It can't be sales because Low for example is far too low. I have a horrible feeling that I Gotta Feeling will be number one.

I think it's based on a 'greatest' title. IE. how good/memorable/impactful/popular/etc it was.
Seems a little low for Before He Cheats.

Is this viewer-dictated or chosen by VH1? In either event, it's a very commercially oriented list- check out those first 10; ain't a big critical hit in the lot.

Low should be way higher, no matter what it's based on.

Here's hoping 2000 or 2001 won't be underrepresented on this list.

One thing is for sure- this VH1 list is going to look EXTREMELY different from most other Best of 2000s lists. It probably looked at Billboard lists of the year's biggest hits and compiled it. The big hits that actually were critical hits, that I'd expect to see high on the list, include "Since U Been Gone" and "Toxic." While its critical success was nowhere near the aforementioned two, "We Belong Together" probably will appear, since it was such a big hit.

Ooh. A look at the 2000s from a mainstream/impact point of view. Only it's VH1. I tried to compile a list like this a few months back on here. Only got 5 or 6 votes. Maybe I'll tabulate them and post the results and call it a day.

It probably looked at Billboard lists of the year's biggest hits and compiled it. it can't be quite that simple, though. "Here It Goes Again" barely cracked the Top 40, but I'm assuming VH1 included it because of what a viral hit the video was, so there's obviously some kind of "pop-culture impact" factor they're including beyond just chart points.

Two that really stick out are Behind These Hazel Eyes and Toxic. Those never get old for me.

Seems a little low for Before He Cheats. My thoughts exactly. With total unbias, I understand why the other 9 are ranked in the 90s, but BHC made much more of an impact than any of the others ranked above it on the first given ten. I would've expected it to land in the 60s or 70s.

PTB- are we REALLY using the Grammys as an example of critical success? Sometimes a bonafide critical smash sneaks in to Record of the Year, but more often not. "Can't Get You Out of My Head" is another big critical hit that I'd expect to see on this VH1 list.

Why, because I know how acts/music are regarded on best-of features? Why thank you, then. ;) Plain and simple, from the looks of it, this VH1 list is sure to be chock full of tracks that did not fare well on those. But, in actuality, "Thong Song" was a mild critical success on year-end lists (it is ranked at the Acclaimed Music site- not sure if it will stay top 3000 once the next update comes, which will include lists for 2008 and 2009 tracks, decade-end lists, and some other all-time lists).

Here's hoping "Hanging by a Moment" places at least top 10. That song was inescapable in 2001, and I tapped it for the top of my personal decade list. Like someone else said, though, I hope it's not tilted toward the latter end of the decade at the top.

While its critical success was nowhere near the aforementioned two, "We Belong Together" probably will appear, since it was such a big hit. The song won 2 Grammys and reviews for the album regarded it as one of the best (if not the best) song on the record. Not to mention its recurrent success and the significance it holds for her career. Its acclaim will increase with time. It wouldn't be the first time a song or an album gets better reviews as the years go by. It has already happened with the Butterfly album or some of her 90s singles (i.e. 'Fantasy'). And it's #2412 on that Acclaimed Music site. It's really that hard to recognize her something, huh?

^I'm well aware of its placement at the Acclaimed Music site- which is not indicative of hugely successful critical hit (same for the album). The Butterfly album only has had a few major citations- since you went to the AM site, you probably saw that. As for "Fantasy"- it's had three major citations total- one Slant's recent list (Slant), it was on one of Q's 1000 Songs lists and had a single year-end citation (a Sweden publication). And for a lesser citation, it was one of seven Mimi tracks in that 10,001 Songs to Download ("Breakdown"- a track with little acclaim prior) was her entry in the main 1,001 section). With a lot of older albums, there wasn't much in the way of year-end lists and all- that really seemed to explode in the 90s and beyond. For albums released in the 90s-beyond, the compiled lists are pretty indicative of albums' critical showing and how things could shape out in the future. For instance, Bjork- just look at all her critical success. She's likely one to continue racking up acclaim on best-of lists as time goes by. Same for PJ Harvey. Among mainstream females, not many since 1990 have been largely acclaimed acts. I'm sure Stefani Gaga will appear on the AM site when the next update hits. The point is, for this list, big commercial success definitely is playing a role. On that note, friday, I' would not be shocked to see "Hanging By a Moment" appear. :)

^No, not impossible- I'm sure Mimi may get a citation here and there,. but I would not expect her critical showing to improve dramatically by any means. I mean, even Slant, which throws her a bone now and then, didn't feature her in its recent Best of the 90s list (after including Butterfly in a 50 Pop Albums feature several years back).

Wasn't 'Fantasy' included? Or is it some other list? Anyway, I don't expect her to become a critical darling at all. I'm cool with what she gets, except for those reviews where the bias is blatant.

^"Fantasy" appeared on Slant's recent Best Singles of the 90s list (I mentioned that in the earlier post). Back to VH1's Best Mainstream Hits of the 2000s. Doesn't VH1 usually release the list in advance of the show? I don't recall there being solicitation for votes, but then again, I didn't recall that for the VMAs, either.
