diva/legend/pitting one singer against another BS. Doing so earns another lock and whatever else.
