Hypothetical example: What is the bigger hit: The #1 song on February 2 or the #2 song on the 26th of December.? By your logic it would be the February song. But what if everyone and their brother are cashing in on Santa's itunes cards in December and sales of the #1 in February are only abut 1/4 of what they are Christmas week Do you still say the February song is the bigger hit? You can't compare the weeks equally, all weeks are different. That is the reason for the point system Exactly. There are many instances where the #2 song has more points than some other song that hit #1 in another given week. For example Just dance when it sold some 400k and was #2 behind Single Ladies. Even though it was #2 it still had more points than most #1 singles of that year. Or what about when BB changes the rules? For example, when the changed the value of digital sales from 2x airplay to 1X airplay. One week a song with strong digital, low airplay is high, the next it suffers a massive drop. The whole thing was arbitrary, which I guess could be said of a number of BB 'rules.'

Why did they need a huge Clear Channel deal for her second single? IKR? Especially considering her 1st single is already smashing atm.

BB: Her singles "If This Was a Movie" and "Ours" may sell around 150,000 and 130,000, respectively, by week's end on Sunday, Nov. 13, according to industry prognosticators..."Superman" is the third-biggest seller of the bunch, and could shift around 75,000 or more downloads.
-- 2 SWIFT*TAYLOR JUMP THEN FALL 161065 999 0 161065 -- 9 SWIFT*TAYLOR UNTOUCHABLE 113642 999 0 113642
So the T2 songs did about the same total. Really quite impressive considering how these bonus tracks have been so readily available for a year. It implies huge things yet to come when her 4th quarter 2012 album comes out, perhaps vaulting her to #2 most songs charted for a female.

Rihanna tries to break one record She's able to do anything for that That's way she has just one classic song (in my opinion) and that's it "Umbrella" She does fast food music .... music just for the charts (it's not secret that her albums are not selling much enough even if her airplay (many of them payed i think) are really huge) Imagine that Loud had 3 hits peaking about 150mil. audience and other 2 around 60 mil and has sold only 1,5 mil copies (including last christmass period) It's interesting you don't include the 6 million copies of Loud that were sold outside the US. Combine that with Rated R's 3 million sold worldwide, that's nearly 11 million albums sold in the past two years. Yep, her albums aren't selling much at all...

She just isn't a mega seller but really mega sellers are exceptions

Yes, because of changes in chart rules and such through the years (whether it be changes in methodology or points values), that's why it's best to use inverse point systems for ranking tracks. Billboard improved all-time lists even more when it started weighing pre-BDS/-SoundScan-era tracks differently, because it's simply not right to compare hits' runs from before that to ones after.

I would argue that even comparing last week to this week straight up is not completely accurate.
The music market is not a constant and changes from week to week. It is not always true that last weeks #2 is a less popular song than this weeks #1 for example.

Oh, absolutely. It's the same with albums- we've seen No. 2 albums sell more in a week than many No., 1 albums.

That's amazing... Rihanna's second single gets radio support right out of the gate with the aid of a CC deal... and artists like Jessie J and Selena Gomez get miniscule gains.
I like Rihanna, hell, I love WFL, but YDO is crap - this isn't the type of single I would think radio would want to get behind and push like this. This is ridiculous and unworthy of such hoopla.

If Jessie J and Selena's record labels had enough faith in them, they would get the same support. Tough shit.

I cannot fathom believing You Da One isn't something radio would want to get behind but Jessie J and Selena Gomez material is.

Rihanna team is doing absolutely everything to secure another#1. They are such mnipulators, clear channel is the new thing they're doing. I think "You da One" would get to #1 on its own however they want her to replace herself at #1. Most likely after it replaces WFL at #1 it'll fall off and probably return to the summit once it's AirPlay is at its highest What is the big deal about replacing yourself at #1? Yes, it was a big deal when only Elvis and the Beatles had managed to do it for many, many years, but now there are a number of acts who have replaced themselves at #1. It's become much more commonplace.

If radio played Jessie J and Selena Gomez's new singles once an hour people would stop listening. Radio knows that listeners want to hear "Born This Way" and "You Da One" because they're the new singles by the biggest artists in the world. You can waffle on about deals all you want but radio stations aren't going to risk jeopardising their listeners and advertisers. People want to hear these songs, so they get played a lot. The end.

Actually no one has replaced themself at #1 since the Black Eyed Peas from 2 and half years ago.
Also, she'd be the first female lead artist to do it.

People like Gaga and Rihanna just have the label support and connections and cash to get deals like this. It is the way the industry goes.

The hate in hurrr is soooo thick. I just love how Rihanna's success makes everyone so bitter.
LMAO at people saying payola...DUH its the music business. How do you think someone managed to get 400+ updates with their first 5 singles? Its just the way the industry works..its not Rihanna's fault that your fav is too dumb to take advantage of this.
She gon' make all dem girls huh Bitches this era.

Oh, absolutely. It's the same with albums- we've seen No. 2 albums sell more in a week than many No., 1 albums. Definitely. The sales for Cake and Amos Lee's number one albums from earlier this year would barely have gotten them in the top 5 (or ten even) during many other weeks. Didn't NSync's first album sell half a million around Christmas '98 and still stalled at no. 2? I may be thinking of the wrong album, but I believe that was the record for #2.

Carrie Underwood's Some Hearts sold 400k at #4 during Christmas week 2005.

January 6, 2001 (Christmas Week of 2000) 1. 1,258,667 1 Beatles 2. 724,067 BLACK AND BLUE Backstreet Boys 3. 688,339 NOW THAT'S WHAT I CALL MUSIC 5 Various
I beleive that's the record for a #2 (and #3) album (however I'm not sure for a #2 album that never went #1)
---- And for non holiday week, the second week of OIDIA has that one: June 10, 2000 1. 1,760,049 THE MARSHALL MATHERS LP Eminem 2. 612,420 OOPS!...I DID IT AGAIN Britney Spears
