I'm sure her next album could get into the list though.

^The Bodyguard and Daydream were not in their debut weeks; rather, those totals came during the peak week of the holiday-shopping season.
Titanic- also not its debut week- has no business on that list. LOL Yes, "My Heart WIll Go On" drive album sales, but it's the only track with sung lyrics on the album.

I believe the Titanic and Mariah ones were not debut weeks. I remember Mariah selling that much over Christmas week. I'm not sure about some of the others.
I don't think Adele has a chance of making this list. This week will probably be her peak sales week (impressive for an album over a year old that's already sold so much).
I wouldn't be surprised if Adele's third album joins those ranks in its debut week though, even if it has no big hit.

Since she's not taking a 5-year break, I suspect Ms. Adkins stands a good chance of scoring a decent-sized hit single with her next album. ;)

Who was the last artist to have 2 albums in the top 5? Not including death-related sales spikes.

^ Justin Bieber, although the sales weren't 1/10 as impressive as what Adele's projected to sell.

Yeah, I just copy and pasted it off an old thread. Probably not the best list. I was trying to find the full Top 50/100 list of those one week sales and eliminate the non-females, but I haven't been able to find it.

Did HITS happen to mention a projection for 19 this week? Adele 19 (XL/Columbia) 80-90k Easily top 5...could battle it out with Whitney and the Grammy album for top 3... Amazing :o

Damn... who would have thought that when "Chasing Pavements" was a brief minor hit a couple of years ago that one day its parent album would be in the Top 5 and scan over 2 million in sales?

I was a BIG fan of 'Chasing Pavements'. I always felt Adele was way too out there to ever be a huge star stateside at that time. I grouped her with Duffy a lot even though they had different styles. Great singer from the UK that the US charts won't take seriously because of no autotune.

Ironically Duffy had more success in the US the last time, at least in terms of radio (Adele got the Grammy). Now their careers went into two very different directions. I still like all three singles from Adele's debut more than any of the 21 singles to be honest. "Hometown Glory" in particular- basically the only Adele song I have on my iPod and I have two version of it. Being reminded of those songs now, it feels so surreal... remembering that "undiscovered' random singer and being transported into the future where she's a ubiquitous radio and sales star.

Anyone remember Adele's "Cold Shoulder?" I saw it on VH1 a couple times and even heard it on Sirius/XM once...great tune.

It's crazy that she is on target to sell about the same as the rest of the top ten combined.

And people thought Leona Lewis was going to slay Adele in years to come.

I first heard Adele when she appeared on Ugly Betty. She did "Right as Rain" on there, but I don't think that song went anywhere on the chart.

When Adele and Duffy first came out in the UK they were very much grouped together and almost seen as rivals. I always much preferred Adele and was disappointed when she was the much less successful of the two. How the tables have turned. Apparently 21's success (and to a lesser extent Duffy's Diet Coke advert and whatever her second album was called's failure) lead to her quitting music. It's weird to think of an alternate universe where Duffy has all this success now though, because she's more or less the exact opposite of Adele, in that she doesn't care about music at all and is a skinny, opportunistic blonde bitch.
I've said it many times now, but it's still odd for me to think back four and a half years to when I discovered "Hometown Glory". Never in a million years did I think Adele would have this much success. Even when I first heard "Rolling In The Deep" fifteen months ago I thought she was on track for a low key era.
Something that I definitely think is a shame in regards to Pulse is, if you look at Adele's thread there really were only a handful of people interested until "Rolling In The Deep" blew up the States. It's a shame that even here it takes a level of success until anyone cares. You'd think the knowledge that this woman so many Pulse members apparently love was out there releasing music for years before they were interested would inspire them to check out more artists who are in the position Adele was a year or so ago.

It's weird that the now series typically revitalize at 2 or 3...I remember in the early 2000s it debuting at #1 with like 300k. At least its still going.

It admittedly takes quite a bit off personal legwork to discover new artists that aren't being played on radio every ten minutes or otherwise shoved down your throat. I think this plays a major part in why most people still aren't looking into unknown artists. They probably wouldn't know where to start. I remember being surprised that Adele won the BNA b/c I was so sure she and Duffy would split votes. Plus, Duffy was also the one who was a bit more popular at the time so I figured she would be the one to pull in more votes. It is kind of weird to think back on that time now; I remember feeling sorry for Adele b/c I loved 19 so much but she not only was written off from the start as an Adele clone, she was even in Duffy's shadow...like the Jessica to Amy and Duffy's Britney/Christina. Crazy to see how much that all changed in just a couple of years. How exactly did 21 cause Duffy to quit music? I'd never heard that before. I'm vaguely familiar with the Diet Coke ad controversy and I know her second album (Endlessly) flopped hard. Then she got engaged to some rich guy and was like, peace out.

Word of mouth is a great way to find out about relatively unknown artists. Find out who your friends are listening to that you've never heard of, and check them out. In the process you'll start stumble across some hidden gems of your own.

That's the first I've heard of this, but I don't really pay much attention to her. Do you have any articles or the sort about it? I have no idea where, but I remember reading around the time she came out that she never really listened to music and had never planned to be a singer. She just kind of got discovered and got turned into this very stylised artist who has no connection to the kind of music she released at all. That always rubbed me the wrong way and seemed so different to Adele, who has such a connection to music and what she sings. That, plus the fact that she quit music the second she wasn't the hottest thing about... How exactly did 21 cause Duffy to quit music? I'd never heard that before. I'm vaguely familiar with the Diet Coke ad controversy and I know her second album (Endlessly) flopped hard. Then she got engaged to some rich guy and was like, peace out. Well it was a combination of things. One was the fact that her second album really did sell next to nothing. Quitting music when you don't sell very much with only your second album doesn't put you in a great light. Then there was the Diet Coke ad. Type 'Duffy quits music' into Google and see what the articles say about the advert. 'Worst thing ever' is a reoccuring theme. It basically made her a laughing stock and again, seems to me to be another thing that's the polar opposite of what Adele would do. And I'm suuuuure I read something where 'a friend' said that 21 doing so well just rubbed Duffy's flopping in her face and was the last straw. She officially quit music about a month after it was released.

I mean, I liked Chasing Pavements (first time I heard her on radio) and then Hometown Glory came out and I became an instant fan of hers, but never, ever, did I thought she was gonna be this successful. I remember going to get her album 21 the day it came out. It was night time and I drove around town listening to it in full without skipping a track. I was blown away. It's such an amazing album. I love when you buy an album and you immediately hear something special. That was 21 for me. :)
