Oh thanks Hillary and Kim I can kind of understand but Meg shouldn't be on there at all.

Who did you think would/should be #1? Mariah or Whitney.

Oh thanks Hillary and Kim I can kind of understand but Meg shouldn't be on there at all. Why Not? Probably because she's the only artist on the list who doesn't really sing (probably other than backing vocals) on the list (at least the WS singles I've heard). EDIT: forgot Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth. Again probably backing vocals as I hear Thurston Moore far more on the SY singles.

People are complaining about the ranking....it was compiled by people voting on VH1.com, not VH1 arbitrarily deciding.

If this was limited to 25 women AND voted by a panel of industry peers then it would seem a bit more credible.

Yep No way Mariah, Madonna, and Beyonce would have been able to place higher than Lady GaGa/Taylor if it was pure fan vote...those stan.s vote like crazy. I love the list of course. Perfect top 3....could care less about the rest(although I'm glad Katy made the top 20 ) Although Destiny's Child is too low...but at least Bey makes the chart twice :'( :'(

But this is The Greatest Women In Music, as in all of Music not just singing. Still I really shouldn't get all worked up over the list that has Jordin Sparks and Miley Cyrus in it

This list is pretty embarrassing. Artists 3-4 years into their career Shouldn't be in top 5 let alone top 40.
And then there's Fantasia...
Celine Dion isn't even top 20. And Rihanna is somehow below Katy. WTF. So much wrong with this list but I'm not about to sit here and write an essay about it.

I think both Expose and Taylor Dayne should both be on this list considering they had some Huge hits from 1990. I mean low end of the chart but still should be on there over some of these acts.

33. Norah Jones 32. Fantasia
Amazing
(Norah's new album is going to smash. She has huge buzz around her and it's produced by Danger Mouse).

This wasn't fan-voted. The voting stuff on the website was not what determined the rankings- thought that was explained already.
It's from 1990, so the greats who were on the last list, they weren't expected to be on it. As I was watching last night, I saw they had a segment of women "too great to be ranked"- and those were the "old-timers"- started with country women like Patsy Cline, Dolly Parton, Loretta Lynn.
It's obviously not based on critical success- hence, for instance, PJ Harvey and Bjork's relatively low placements. Since Madonna usually fares well in these kinds of things (not just VH1, obviously), her ranking is hardly surprising.
As for the critically challenged ladies like Jennifer Lopez... VH1 had her top 20 on the Pop Culture Icons list, so...
It's VH1, remember- it was expected that on this new list, there would be focus on commercial success, the latest hot things. The first list from 1999 was nowhere near as focused on that.

IMO: Too high. I like a lot of these, but just don't think they've earned these placements (* or earned these placements yet). are you freaking kidding me? How is she too high? If you don't like her music or her as an artist that's fine but to discredit her? That's crazy.. She is the most successful R&B artist in the last 25 years(according to Billboard). She just released her 10th studio album.. She has 9 platinum and 3 gold albums (so far to date). With 20 years in the business and still selling albums. She's one of the most influential singers to date. Who else has worked with Andrea Bocelli (sp) to Jay Z? I'm sure she's influenced your fave in some way.. She should be where Adele is on this list.

And seeing how Ne-Yo knew the positions of the women during his hosting, it's safe to say that this list was determined well before Whitney's death. Al though there's no proper narrator again this time.

LOL @ Adele and Gaga in the top 5 over three of the main divas that ruled the 90s. The top 5 should have been the 5 divas and then Mary and Beyoncé. Also I can't at Madonna being #1 in a 1990-present list.

^I probably agree- it should be Bjork or PJ Harvey, Madonna at No. 2 or 3. :)
I know this new list has different intentions, but the 1999 list was much better.

IMO: 98. Ashanti 57. Ke$ha 40. Nicki Minaj 34. Queen Latifah 24. Jennifer Hudson* 23. Carrie Underwood 17. Katy Perry 16. Jennifer Lopez 09. Mary J. Blige 08. Christina Aguilera 05. Adele* 04. Lady Gaga* Too high. I like a lot of these, but just don't think they've earned these placements (* or earned these placements yet). 93. Feist 90. Regina Spektor 87. Robyn 60. Florence + The Machine 55. Fiona Apple 52. En Vogue 50. Lauryn Hill 30. Sade 26. Amy Winehouse 22. Annie Lennox 12. TLC* 11. Britney Spears* 06. Whitney Houston* Too low. *Though in these cases, not by too much. To be clear, each of these too high/too low are taken individually in the contexts of the original list. For example, with this list, I think Britney's #11 is too low, but in an alternative list, I wouldn't have beef with her missing the top ten. So wait you think Britney at #11 is too low but Mary J. Blige at #9 is too high? It doesn't make sense. Mary is a legend, she's earned every bit of respect she gets, her music has helped people get through their struggles. What has Britney done to deserve that #11 place in your opinion?

Those 2 ladies have no influence whatsoever on popular music and honestly I couldn't care less about critics raving on their work. Mariah Carey should have been #1 especially for the period this list covers. The impact she had on the 90s with her music, her success and her voice was huge and has lasted through the 2000s with her massive comeback.

What has Britney done to deserve that #11 place in your opinion? Well, she's outsold everyone infront of her other than Whitney, Madonna and Mariah, had tons of iconic performances, helped shape teen pop during the late 90's, and helped start the current dance trend. She should be higher than at least a few of the people infront of her...

That's your opinion, Supa- so you're free to come up with your own list. When I think of "greatest," it should be about greatest ARTIST- and those ladies certainly are among the best since 1990. But, it's a VH1 list, so. Many of the big names would not be ranked as high as they are if that indeed was what the list was about- the rankings for some relative newbies supports that it's really not about the "greatest."

To say Bjork has had no influence whatsoever on popular music is just wrong. How has her music affected popular music? I never see her cited as an influence by anyone, but please tell me if I'm wrong. HG, it's clear that is my opinion but I can't see how greatest = critical acclaim. Critics have opinions as well, that doesn't mean they are the only ones who can determine who has had an impact and who hasn't.
