Giovannie and the Hired Guns released their first single since signing with Warner Nashville. This is the song they performed live at their show and it gives me the same energy as Ramon Ayala (though more alternative leaning) so I don’t expect pulse to like it. Definitely hear the kind of songs they’re going to push to alt and active radio and more looking forward to their country -rock output. They’re going on some shows with Brantley Gilbert and Jelly Roll. Getting shows with Hardy would be GREAT for them too.

I don't know enough about it to add to the discussion. But I have long felt that the charts are broken, at least since February 2013. Just because a video goes viral doesn't mean the song is a hit. I feel there should be some investment behind a hit, like a radio station (who spends a lot of money broadcasting) spinning it, or at least people dropping a dollar and buying the song.

Baauer's 'Harlem Shake' Debuts Atop Revamped Hot 100
The Billboard Hot 100 undergoes a major shakeup this week, as YouTube streaming data joins the chart's methodology.
The Billboard Hot 100 undergoes a major shakeup this week, as YouTube streaming data joins the chart's methodology. Fittingly, "Harlem Shake," the viral smash from Brooklyn producer Baauer, roars onto the ranking at No. 1.
As announced today, Billboard and Nielsen have revealed that U.S. YouTube video streaming data has been added to multiple platforms, which includes an update to the formula for the five-decade-old Hot 100. YouTube streaming data is now factored into the chart, enhancing a recipe that includes digital download track sales (and physical singles sales), as tracked by Nielsen SoundScan, as well as terrestrial radio airplay, on-demand audio streaming, and online radio streaming, as tracked by Nielsen.
As "Shake" takes over atop the Hot 100 (and Dance/Electronic Songs, where it leaps from No. 12), it dethrones Macklemore & Ryan Lewis' "Thrift Shop," featuring Wanz, after a four-week reign. Showing just how strong "Shake" is in streaming, "Shop" registered an impressive 10.1 million streams in the chart's tracking week (dipping 1-2 on Streaming Songs), but the figure is clearly exponentially lower than the 103 million for "Shake." "Shake," in fact, leads the Hot 100 with three-and-a-half times the overall chart points total of "Shop."

The three charts (Alt/AAA/Active) you'll see talked about in this sub-forum the most are all radio-driven - Mediabase is a purely radio-play chart format and the three Billboard charts for those genres that are tracked here are also airplay based. This sometimes results in the opposite, where a song charts really high because of radio play, even if it's making almost no dent in streaming or sales (it seems to happen the most on the Active/Mainstream charts). There are actually quite a few Billboard-based rock charts that include streaming/sales (or only one or the other), such as Hot Rock & Alt Songs, Hot Rock Songs, Rock Streaming Songs, Rock Digital Song Sales, Hot Alt. Songs, etc. (as well as album charts).

Thanks for explaining. Since we're on the subject, do you know how this happens? An artist who is obviously not rock, with songs that are definitely not rock, ruling the rock charts. It's been bugging me for years! 2014 was the year of our Lorde.
The singer/songwriter (real name: Ella Yelich-O’Connor) finishes at No. 1 on the 2014 year-end Top Rock Artists recap, and her Pure Heroine album leads the Alternative Albums and Rock Albums tallies. She’s the first woman to lead the latter list since it was established in 2006.
In 2013, Lorde arrived with her smash hit single “Royals,” which helped the artist finish as that year’s No. 3 Rock Artist.
Pure Heroine has sold 1.5 million copies in the U.S. since its release in October 2013, according to Nielsen Music, and debuted at No. 3 on the weekly Billboard 200 albums chart, and No. 1 on Top Rock Albums and Alternative Albums. The title ranked at No. 14 on last year’s year-end Rock Albums chart.
Lorde also places more titles on the 2014 year-end Hot Rock Songs (eight) than any other act, led by “Team” (No. 2) and “Royals” (No. 3). “Royals,” which ruled the weekly Hot Rock Songs chart for 19 weeks in 2013 and 2014, also crowns the year-end Rock Streaming Songs chart.www.billboard.com/pro/year-in-rock-2014-lorde

In the first couple years of Billboard's modern rock chart there was plenty of electronic, dance, reggae, worldbeat, folk, trip-hop, and rap songs charting. You can look at the very first Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart in September 1988 and there's Ziggy Marley and Erasure and Information Society and Hothouse Flowers on there alongside 10,000 Maniacs and Siouxsie & The Banshees. Ace of Base's "All That She Wants" was a Top 20 modern rock hit. Eminem and Adele have had multiple modern rock hits. Alternative radio has always loved genre-hopping stuff like "Royals". There isn't much separating the sound of that song from something like "Loser" by Beck. "Team" is a synthpop song that doesn't sound all too dissimilar from other synthpop songs that were either played historically by the format or in 2012-13. This is worth a read about the history of the format: pitchfork.com/features/article/9214-radio-friendly-unit-shifters-25-years-of-billboards-alternative-music-chart/This too, about Lorde specifically www.buzzfeed.com/perpetua/what-makes-lorde-an-alternative-artist

Thanks for these. That first article filled in some gaps in history for me. On the second article, I saw this: But overall, it's a set of songs that exist in more or less the same cultural space as Katy Perry and Miley Cyrus. (Not to mention Drake, who is also a pretty big fan of ambient minimalism.) But Lorde makes sense as an "alternative" act because she consistently positions herself as an outsider. I agree. I can see her being viewed as an alternative artist to some extent, though she quickly crossed over to pop. What I don't see is her being the #3 rock artist of 2013, hitting #1 on the top rock albums chart and #14 on the year-end rock albums chart, scoring 8 songs on the hot rock chart and being the top song on rock streaming. For me, there's "alternative" and "alt rock". And "alt pop". Similar but not the same. Maybe I'm alone on this though? Here's my take: Alternative Songs 2013-2015: Depeche Mode "Heaven" Die Antwoord "Pitbull Terrier" MGMT "Cool Song #2" Nine Inch Nails "Came Back Haunted" Prodigy "Ibiza" Alt Rock Songs 2013-2015: 1975 "Chocolate" Beach Slang "Dirty Cigarettes" Haim "Honey & I" MGMT "Your Life Is A Lie" Mother Mother "Bit By Bit" Rat Boy "Wasteman" Yacht "I Thought The Future Would Be Cooler" Alt Pop 2013-2015: Julien Baker "Sprained Ankle" Lily Allen "Hard Out Here" Twenty One Pilots "Stressed Out" But I guess it's based on which stations play the song. And if Active Rock stations decide to play Lorde between Alice In Chains and Stone Temple Pilots, she's gonna chart on the Active Rock chart, I suppose.

WNYL’s ratings have been in the toilet for years now. Out of all the stations who took the brunt of the poor policies of Audacy’s nationalization initiative, WNYL was ground zero. I’m amazed it wasn’t the first to go to be completely honest.

Read elsewhere that states that the alt format will continue at the HD2 channel, meaning like what happened to WSUN recently?

Yeah it looks like the New Arrivals channel on HD-2 is going to get punted off the airwaves. Unfortunate for those with HD radios and wanted to hear the new music Audacy doesn’t feel like adding to the main broadcasts.

Whispers are in radio circles right now predicting mass Alternative carnage in 2023. A lot of executives and program directors are ready to give up on the format, even though the format has shown that it can work in various parts of the country. But Alternative stations on the West Coast and New England are generally struggling and that seems to be getting treated as time to abandon ship by many radio companies.
We’ll see what happens but a lot of Alts may flip to Classic Alternative or to a different format altogether next year.
