IT’S A COLE WORLD Jay-Z Protégé Rapper’s Debut Album to Bow at #1 with 225-250k Possible, blink-182, Wilco, Chikenfoot, Switchfoot Next
September 28, 2011
Meet Jermaine Lamarr Cole, hip-hop’s newest superstar.
The German-born rapper J. Cole, who grew up in Fayetteville, NC, then went to school on a scholarship to St. John’s in Queens before getting discovered by Jay-Z, who made him the first signing to his Roc Nation label through Columbia, debuts at #1 with Cole World: The Sideline Story.
The album, which features collaborations with his mentor, as well as Trey Songz, Drake and Missy Elliott, has surpassed even label expectations with prospects of a sales total approaching 225-250k its first week. Cole had steadily built a following with a trio of well-received mixtapes, including last year’s Friday Night Lights.
Cole just finished a stint as the opening act on the just-concluded Rihanna Loud tour, where rumors of a steamy romance and sex tape have filled the Internet blogosphere, though it’s being roundly denied. She appears in the video for the album’s second single, “Can‘t Get Enough,” shot in her native Barbados with Cole and Trey Songz after the tour ended.
Veteran Interscope Orange County punk-rockers Blink-182’s Neighborhoods, their sixth overall, and first in more than eight years, since 2003’s self-titled effort, should debut with between 130-150k, pretty good for a band that’s been away that long.
dbpm/Anti- recording artists Wilco return with their first-ever self-release, the highly touted The Whole Love, on track for 70-75k.
eOne supergroup Chickenfoot—the all-star collab featuring Sammy Hagar, Joe Satriani, Michael Anthony and Chili Pepper drummer Chad Smith—are back with their strangely named second album Chickenfoot III, which Hagar explains is his way of avoiding the sophomore jinx. First-week estimates see a total from 50-60k
On the other hand, Atlantic veteran San Diego spiritual rockers Switchfoot’s Vice Verses, their eighth studio album in a career that began in 1997, is on track for 45-50k
Reprise young Atlanta metallurgists Mastodon’s fifth studio album, The Hunter, is next up with estimates of 35-40k in first-week sales.
Geffen’s deluxe Nirvana Nevermind reissue, timed to coincide with the album’s 20th anniversary, should do between 24-27k.
Roadrunner veteran heavy rockers Machine Head, the Oakland metal heads who released their first album in 1994, see their latest, Unto the Locust, debut with 18-21k in sales.
Verve’s Gloria Estefan album, Miss Little Havana, featuring her collaboration with Pharrell Williams, her first English language album since 2003’s Unwrapped, will bow as a Target exclusive with 17-20k.
Capitol/EMI Music reissues all 14 Pink Floyd albums this week, with perennial best-seller Dark Side of the Moon leading the way with 14-17k.
Album sales were down 5% vs. last week, up 5% vs. same week last year and up 3% year to date. Track sales were down 1% vs. last week, up 8% vs. same week last year and up 11% year to date. TEA (Track Equivalent Album) sales are down 4% vs. last week, up 6% vs. same week last year and up 5% year to date.

Wow! Awesome numbers for J. Cole! :)
And 130-150 for Blink 182? That's actually pretty good :)

Surprised with their Mastodon prediction. Would have expected that one to be at least 50k. Should just manage the Top 10 though even with HITS' prediction.
Machine Head look set for a solid debut with their best sales and chart performance in the US to date.

Very unaware with the #1. Shame Gloria Estefan couldn't debut with higher numbers. And I'm suprised J. Cole can apparently shift more albums than Rihanna.

DAMN. No Hit single or anything, that's nice as hell. and Rihanna has touch 200k with Loud, so she can still reach even higher.

Amazing numbers for J. Cole, although a bit expected, and positive surprise for Blink 182.. Never thought they'd sell that much after the single flopped hard.

Amazing for Cole. If he had a big hit single on multiple formats he would have topped 300K easy.

Oh my DAMN J. Cole. I figured he would open decently (like, over 100k), even without a big urban hit yet, because I know he has had a really loyal underground following for a while. Hip-hop is a different beast from pop in that way (which is why I find his situation incomparable to an act like Rihanna, even if he did open for her). But still, I wasn't expecting that at all. He has a good chance of selling gold before the end of the year! Good on him. Haven't heard the album myself yet, will have to check it out.
Derulo didn't push his CD back but he should have. He wasn't a strong seller even with a top 5 hit so I don't know why he/Beluga Heights thought it was a good idea to stick with this date when DWGH only went top 20 and IG is still in its early stage of climbing. His promotion for the singles and album have felt almost nonexistent to me, so it's not surprising. Shame, though.
Oh, Daughtry IS going to be out in time for Black Friday? When is the lead single going to come out? I haven't heard anything. I should keep up with his thread more.

^Thanks! Just checked his thread and yeah, he apparently posted it on his website on the 15th. Yep; there are actually two this time--"Crawling Back To You" for CHR/HAC and "Renegade" for rock. Guess I shouldn't be surprised that Switchfoot opened around 30k since they haven't had a big hit in years. Hopefully this era will change that--it's likely to be in my top 5 albums of the year.

J. Cole's 'World' Album Headed for No. 1 on Billboard 200
September 28, 2011 By Keith Caulfield, Los Angeles
Watch for J. Cole to debut atop the Billboard 200 next week with his first album "Cole World: the Sideline Story," which could move as many as 240,000 to 250,000 copies by week's end on Oct. 2, so say industry prognosticators.
If the 26-year old Roc Nation/Columbia rapper opens at No. 1, it will mark the first time a solo act's debut album has bowed at No. 1 since May 14, 2010. That's when B.o.B started in the penthouse with "The Adventures of Bobby Ray" with 84,000 sold according to Nielsen SoundScan.
Cole's 200,000-plus start would be the biggest bow for any act's debut chart effort since Nicki Minaj's "Pink Friday" launched with 375,000 at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 dated Dec. 11, 2010.
Meanwhile, Blink-182's new "Neighborhoods" is aiming to for No. 2 next week with around 140,000. The album is the rock trio's first studio release since its 2003 self-titled set. It debuted and peaked at No. 3 with 313,000 sold in its first week.
This week's No. 1, Tony Bennett's Columbia set "Duets II," could slip to No. 3 or 4, depending on how the week shakes out. With Cole on Columbia as well, we could see back-to-back No. 1s from the label, who may also own another title in next week's top four: Adele's "21" (on XL Recordings through Columbia).
Wilco's new "The Whole Love," Switchfoot's "Vice Verses," Mastodon's "Hunter" and Chickenfoot's "Chickenfoot III" all may see a top 10 bow next week. If Mastodon makes the top 10, it will mark the first visit to the region for the rock band. They've previously gone as high as No. 11, with 2009's "Crack the Skye."

Those are crazy numbers given none of his singles have been hits. I think his music is awful and he's rather busted to boot, but go 'head, I suppose.
