Love it. Best hair she ever had!
Can this be a sign of her new album? Something more alternative, rocky??? I would love an alternative album of hers.

Have we discussed this yet? Part of me groans because pretty much every other **rebellious!!!!!11** female artist has had this cut by now (including Cassie, Kesha, and 100 other people) but at the same time this is the first time Avril has made a truly drastic cut to her hair if I am remembering correctly. Like, it has typically been long and straight her entire career with just some highlights thrown in sometimes. She sort of looks...sick in the picture or something. She should just go all out and pull a Sinead O'Connor!

The worst thing about that look is that it shows that she has aged.

^ Well, in her defense, she's obviously wasted or high or something in that pic. I'm sure it will look better when she's properly made up.

Not sure if I like the new hair or not. It's a mess the way she wore it in those pictures but it's obviously not styled so jury's out for me.

I don't like the hair when a regular ol' lesbian hipster has it that I pass on the street and don't like it when Avril has it. But, it's kind of refreshing all the same.

She got back to L.A yesterday after being in Paris for awhile. Clearly trying to keep that hair somewhat secret. I have a feeling things are going to get going very soon! @gabrielpanduro
So much to do this week!!! The madness starts tomorrow....

Actualy I guess she is coming for a July release of the single. She is probably doing the photoshoot for the album/single this week and I'm hoping she will tell us something till...the end of month.

With Kelly out, and now Pink coming out in July, I'm getting nervous. So we're going to have Kelly Clarkson, No Doubt, P!nk, Avril Lavigne, Rihanna, and hopefully Ke$ha releasing singles at the same time? Oh. My. God. :'(

With Kelly out, and now Pink coming out in July, I'm getting nervous. There are 10 songs in the top 10. Avril probably won't be #1, but she can be one of those songs. Who was her competition when What The Hell was released? Pretty sure she didn't have that many competing with her, and she still flopped because her single was stale. If her single is great and Epic backs her, I believe she can compete with the best of them. P!nk and Kelly both had their 3rd albums tank. Avril made it to album #4 before that happened, but she was due for hers. Can we stop acting like she needs no competition to succeed? She's had one under-performing album. Have a little faith please?

It peaked at #11 on CHR, #11 on the Hot 100, and was a top 20 hit in Canada (top 10), Australia (top 10), Austria, France, New Zealand (top 5 here), and the UK. I wouldn't call that a flop. But, I get your point. With the right single, she should still get a hit regardless of who else is releasing. The only problem will be getting higher peaks. As we all know "What the Hell" would have been a #1 hit on iTunes here in the US if "Hold It Against Me" wasn't released on the same day.

I feel Avril needs an event single to get back on track and event singles will be hits no matter what. So, it doesn't matter who she is competing against or anything else. I hope they do find that event single to smash though.

It also might of had #1 iTunes potential if it wasn't given away for free on her site for a week before it hit iTunes. Anyways, she's on a new label now who can hopefully handle things better. They see people are over the bratty singles and if they're smart they won't be making the same mistakes this era. With the right single, I don't think the public will be opposed to buying/requesting an Avril Lavigne song. Bigger comebacks have happened from far lower starting points.

Girlfriend comes to mind if we are talking about Avril. She was in a strange spot when Girlfriend came out because musical trends had started to shift, her second album was a success, but didn't have as MUCH success overall as the first cd, etc. It would have been easy for her to release something and be overlooked. However, Girlfriend was absolutely undeniable any time any place. It was meant to get attention and SMASH. I guess maybe event single is not the right term, but I don't think just releasing a great and typically Avril song will necessarily reintroduce her to the world. The trick is not going too novelty with it though which some would argue Girlfriend did.

An average song that was successful, but left nothing for memory. I think of them as disposable singles. We need a song that leaves a memory and makes a mark. You need a video with imagery that will stay with you when you hear the song. I'm With You is her best single for that reason. It wasn't novelty like Girlfriend, and really all-around captured Avril as an artist in that time. That video/song made the Let Go era for a lot of fans. Fuck, it even made Britney Spears want to work with The Matrix when she heard it. She has a new image, she's been laying low for awhile and has an opportunity to reinvent herself and give her fans/the public something iconic. If I log onto Pulse in a couple weeks and see "Avril Lavigne-Candy" in the CHR/Pop section, lets just say I'll be pretty disappointed.

What happened to Ciara's single ? I don't see it's going anywhere. It's too soon to say Ci's new stuff will flop that hard but if it will, i think Avril's new single will come out very soon

Looking at Ciara's new single, i don't think they chose the right one. Hopefully, it's not the real first single because I started to worry about the single choice for Avril

In response to the "event" or "novelty" single, I'd say Girlfriend was perfectly executed. Perfect video, not too bratty, very catchy, first time Avril does choreography in a video, etc. Then, RCA tried to replicate this with What The Hell, but it didn't work. The video is forgettable, the song isn't as catchy, and most importantly, Avril wasn't really into it like she was with Girlfriend.

The only slight problem I have with Girlfriend (I do love it) is that I still see so many comments about how that was the song that turned people off from Avril, that people loved her until that song, that they guessed she wasn't a rock chick anymore (not that Girlfriend is more pop than some of her poppier songs/singles), etc. I still think it was worth releasing it, but I find it interesting that it seemed to have alienated at least part of her core fanbase and I am not sure it retained a newer set of fans long-term. That is the potential drawback of songs like Girlfriend though and I am not saying it was damaging all around for her by any means. I just wish she could get that hit that is like Complicated lol (not seen as a poppy sell-out, but still a HUGE event single).

I think it was the combination of her reinvented image and the subject matter of the song, not the sound of the song that turned some old fans off. I believe that if she dropped Goodbye Lullaby in 2009 (sans WTH & Smile) like originally planned, she would have redeemed a fair amount back. When you release an album that a fair amount of your old fans don't relate to, then don't release anything for four years, that's when you lose your fanbase. I really hope we get a great lead single too. Nothing too brash that only a small percentage will like/buy, but a great undeniable pop song that is hard to dislike ie) Complicated, My Happy Ending, I'm With You.

Every complaint I have heard about it whined about the sound though and how she "sold out and went bubblegum pop"-maybe that is just the people I saw?
I do agree that releasing a cd that doesn't connect (for whatever reason) with some of your fanbase and then waiting four years wasn't the best idea. I guess s**t happens though.
By the way, What The Hell and Don't Tell Me have both grown on me and I ended up liking both better than Girlfriend long-term. I really feel like WHat The Hell would have smashed under slightly different circumstances.

If What The Hell followed Girlfriend in summer 2007, it would have been Top 5 if not #1. Releasing it in 2011 to lead your "introspective divorce album"...what the f**k were they thinking. Did Britney lead off Circus with "My Baby"...? No. You pick a song that represents your sound/direction of the project.

A few of her songs from her last record were great singles, radio played a huge factor in the way that her last album performed as well.

They needed a single that put her name back out there. Unfortunately, that makes "What the Hell" the better option. "Smile" could've been released first as well, but I'm not sure it would've done quite as well as "What the Hell." The label's big problem was not pushing "Smile" and then waiting so long to release the clear smash "Wish You Were Here." Had she have performed "Smile" on something like the Billboard Music Awards or even on American Idol, it would've done much better. Then she could've performed "Wish You Were Here" on the Teen Choice Awards or the VMAs. Such a shame everything went downhill with the record. I even think they could've sent out "Push" after "Wish You Were Here" in my dream schedule above.
