Whispers are in radio circles right now predicting mass Alternative carnage in 2023. A lot of executives and program directors are ready to give up on the format, even though the format has shown that it can work in various parts of the country. But Alternative stations on the West Coast and New England are generally struggling and that seems to be getting treated as time to abandon ship by many radio companies. We’ll see what happens but a lot of Alts may flip to Classic Alternative or to a different format altogether next year. Welcome to the world of Active Rock a decade ago, Alternative fans. From the sounds of it, Alternative will be to 2023 what Active Rock was to 2012. Sucks, doesn't it? I do wish that new rock music, both mainstream and alternative, would get more support. It seems like everything new is being blended into a pop/rap/electronic borg, with a trace of country to cleanse the palate. There's not much sonic or format diversity anymore.
Be that as it may, I do like the idea of Classic Alternative as a format. In fact, there's been a low-power Classic Alternative station on the northeastern exurban fringe of Atlanta (Buford, Gainesville, Braselton, Winder) for about a decade now, called 97.7 The Other Side Of The River. It was founded by Steve Craig, who was one of the original founders of 99X, and is now the assistant program director at the Classic Hits station 97.1 the River, which is now the top-rated station in Atlanta. The Other Side Of The River has a nice blend of alternative rock from about the late 1970s through the early 2010s, and I hope it gets a power boost someday, since I live about 20 miles out of range.

I made a post about it dooming and glooming a week ago or so but deleted it for OCD reasons. I really hate hearing this news because Alternative's goal in my eyes has always been to play new artists who have potential to become beloved like the ones who did in the golden age of the format in the 80's-90's for the states. There's nothing wrong with playing classic stuff, that should always fill up a playlist as much as new music, but to be NOTHING but old music, defeats the purpose of alternative and just panders to one particular generation only that grew up with "How good alt rock was in the 90's" or whatever and they're satisfied when Blind Melon and selective Jane's Addiction songs play for the millionth time. The problem is how a lot of IHeart/Audacy alternative since I don't even know anymore would reward half of crap that's been plaguing the charts to this day that don't feel as alternative and refused to go indie for any of their regular alt stations OR give each station's ANY sort of freedom to play something new they might know and like to share with the audience. I've heard a lot of fantastic songs and bands in my life in the 00's and 10's that I'd argue surpass s**t like Lovelytheband and Imagine Dragons. If no one is going super deep with the 80's-90's and just playing the same gold-based hits and mostly getting rid of the tons and tons of fantastic underrated stuff in the 2000's-10's I'm sure a lot of people loved hearing as much as some gen x'ers probably hated hearing, then it's worthless. It's just another oldies station. I've heard some fantastic bands this year in 2022 on 91X even though it's mostly been Stray Cat Strut and Grunge bands every time I tune in that could help start and grow a new alternative movement for the entire country. If this is what alternative will be like, then radio is officially dead to me. I want to see it continue to coexist with streaming. I've always liked technology that way tbh. I really do love classic alternative songs, I really do, but if you're not surprising or deep, or focus on the entire alt history and being sure not to pick any crap, or focusing on good new bands or locality or engaging your audience, there's no point. I think alternative in America needs to do more what BBC Radio 6 is doing for alternative... actually being interesting and focusing on a diverse range of artists that's helped them still do well with listeners, even younger listeners. www.nme.com/news/music/bbc-6-music-posts-record-listening-figures-20th-year-3229539

The weird thing is that Audacy's star Alternative of the moment - the one that vanquished KEGL - is KVIL, which has a unique playlist and has developed a history of spinning currents not picked up by the rest of Audacy (usually Active-to-Alternative crossovers). You would think Audacy would take lessons from that.

91X top 91 of 2022 is up, and pretty much right on the money from the list I made (they missed a few but I did hit them up about it, Alvvays, Bjork, Mars Volta are a few examples). This year is loaded and voting is out now (Planet Nu Nu and FTW can also be voted same with Loudspeaker) www.91x.com/top-91/

There is a lot of AAA stuff on that list that I never heard them play once. Did they turn AAA format? 91X is interesting to me. In this list of 150 songs, I can confirm 135 of them were definitely rotated more than once about a few times per week for new music, in between all of the 80's-2000's classics. I tracked down the tunegenie daily for fun as well as tuning in plenty of times, and can even mention ones that were played pre-XYZ (Glass Animals, Beach Bunny, Wolf Alice, Dirty Heads, COIN and The Marias which were all 2021 carryovers), the two Bob Moses tracks from 2020 and 2018 (Back Down and Love We Found), I'm not sure are doing here and don't recall them getting played (maybe Project X), Mitski's Should've Been Me and Weezer's Records never got rotation or new music show appearences at all (the other Weezer and Mitski songs got rotated though), The Smashing Pumpkins' Beguiled debuted and never got played again (they did this with 3 other songs, The Mars Volta's Blacklight Shine, Bjork's Atopos and Pixies' There's a Moon On), and they forgot to add a couple songs (Jack White's That Was Then, This is Now, was rotated for two weeks with The White Raven as they loved both deep cuts), Pachyman and Winter's All Night Long got rotation for the BeerX event they were doing, Twenty One Pilots' the Outside was a rotation from 2021 that went to 2022, and the new Alvvays Easy On Your Own is also one they forgot to add to the list, it got debuted the day of the list's release, but so did Panic! at the Disco's Don't Let the Light go Out and Gorillaz' Baby Queen. They've always been a commercial station but also grab a lot of stuff from AAA charts, especially this year. And it's a shame because with all the great songs, I'm not sure how many people even listened to in a 1-2 hour basis if they're even listening long compared to non-casual listeners, as they only mostly play the classics. If they did the playlist in a more fair manner I wonder if people would love hearing a lot more AAA.

If they did the playlist in a more fair manner I wonder if people would love hearing a lot more AAA. Oh yeah, forgot to mention Beabadoobee didn't get played at all, I don't know why she's great. Howls' is Loudspeaker (local music), The Afghan Whigs made appearances during FTW and Planet Nu Nu, and Kings of Leon's Time in Disguise was 2021 I don't remember it getting rotated this year. Regrettes was also 2021 and 2022. Bartees Strange, IDLES, Fontaines D.C., etc? All got played a lot, indie darlings to 91X. Like in that 91X rotations topic I never continued due to missing a lot of weeks as well as not knowing if people were interested, many AAA stuff appeared. It's been sweet and easily my favorite thing of the year next to the events like top 20 weekend, Block Party Weekend and sunday night shows. Ressurection Sunday is ace too. Though a lot is more like a hundred times in total probably with how they do the new song per hour thing and each song gets fair rotation (though Red Hot Chili Peppers mostly got late night rotations), 2 songs per hour also happens at night. Really weird year for 91X. They know about my fan hijinxs though. I've seen things happen. Songs playing twice in a span of several hours, songs that are newer appearing once and never being played again, Tenacious D randomly appearing near Halloween, MGMT's In the Afternoon which I didn't even KNOW was in their library for Block Party. Rare occurrences that just makes me remember why I like radio haha. I've also got into reading old radio magazines and even discovered more rare stuff they got played that I haven't seen appear yet but been listening on streaming for fun, seeing how I feel about them and just use them as resurrection sunday requests.

As an example of how this playlist works. All over the place. 12-5AM (6AM on weekends), the new music will always debut as the 4th song in a new set. 1st song in a set is one of the more rarer tracks they rotate. Then at 5-10 it's their morning show so NO new music gets rotated at the moment, and for some reason How Soon is Now? got played at 6AM and 10AM, (I can't tell if the 9:29 AM one is a shorter version or they were talking about the Morrissey show and a clip of it played) and then from 10AM-12AM, it's back to one song per hour for new music. Some of it including Manchester Orchestra's No Rule, White Reaper's Pages, Crosses' Vivien and more. Also randomly a bunch of Bob Marley is getting played outside of again, before the past couple weeks Marley only got played on what 91X has always called "Mandatory Marley" at 4:20, as well as Church of Bob on Sundays, and some 10's have returned again (Dog Days are Over, Walk, Trouble). xetra.tunegenie.com/onair/2022-11-18/

It's that time of year when best album/song lists start to drop. Here's Paste's: www.pastemagazine.com/music/best-albums/best-albums-of-2022/Top 10 for your consideration: 1. Big Thief - Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe in You2. Alex G. - God Save the Animals3. Alvvays - Blue Rev4. Wet Leg - Wet Leg5. Black Country, New Road - Ants From Up There6. Soul Glo - Diaspora Problems7. Angel Olsen - Big Time8. Beyonce - Renaissance9. Spoon - Lucifer on the Sofa10. MJ Lederman - Boat SongsI haven't listened to three of these all the way through - Soul Glo, Beyonce and MJ Lederman (and not listened to any Soul Glo or MJ). Of the ones here, I probably listened to Wet Leg the most. That is just such a fun album front to back. Spoon would be my second favorite from this list.

Is WNNX still on the active panel? They’re stunting at least 24 hours of “Bitter Sweet Symphony” right now, so I expect a format change on Monday. Anyone heard what it might be?

They’re doing either Classic Hits, adult alternative, or alternative. The key quote of their imaging is “same as it ever was”. EDIT: I increasingly think WNNX is going to flip to Alt under their heritage 99X branding. What kind of alternative remains to be seen though.

It’s currently airing on a tiny 98.9 signal (and the HD2 of CHR WWWQ). I was just browsing it’s online playlist. If they don’t change it’s up, it runs about 30-35 currents heavy with some good showing up in their top 40 most played. Pretty safe list IMO. They do have a good local music show on Friday evenings.

WNNX is bringing back the 99X name and old school branding with a classic alternative format. Jocks begin in January, so it's just a running playlist right now. If they were still on the active panel, I am assuming they'll be dropped immediately. Listened for a little bit during lunch. In the 30 minutes I tuned in, it was a mix of mostly 90s, a little early 2000s (played Kings of Leon) and some 80s (played Cure and Dexy's Midnight Runner). I was glad to hear it wasn't just grunge. As much as I love the grunge sound, 90s alt was sooo much more varied. They played (going off memory here) Moby, Pearl Jam, Fastball and Stone Roses from the 90s. Radio Insight article with details.

The last one I listened to put Dreamcar - "Kill For Candy" at #6 for the year. It doesn't seem like so long ago, but Alternative format has changed for the worst. Maybe they will showcase some Alt music that wasn't all that popular. That's code for actual good music. If you know what I mean.

The list is out, and I thought it was great like 2017, 2019-2021 were, but I think a lot of the stuff I didn't care for as much (Death Cab, Talk, Eddie Vedder) and stuff I dislike (Arcade Fire, Blink-182) made it too high, but a lot of my favorite stuff (Turnstile, Wet Leg, Fontaines D.C., Pierce, Gorillaz, MCR, Alvvays, Beach House) made the list, but most of it I feel made past #30. www.91x.com/top-91/top-91-2022/Also rest in peace to Modest Mouse's drummer. I heard the news the other day about his cancer diagnosis, didn't expect him to past so suddenly. Kill For Candy is such a banger btw I miss that one.

I would be in favor of alt kind of marrying with some of the rock formats - at least in terms of its playlists (Motionless White, Ayron Black, et al can I think go into 'alternative' category, as well).
I don't mind the classic format, of which I feel Audacy (96.5 here in Kansas City) has tended towards, though I think there's always an incentive to promote new music and newer musicians. I think 'alternative' as a format definitely understands/"gets" itself - just needs to be more expansive in terms of sound in newer artists. I also feel like there should be incentive to promote local artists and is one of the things that I believe sets our great formats apart from others in the industry. Though others obviously have other advantages.
Just my $.02.

Latest article from Billboard about the rise of Public Radio. www.billboard.com/pro/public-radio-kexp-kutx-growing-audiences-new-music/Now all of the stations they list as the dominant examples are from AAA, but I assume the concept of good-faith public radio is largely the same across other formats (now how expansive, is something I'm way too out of my depth on).

The NonComms are predominantly AAA from what I can tell, but there is a lot of variety there. Some skew more towards the stereotype of americana leaning AAA/alt. There's a handful really trying to push what they consider alt-urban (WNXP in Nashville is good about this).
I'd love to see some more traditional Alt or even heavy leaning noncomms. But demographics of public radio (older, affluent) usually means the audience prefers to skew away from the hardest edges if underground music (just my personal observation).

I'd love to see some more traditional Alt or even heavy leaning noncomms. Try Indie 102.3 in Colorado. They run a mix of alt and urban alt, though they aren't playing some alt songs such as Then It All Goes Away and Stick Season. They've also given some love to Turnstile this album era.

I strongly suspect that "alternative urban" is going to become more and more of a factor as the years go by. Honestly I'm surprised it fizzled out last year. Foushee and Black Pumas scored top 10s in 2021 and then... nothing.
