I thought Rihanna would sell a little more, but those numbers aren't catastrophic for her. She's never been a huge first week seller and consistency > first-week sales. There are lots of hits on the album, it'll at least go platinum, and probably close to 2x platinum like Loud, plus she always has huge worldwide numbers because of how big she is in Europe. Her worldwide numbers are bigger than a lot of other pop singers. The album will be fine!

#oop. Was trying to optimistic for Rih in thinking it was fake but... My original prediction of her doing less than "Loud" because of weak promo/quick release is right on the money then. I'm still really surprised at how low the sales for everyone in general are though, Nickelback and Mary J Blige I expected better from too. Someone mentioned oversaturation. W/all these major releases, it makes sense, but for someone w/hype & a #1 hit, these projections are awfully low, oversaturation or not. & you release during Black Friday week too?!?! CH... Rihanna's competition would include Michael Jackson, Taylor Swift and Mary J Blige and perhaps even Lady Gaga less competition in this week then perhaps Rihanna and her #1 hit draws 300K

I think the #1 spot can be a massively overrated stat so to speak. It's a marathon not a sprint.

I'm happy MJB is bombing because that album is terrible. She needs to re-evaluate who she is as an artist. She fell off REALLY bad after GP.

You never know - Buble could get past 300k by the end of the week.

Mary J. Blige's "overcoming her demons" from 20 years ago story is tired. That's been the main selling point for this album & it makes sense as to why people would be tired of that crap. However, those numbers are just BAD for her. I expected Nickelback to do 300k... As much as I don't particularly care for them, hopefully they trend up to that total. Rihanna I'm excited to see Michael Buble's #'s & I'm shocked at the potentially big drop for Drake though.

The drop for Drake would be around 65%, which is normal in any other week. I hope they all trend upward.

These all are extremely low. Even Drake doesn't appear to be getting the cushioned second week sales' drop that's expected with Thanksgiving week. When was the last Thanksgiving week where the top selling album didn't at least break 250k?Becuase I'm that bored today.. All Thanksgiving #1's of the SoundScan era: 2010: Kanye West- My Beautiful Dark..: 496k 2009: Susan Boyle- I Dreamed a Dream: 701k 2008: Kanye West- 808's & Heartbreak: 450k 2007: Josh Groban- Noel: 405k 2006: Jay-Z- Kingdom Come: 680k 2005: System of a Down- Hypnotize: 320k 2004: U2- How to Dismantle..: 840k 2003: Jay-Z- The Black Album: 206k (in its 3rd week of release though; Brintey sold 609k the previous week) 2002: Shania Twain- Up: 626k 2001: Creed- Weathered: 887k 2000: Backstreet Boys- Back and Blue: 1.59 mil 1999: Celine Dion- All the Way..: 394k 1998: Garth Brooks- Double Live: 694k (after debuting with 1 mil+ the previous week) 1997: Garth Brooks- Sevens: 897k 1996: Bush- Razorblade Suitcase: 200k 1995: The Beatles- Antholgy 1: 855k 1994: Kenny G- Miracles: 241k 1993: Snoop Dogg- Doggystyle: 803k 1992: The Bodyguard OST: 290k 1991: Michael Jackson- Dangerous: 326k ------------------------------------------------------------- It's only dipped below 250k three times: 2003, 1996 and 1994 From looking back, Thanksgiving week is really inconsistent for #1's year to year.

Underwhelming numbers overall for a Thanksgiving week. Looks like with the addition of Buble, Drake, Bieber and Adele, only the top 9 will sell 100k+.

Mary J. Flop. Her last album debuted with double that (332,000) and was only certified gold. On the bright side at least Ciara and Keri will have some company this time around.
Underwhelmed by Rihanna, figured she'd at the very least surpass her last albums first week sales based on the #1's shes nabbed since then. Will be interesting to see how this album performs in the long haul, I wouldn't be surprised if it sold less than "Rated R".
As long as someone denies Nickeltrash that #1 I'll be content.

I was to say you forgot Bieber Who knows? There might be another surprise 100k+. It can go either way. Taylor may somehow get to 100k though I somehow doubt it. Then again, Big Time Rush might not make it and we'll then end up with only a 100K+ top 8.

Thanks! I hope it trends upwards by the end of the week and hopefully she'll surpass Loud's sales. But she has the greatest advantage at sales longevity than the other debuting artists, and while I would like to have seen higher sales predictions, I, nor Rihanna, nor Def Jam are too worried.

Taylor Swift may actually do 100k too. Not a big fan of hers but I do want the entire top 10 to be over 100k.

I don't understand why Rihanna can't sell albums!! Most people will say she is the epitome of a 'singles artist' but I was hoping she could sell over 200k. Maybe she does need a break after this...too early to tell.

So I purchased Rihanna's album & Mr. Buble's album from Amazon last Friday. Do both count for this week, or did Michael's count for last week, even though both weren't shipped until yesterday?

Was hoping Rihanna would crack 250k, but I knew #1 would be tough. Ah, well there's always January. Hopefully she has some SNL promo lined up like Nicki did last January.

Not entirely shocked at the numbers. I expected Rihanna to crack 200k, but nothing substantially more or less than Loud. Nickleback hasn't really registered on the pop culture radar but I expected their fan base to keep them in the 250-300 realm. Daughtry may have opened huge last time, but the last album didn't do much aside from the first single, and their current single isn't doing anything.
I suspect they will all go up by about 15-20k though when the actual numbers are in.

Rihanna's album isn't selling due to the price as well as the length of the project. Perhaps some consumers don't see it worth their money compared to past projects?

It also was Nicki's first album, and the newness "hype" helped sustain it. Not saying that an album that didn't hit No. 1 cannot come January, but I think newer acts may benefit from that more these days.
Price? The regular edition of RiRi's album is $9.99 at Amazon.com and iTunes, $12.99 and $13.99 for the deluxe, respectively.
