This week we had a lot of new releases, similar to last week. Coheed and Cambria and Soccer Mommy are probably the most notable releases, while we also had comebacks from Alexisonfire, Porcupine Tree and Regina Spektor. MUNA have released their first LP with Phoebe Bridgers' label, Saddest Factory. Day Wave has also released an LP; you may know him through his work with artists such as KennyHoopla and Pete Yorn.

hey guys check your Rock n Roll i.q. with this 40 song music quiz. Honestly I missed six. two towards the beginning, one in the middle and one at the end. The other two were a bit embarrasing, but I couldn't recall the title of the song. BTW I only missed one of the songs I actually hate so yes I missed some that I should know.

I apologize for being super late to the party on this post, but as I've been obsessed with the station again for the past year or so, I have a lot of thoughts since the fantastic XYZ. Classic alternative is fantastic, but I noticed the deemphasizing right away and was a bit sad by that since I grew up with pretty much the history of early alternative music 91X spun from time to time, listening to resurrection sundays, and listened to 94.9 when Halloran and Garett were making the station fantastic back in the 00s, while enjoying a lot of the current music I grew up with in the 00s and 10s. So I always felt a bit confused on why it was so samey every day for 4 months at the similar times with barely any shakeups if you can implement some deep cuts from the 80s like you do on resurrections that a lot of the audience of Gen X'ers would really love seeing when I bring it up on Facebook, and not just play the same 20-30 songs, it goes against the anti-corporate message they were going for. I do love tracking it via Tunegenie a lot and listen in everyday when I don't feel like spotifying other tunes and I have no busy life at the moment. I think I count 400 songs that are shuffled constantly at the moment, I'd have to graph it though. A lot of the same grunge and new wave though with a few 00s/10s songs. Good news however is it seems like my comments and requesting I sent to Hilary (I've had a fun talk with her recently), and I've been hearing some 10s stuff I like pop up again, and her sets on the weekday afternoons are usually fun as some songs that never get played appear in the beginning of a set. The other con is FTW: New Music show got taken away in May, and Tim Pyles quit apparently, Garett tweeted in this thread though that they're going to return a similar show with "IMHO, a better curation", which sounds interesting but I thought Tim Pyles did a good job with song choices (I don't think Garett meant it in that way but still) www.sandiegoreader.com/news/2022/jun/24/dj-tim-pyles-quits-91x-fm-again/Loudspeaker still exists too, I was honestly worried the new music and local stuff would be demphasized or go away entirely. Other pros I have is the new music choices have been fantastic this year. So far there's been about 80 songs this year that have been played (they do new music every hour now, I wish it were 30 minutes like it is at midnight, would help the sets be more varied), and a lot of it are good (Fontaines DC, IDLES, Japanese Breakfast, Soccer Mommy...) and this 4th of July event is easily the best thing they're doing this year so far. Hearing all the top 20 songs of every year since 1983 is stuff I wish would be more common on their playlist every day tbh. It's the variety message I wish they'd stick by instead of just saying "hey, we're Sunny 98.1 now". So I've always been a bit mixed on this direction but the past month has been better than the last few I think. Hoping it turns around eventually. Need my favorite station to give love to everything in their history a bit, while nodding towards new leftfield and alternative music. Even with the mixed feelings I have now, they're still miles above Audacy lmao, I hate Audacy so much.

Every Independence Day weekend, The Current (AAA station in Minneapolis) plays the best selections of their catalog in alphabetical order. This year is no different. A total of 1,355 songs were featured this year. You can view the songs (retrieved from their playlist) here. Artists with the most songs: 11: Lizzo 9: Brandi Carlile, CHVRCHES, David Bowie, Prince 8: St. Vincent, The Beatles 7: Billie Eilish, Florence and the Machine, Leon Bridges 6: Bon Iver, Glass Animals, HAIM, Lana Del Rey, Maggie Rogers, Margo Price, Michael Kiwanuka, Mitski, Sylvan Esso, Weezer 5: Arcade Fire, beabadoobee, Beck, Bob Dylan, Courtney Barnett, Death Cab for Cutie, Fiona Apple, Jade Bird, Lorde, Phantogram, Phoebe Bridgers, Radiohead, Regina Spektor, Sharon Van Etten, Sleater-Kinney, Spoon, Stevie Wonder, The Black Keys, The Head and the Heart, The War On Drugs, U2, Yeah Yeah Yeahs Note: I separated collaborations if the artist didn't collaborate under a name, so entries such as Better Oblivion Community Center and Silk Sonic do not contribute towards the tallies for the artists involved. I also combined entries with the solo musician if the band name starts with said musician.

Anyone else get down when a new song leaves rotation? I miss hearing Ride or Die, Jackie Down the Line and Toni for example. I'd think it'd be cool if they kept tracks reran as recents and not new music to vary out the playlists since it gets tiring hearing the same classics. 91X used to do so a bit. :/

What happens when you go classic alt but don't do anything interesting outside of Sundays and events: It's weird how you got Garett as PD (who was behind the legendary 94.9 days with Halloran in the 00s), you got so much freedom to just open your vaults anyday, but you just stay conservative as Stray Cat Strut plays again for the 15th time that week. It's so bizarre and frustrating as a megafan of the station, man. Hilary is a good music director too who has years of history with the station so like. Are they just letting some 80s people who got mad Declan Mckenna and Twenty One Pilots (this was a real facebook commentor who said this lol), get to them so they just satisfy playing the same 500 80s songs or? 94.9 went up from 1.9 past couple of months from 2.6 and now it's 2.4. ratings.radio-online.com/content/arb063

Didn't know where to mention this or make a topic for this as I'm still new here, but I witnessed a radio war around 10:30 to Midnight. There was not only Red Hot Chili Peppers performing in concert tonight in San Diego, but a Lumineers concert too. 91X played nothing but Red Hot Chili Peppers songs for an hour and a half, and 94.9 played both Red Hot Chili Peppers and Lumineers for an hour.
Here's what was played on both stations, I feel 91X won as much as I miss Lumineers since they're a guilty pleasure band of mine. (Ophelia got played at 2PM today though)
91X: True Men Don't Kill Coyotes, Suck My Kiss, By the Way, Higher Ground, Give It Away, Can't Stop, Knock Me Down, Blood Sugar Sex Magik, Black Summer, Fire, Breaking the Girl, Fight Like a Brave, Aeroplane, Taste the Pain, Soul to Squeeze, Love Rollercoaster
94.9: Red Hot Chili Peppers: Higher Ground, Scar Tissue, Can't Stop, Dani California, Breaking the Girl, Black Summer, Around the World
Lumineers: Cleopatra, Ho Hey, Where We Are, Stubborn Love, Brightside, Just Like Heaven, Angela, Ho Hey (again)
That was fun. I'm so glad I had a feeling tonight to tune into radio since sometimes 91X will play some random song they never play late at night and I felt that was going to happen tonight. Have you ever experienced a radio war before?

A whole episode of the Professor of Rock dedicated to my favorite band and favorite song of all time. He takes it apart piece by piece and rebuilds it like a perfect 70's Muscle Machine.

After hearing 24 Clash songs sprinkled on this week's Ressurection Sunday, I have concluded that I'm not only that much of a Clash fan, but am drained of them.
This classic alt direction really could be so much more outside of Ressurection which delivers mostly (This week was Garett reminiscing of a 40 year anniversary of a concert he went to so I understand about this week, this was my attempt at trying to see if the Clash songs I heard will grow on me since I've been getting into some 80's bands even if they repeat a lot of the hits outside of this block). All I can do at the moment is just try to aim for that 00s-present songs I miss hearing since I'm in the car a lot and Spotifying with lack of money to get songs my mom and I want to hear with the ads popping up more like crazy is tiring. It sucks being a bit of an old school zoomer fanatic of radio in this age. I still love 91X but been a bit bored again, and 94.9 won't do anything interesting ever.
At least Lost in Yesterday appeared out of nowhere the other night?

And while they're all fine songs that get played, it's ones they've played to death before the change, or the old ones from the 80s-90s they DID revive after it, have been overplayed to death. Hilary's midday sets will have some unique songs or requests (Against Me returned out of nowhere last week, that was nice) but the rest of the sets are the same grunge or 80s hits which makes it boring if you're a constant listener or tuning in daily for an hour because at some point you'll hear the same stuff that way. It's such an easy fix from a station I know was better than this that it's hard not to get frustrated. There's still about a thousand songs from XYZ that I feel should be a part of the regular rotation or thousands of stuff since 83 to now they should just insert now and then that would interest listeners (I've confirmed a lot of listeners on resurrection would love hearing this stuff outside of resurrection sundays for example). There's so many ways you can have a healthy balance of old and new songs and popular and leftfield without sacrificing one or the other. The new music choices and the surprise requests are the only things I like at the moment. And its sadly so true what you said. Still defeats a lot of stations here in San Diego but it sucks how much more they can do right now. It's hard for me not to shut up about it. XP Being a radio nerd this day and age is a bit of a task haha. Alright sorry for the 91X talk here guys. I'll quiet now. XP

I feel sorry for day shift listeners. You know 91x plays the best stuff in the wee hours of the night when only I'm listening. I hear Adam Ant, Third Eye Blind, Duran Duran, Cars Blondie, Panic! At The Disco, Oingo Boingo, Real life, Devo. no Nirvana. Normally they play a Nirvana album filler every hour. Seems the dayshift listeners get all the played to death bands and songss while us Night owls get the more "I haven't heard that on the radio for years" songs which I personally prefer. My advise. Tape the nighshift show and listen to it during the day. ;)

Tape the nighshift show and listen to it during the day. Oh I know what you mean. I did listen to ALL hours at some point in the past 6 months together due to bad sleeping habits so I have caught some interesting stuff played, but usually every song I've noticed have gotten it's fair share during the day too, and the Nirvana repeats have continued a bit at night, just a bit less compared to the day time. I also love that from 12-5AM they will play new music every 30 minutes instead of an hour like during the day time, sometimes even dropping new music the first time to rotate later during random times at those times. (I've seen Japanese Breakfast's Be Sweet debut like that). As well as Mxpx's I'm ok, You're ok only appearing late at night for some reason twice. Once in a while during the weekends when it's automatic a song or two can appear that's never played anymore. I've seen Block Rockin Beats by The Chemical Brothers return once then never again, as well as Party at Ground Zero by Fishbone (one time at 1pm and another at 9pm). This past weekend nothing interesting happened though, but yeah I love it when it does. For example, in June, there was a couple weeks where they dropped random 00's-10's songs (usually late at night) that returned only once or twice that I miss hearing. I did do an example but I did miss I'm not Okay by MCR and Bury Me with It by Modest Mouse. All the songs played since have not appeared again. I'm guessing it might've been a teaser to Top 20 Weekend but if I remember correctly some of these weren't even in the top 20s of their respective years. I did see a random return of Love it If we Made it from Hilary a couple weeks back but that might've been because they were giving away 1975 tickets soon. Lost in Yesterday returned a few days ago. I'm hoping something interesting happens again at night soon. That's fun to see listening or checking the tunegenie page. Hilary can be interesting though from 10-3pm. She's the request taker as well as just dropping some songs once in a while for the beginning of the set, as well as debut new singles. No Reason Why by Pennywise got played yesterday since it was a listener's birthday, it was cool. Tunegenie: xetra.tunegenie.com By the way, did you happen to catch the Red Hot Chili Peppers marathon they did during the night of the concert (July 27th), that was fun. Lots of deeper cuts they never play ever (Knock Me Down, Fire, Fight Like a Brave, True Men Don't Kill Coyotes), plus the return of Black Summer (which while I don't love it, it's something they just retired a couple weeks in)

If they're only playing one new song an hour, they're essentially a "classic hits" station that plays alternative leaning classics. I'm not familiar with 91X (since I'm three time zones away in Atlanta), but my general frustration with classic hits style stations is despite having potentially thousands of songs to build out interesting playlists, they often rely on the same list of 300-400 songs, which in a one week period means a TON of repetition.
The theme weekends/programs you talk about are intriguing, and one of the things I miss most from Atlanta having a strong alternative station (ours was called 99X). In it's heyday, they had everything from a weekly locals only show (which to the station's credit, they still do on Sunday nights) to a Friday afternoon "Velveeta Cheese Lounge" playing the (even) weirder side of alt.
99X technically still exists in Atlanta, but it's on a tiny signal (144 watts) or online only. Decent playlist, for a Cumulous-owned station, though. I imagine they're running a minimal budget.

Decent playlist, for a Cumulous-owned station, though. I imagine they're running a minimal budget. First off, sucks to hear about 99X. :( It's always a shame when a big city had a classic alt station that went under over the years (LA, San Francisco, New York). Secondly, yeah, that is the direction it is right now sadly, the marketing made it seem liked they'd dig into sharing old and new discoveries (the new music is at least that), as well as variety left and right. And sure, for the casual hour listener maybe that's the case at first glance, the rotated playlist is about 1,000 songs, but most of them are ones that commonly get rotated for 5 songs of the 7 songs (they usually have a set of 7 songs, the one after the break is the more obscure song they don't play as much or a request of one they never play anymore, 2 classic alt hits, 1 new song, 3 classic alt hits), and since most of the 2000's/10's songs are ditched, as well as many 80s/90s songs that are either semi-obscure or popular but never get played, get ignored. I've actually been wanting to make a joke playlist on Spotify of the commonly rotated songs or artists. There's also an issue where many artists get played every 2 hours (which i get why for the average listener who only listens for like 30 minutes-1 hour on the road, but even in a small dose if you did that every day, eventually you'd catch the same song at that same hour. Artists that I've seen get played every 2 hours or so are Nirvana, Foo Fighters, Sublime, Jane's Addiction, The Cars, Depeche Mode, Soundgarden, Stone Temple Pilots, Smashing Pumpkins, Pearl Jam... a few others... which is definitely a bit much since there's so many classic songs I think many listeners would love to see rotated more, it would help even out the constant filler since while those artists are legendary and have good songs, they're overplayed every day or two that the playlists are overly repetitive with such a legendary station with a massive library. I get there's reasons about the popular stuff being played more, but I think there's a better way to even out playlists or making this format work. I'm sure one day maybe they'll switch back or touch it a bit. I still love the station, but it also just makes me a bit sad because there was so many good tunes I heard over the years both before the year I was born (2000) as well as after. But it seems like a lot of listeners just want pre-2000's stuff just because of nostalgia. I always saw 91X more as a station for people who love alt music (kind of like 94/9 in it's early-late 00's heyday). I could go on all day. My main positives are the events this year (Top 20 Weekend was fantastic on 4th of July weekend, the return of many good songs as well as random palette cleansers in between), and Sundays are fun with all the respective shows, and a few song surprises and the new music choices are fantastic (a lot of the new stuff is 91X being 91X, some being played on other stations, a lot being played more on indie stations, plus MEMES and High Vis which no one plays). I think if the playlist in between the new songs and first songs in a set got fixed a bit it would definitely benefit most listeners as you can't please everyone.

Well, this shut me up. That one is a total bummer for Indianapolis people. Is this their only alt station too?

God damn I made the good decision to listen tonight for a bit. Shimmer by Fuel just got played out of nowhere. Love it when the song that isn't on constant rotation appears. Wish they did this a lot more during the day lol

Wish they did this a lot more during the day lol ”Shimmer” is one of the best post-grunge songs ever, if not THE best. It deserves more love. There’s a lot going on in that song sonically and lyrically.

Wish they did this a lot more during the day lol ”Shimmer” is one of the best post-grunge songs ever, if not THE best. It deserves more love. There’s a lot going on in that song sonically and lyrically. I agree. In a roller coaster of quality that can be modern alt radio, post-grunge was personally my least favorite style that was big for the format years ago, but stuff like that was fantastic and a few Foo Fighters songs, think I'm missing a couple other I liked, I always felt most of it was bland. I know Nu Metal is hated a lot, but a lot of it I do like, it's goofy fun to me. And the many stuff that came in the 10's was mostly good, San Diego was good at choosing songs for the most part. Shimmer is one of those examples what I want 91X to do as advertised at the announcement of the format change. That random tune that appears in the playlist that hasn't been played in ages that surprises the listener in a sea of constant grunge hits, Sublime and a selective batch of 80's songs, which most of it I like, this kind of stuff is refreshing and helps the set list be less bland. June this happened late at night and on weekends for a tiny bit, then stopped, then Hilary's afternoon show gets some neat requests once in a while (Against Me - I was a Teenage Anarchist, Pennywise - No Reason Why, Spoon - Don't You Evah which was my request), I just like seeing a station with such a massive library to just play things I haven't heard in a while.

A little bummed Placebo's concert is the same night as me seeing IDKHOW and Joywave, which will be my first concert. Fell in love with the band's full discography this year after being reminded of their existance thanks to 91X this year, but it's in LA around the time I'd be at IDKHOW. LA doesn't even give them any airplay anymore, but it makes sense still as they're the bigger city, but it would've been cool if they came down to SD where we still give them a tiny bit of love, especially when Tim Pyles still worked for the station. He played the heck out of the singles from their newest record, which is probably one of personal favorite alt albums this year.
