I can't agree that anyone selling at or around 200K in a week in this era is selling "miserably." My suspicion is that these are a lot of people who buy singles from Rihanna, but don't automatically buy her albums. Once she pumps out enough singles from a given album, she gets more of them to buy the album. It may not be the most typical way of getting a platinum album, but it seems to work for her. Katy Perry seems to be pretty similar---doom and gloom her first week, after she sells well but not spectacularly, but you turn around several singles later, and she's sold well. it's just that "well" but not good enough for the amount of airplay / success they've had. they both just had 5+ no1s and their albums couldn't even scan 2 mill. when fergie (the dutchess), gaga (TF[m]) & Bep (The END) had an era to similar to what they just had their albums all went multi plat. I wonder what was the difference with Fergie that she sold that much. I wasn't even aware at the time of the album sales. She has hits like everyone, but what made her bigger? her BEP status?

Are you referring to first week sales or total sales? Because Fergie's The Dutchess only logged 150k its first week and never went to number one, even with record-breaking digital sales at the time. So in terms of first week sales, there isn't much of a disparity. If you mean long-term sales, the album was promoted from summer of 2006 to spring of 2008, during which it had racked up about 2.7 million in total sales. If we look at the past 2 years (the equivalent that promotions existed for Dutchess), Rihanna has sold about 2.6 million between Rated R and Loud. So there isn't much of a disparity between long -term sales either. Now, perhaps it isn't fair to compare the sales of one album (The Dutchess) with the sales of two news sets (Rated R & Loud) combined, but it also isn't fair to compare an album's (Loud) sales to those of an album (Dutchess) that had more than double the promotional period. I'll admit that TF & The END were monsters though.

The album sold millions worldwide after this single.

The time argument in that post is kinda irrelevant. Both Fergie and Rihanna had the same number of singles. Fergie's just had more longevity.

LMFAO are really starting to sell albums steadily.
I'm surprised by that, even while I'm aware they have two massive hits to boot now. I thought they'd just emerge a hot digital single duo, but fail to translate on the record side of the equation due to their perceived novelty-status as an artist, like Pitbull.
Perhaps they may want to re-consider releasing their third album early next year, and push it back to the third or fourth quarter.

Lisping, Pitbull could be a better album seller, but he releases his singles way too early before his album release, and that's called bad timing. Hey baby was released one year before the album, and give me everything, was peaking when he released the album back in July. what if hey baby would have been released 3 months before the album and then he would have released in september 'give me everything"? Of course his sales would have been better. I think you underrate pitbull too much. Remember that he already showed potential with album sales, his debut album went gold, without promo, without twitter or youtube. But he was lucky enough to have a moderate hit because he released his single close to the date his debut album was released. However, i think international love is helping his album, it was out of the top 200 and now it's back to the top 100 on itunes, so Pitbull is selling more than you think call him an underdog, but he has consistency. :) Changing the topic, congrats to LMFAO, the first time I bought one of their singles was "lala on top of the world"(so catchy)I'm glad I supported them before their success. I think this is their moment! :)

Will this be LMFAO's biggest sales week?
EDIT: I'm assuming that they're opening week of 27k was their best selling.

Fergie's era lasted longer ..because her hits had legs. nobody's asking rihanna to rush release a new album within every 12 months. even during her good girl gone bad era she didn't scan what the Dutchess did. plus the dutches didn't take 2 years to scan this .. the amount after 2 years was well over 3.5 mill.

LMFAO and Pitbull have totally different appeals and are incomparable. LMFAO have crazy and rambunctious personalities which certainly stand out from the rest of the crowd. Their music perfectly matches who they are and I think that is the appeal that is garnering them higher album sales and a larger fanbase.

Fergie's album is a good example of what having a diverse set of singles can do for you. I feel like if every song was a fast dance BEP type song she wouldn't have sold as much, but she had that which brought in a certain crowd, Glamorous which appealed to a slightly different one, Big Girls Don't Cry which was obviously an absolutely masssssssive hit that appealed to many different groups, and then even Clumsy which had a slightly different sound and appealed to (I found) a lot of adults actually. The era is underrated, but I honestly find it one of the most diverse and effective single release schedules from a single album from recent female pop stars. I wish she would make another cd just to see if she can recreate that magic.
Excited to see the Hits results for tomorrow. The numbers look a little skewed right now, obviously.

I wish she would make another cd just to see if she can recreate that magic. Yassss. Very underrated era and album. All the the singles were eclectic but still very appealing to the masses in a non-contrived way. I'm still kinda peeved "All I Got" was never released and was chugged in favor of the bland "Finally". Shouldn't really be surprising that "The Dutchess" performed better than GGGB to be honest though. I mean, GGGB had a lot of hits too but they sort of dropped the ball following Umbrella with singles like SUAD and HTILY which, while modest charters, sort of dampened the hype of the era a bit early on and it wasn't til 2008 that it actually started taking off when DSTM came out and they did the re-release to capitalize on things. Again, the bottom line is that everyone sells differently. Artist A can have 5 hit singles and sell better than Artist B who has 6 hit singles. And Pitbull just needs to start showing his bulge more. He got a lot of attention for it at the AMAs, probably the most he's ever seen by the media.

I wish she would make another cd just to see if she can recreate that magic. You make an excellent point...I don't like that this has veered off into talks about a 2006 album but since it is brought up, I never thought about it like that. London bridge was a gimmicky summer song that served its purpose for fairweather fans. Note: Does anybody else find it weird that Pedestal actually uses the london bridge is falling sample instead of the song London bridge Fergalicious just was the ultimate party track...undeniable. Still mad that it was blocked by Irreplaceable. I could deal with 9 weeks at #1 for that song and 1 for Fergalicious but oh well Glamorous appealed to a more urban crowd Big girls don't cry...is more adult contemporary and really made me respect her as more of an artist. Clumsy...I think it appeals to a more adult crowd because of the sample. It is from a popular r&b song of yesteryear. That said, man if she would have kept it going she really could be a solo force. But, BEP's last 2 albums were necessary to seal their fate in the music biz. Sis, you ain't neva lie. LOL. But seriously, as much as I love Shut up and drive it should have been released later. This is how I see it... Summer 1st single Umbrella Fall 2nd single Don't stop... pop/rhy Hate that I love you urban rhy Winter 3rd single take a bow Spring 4th single Shut up n drive pop/rhy n sell me candy rhy/urban Summer 5th single disturbia Rehab is good but forgettable 6th single Fall closer Good girl one bad To capitalize on the "incident' Breakin dishes which Billboard reported as the 9th single but her team chose not to...good decision, I guess Perfection personified :'( :'( :'( I think they won't be able to achieve too much of diversity for TTT like Fergies album but the obvious front runner's where have you been, roc me out, TTT , and drunk on love...watch n learn (crosses fingers) will achieve some diversity but will fit the same overall theme of this album.

The Dutchess and Gwen Stefani's L.A.M.B. are quite similar, both spawned diverse singles.

Yeah, if she had did the Loud type promo again, #1 might have very well been hers. Oh well...nobody's fault but Def Jam's for insisting on releasing a new album while she is on tour.

Speaking of the GGGB era, I think her label was afraid to take a chance on DSTM at first because the dance-y sound hadn't fully taken root yet, so they went with the safer HTILY after SU&D underperformed expectations.

Buble might be # 1 on soundscan tomorrow since he's just 7k away from Nickelback on Hits' chart...but his sales were really overestimated .

Yes, I thought she was gonna lose #1 by a wider margin than this. I wonder how Buble will fare next week and if it would have been best for IDJ to release on Nov 28 instead as I suspected. Nevertheless, this is pretty much mirroring her last era with peak and sales she's off to a good start.
