It's just too bad that when Riri sold her soul to the devil for #1s she didn't bother to read the fine print that clearly stated singles only. That's why there are 2 charts one for albums one for singles. By stating she has #1 singles and not #1 albums I already acknowledged there are separate charts. So right back at you. #Fail

Yeah, it's kind of annoying how most of the big releases come in the last 2-3 months of the year and it becomes very over saturated. And then the other 3 quarters have a few big releases scattered here and there. And in between we get #1's from artists that a lot of people haven't even heard of.
It's like, labels don't want to push big releases in slower months because of lower sales, but yet one of the reasons sales are lower in those months because there is fewer big releases.

^ Blackout kinda got "lost"- granted, it was the album put out after her craziness and all, but still. That album eventually will get to 1m, though, even if it's years after its release. It already has. ;) :'( :'( :'( :'(

Personally, with the rate she's been dishing out albums, a 1 million selling album per year is fine by me. Anything more than that is a bonus Something else people seem to be forgetting - Rihanna is selling at least a million albums per year. Adding that to the amount of single sales she tallies per year, along with whatever tracks she's been featured on in that year... seriously, her opening week BB200 peak means fuck all. To those taking digs at her because of that... you are the only people who care. Do you really think her label does when she's that consistent a seller? It all adds up; album, singles, tour, promo deals, features, exposure - she's incredibly bankable.

It was released DURING her craziness and I believe in the summer it was at 998,000 in July/August (up 7,000 from 2010). Should be at 1M by now.

The thing is...after The Fame, and Come On Over, and Taylor Swift, and Breakaway, and Some Hearts... they scored #1 albums. ;) and big first week sales. TTT's numbers are miserable for a 6th album of someone with all them number one singles.

I can't agree that anyone selling at or around 200K in a week in this era is selling "miserably."
My suspicion is that these are a lot of people who buy singles from Rihanna, but don't automatically buy her albums. Once she pumps out enough singles from a given album, she gets more of them to buy the album. It may not be the most typical way of getting a platinum album, but it seems to work for her. Katy Perry seems to be pretty similar---doom and gloom her first week, after she sells well but not spectacularly, but you turn around several singles later, and she's sold well.

Katy & Rihanna are similar in that they need hits to sell albums. Time can only tell if they will be able to sell well on name alone one day.

How many platinum albums from female artists have we had in the last few years with a lack of single success?

Maybe on the Hot 100, but that is not the only chart that supports album sales. Hot R&B/HipHop SongsBest Thing I Never Had - #4 Party - #2 Alicia Keys - The Element of Freedom Hot R&B/HipHop SongsTry Sleeping With A Broken Heart - #2 Unthinkable - #1 (12 Weeks) Susan Boyle is one definitely.

You can't be implying that the Hot 100 or CHR charts are the only audiences that can notably generate sales for an album? Look at all the urban and country acts doing phenomenally with limited to no Hot 100 success.

Yes you did.
Alicia and Beyonce have had singles success on the R&B charts with TEOF and 4.

I didn't intentionally imply that. If you inferred that from my posts, then fine. But don't tell me my intent.

When people say 4's singles were flops, Beyonce fans bring up that they smashed on Urban, but then everyone forgets that when talking about album sales... This isn't directed at Guy, just Beyonce fans in general.

Sade's "Soldier of Love" Whitney Houston's "I Look To You" Jackie Evancho "O Holy Night" To a lesser extent "Reba: Duets" (though Because of You peaked at #2 on Hot Country Songs).
Generally speaking, I feel the female artists who go platinum without a hit in this day and age are either legendary artists or holiday-specific artists (I kinda classify Susan Boyle as a holiday artist even if she's more classical bc of her release schedule).

I agree that I wouldn't consider "The Element Of Freedom" an example for an album that sold without single success given the immense success of "Unthinkable" on Alicia's core format added to the mainstream success of "Empire State Of Mind" which, despite the original not being on the album, I think it's pretty indisputable that it added a lot to her sales that era since her profile was way up at the time because of that track. She had 2 solid hits under her belt so I won't argue there.
However, the difference with that era from "4" is that Beyonce has always been a far more mainstream artist than Alicia has. Yes Beyonce's sound has always been more R&B leaning than pop but she has still always crossed over and her appeal is aimed at pop audiences just as much especially after the IASF era. Needless to say, obviously "4" wasn't going to go over well on the pop charts but whatever.
IMO, even though both albums are strictly R&B, Beyonce going platinum with "4" speaks louder volumes to me than Alicia doing it because that's Alicia's entire fanbase. The ones buying Bey now are just more like her core...let her release another "Sweet Dreams" and her sales would be higher.

If Beyonce or Alicia Keys had the single success of Katy or Rihanna's last albums, their sales would be AT THE VERY LEAST a million higher. There's the difference.
Also, nighttime, the term "lack of single success" is really wide open for interpretation. "Lack" could mean COMPLETELY without or just lacking.
It is also statistically backed up that the Urban genre does not sell records on par with country or pop anymore.

I agree but the "at least a million higher" thing is kinda just stray talk since it can't be proven. *shrugs* I just think this whole argument is pointless and I don't think Beyonce or Alicia had to be brought up. It just fuels a mess.
Bottom line is that every artist has their appeal. Alicia and Beyonce will simply never have the same single success as them and that's okay because they don't need that. They're audience is different than Katy or Rihanna's who are in a genre that is onto the next poptart quickly hence why they need to have a lot of big pop singles and that's okay for them. Alicia and Beyonce's fans are more loyal overall but I don't really agree in using Katy or Rihanna's big singles as a way to discredit them (unless their albums were actually bombing ala Jay Sean, Derulo, etc).

I don't even know what the "argument" is or how we even got to this point.
Rihanna is opening with her regular numbers. Should be expected.

Lol well not "argument"...more like ~argument. I guess it's to be expected though. I mean, when Gaga and Bey debuted there were like dozens of pages of hot steaming mess so it's only fair Rihanna gets some too. I think I'm just tired of seeing this same pattern for all of the major divas of Pulse.

HITS initially posted a very early "Weakend" preview on Tuesday, and then posted another update on Wednesday. The Weakend preview usually comes Thursday, but because of the holiday, it didn't post one at that time.

It is also statistically backed up that the Urban genre does not sell records on par with country or pop anymore. It's not like pop sells that much anymore... I can barely think of any recent ones to cross 2 million.
