The number and magnitude of pop radio singles isn't always the best indicator of what will be a hit album.
Albums without big singles have sold 10 million copies (Norah Jones) and albums with many singles haven't sold much at all

Wow, that makes me appreciate the artists we have who throw themselves into their work a lot more. I'll never roll my eyes at another overly excited Gaga interview again. I'm crying.

Anyone remember Adele's "Cold Shoulder?" I saw it on VH1 a couple times and even heard it on Sirius/XM once...great tune. Ugh I love that song. I was a fan before she blew up and it had a lot to do with "Hometown Glory". I love that song so much. And to add to Duffy, I never liked her. There was a song she had that I did but that was it. Her music sounded to Motown for me. I use Raphael Saadiq for that. :)

I don't really think illegal downloading hurts albums as many think. If they like it, they'll buy it. This should be able to hit 10 million by May. Especially with the 650+...could even do 700-800 Downloading doesnt hurt Adele coz her audience is more mature but dling hurts rap and pop releases all the time People say it does, but there is no real proof of it. There are tons of ways for people to get albums. Libraries have huge CD catalogs now where hundreds of people can check out one disc. One person can buy a disc and then make 10 copies for friends. both of these have been going on for 10+ years now. The theory still stands that if someone likes an album, they will buy something from said artist whether it be a concert ticket, a future album, merchandise, etc. Downloading, if anything, is helping the industry in more ways than it is hurting it.

And in the old days, people taped songs off the radio onto cassette, made copies of albums onto cassettes, etc. This kind of thing has been going on for years and years.
iTunes and the ability to buy individual tracks is what eventually caused album sales to plummet. Once digital sales started taking off, the big annual declines happened.

^ Yeah, I don't think the digital era has increased "music theft" at all, it's just changed the methods. When I was younger, I remember people would burn albums and give it to their friends swehmatt said. You could also return an opened CD if you didn't like it to some chains, and I knew people who would buy them, rip them, and then return them for a full refund. When I was really young, I remember my older cousin telling me that her friends used to wait for their favorite songs to come on the radio and be ready with a blank cassette to record them. Technically all of that is the same principle as P2P and was very common.

Unless you have really state of the art equipment, copying to a blank cassette, degrades the quality of the copy as compared to the original

Unless you have really state of the art equipment, copying to a blank cassette, degrades the quality of the copy as compared to the original Yes but that's besides the point. People still recorded songs to save money from buying albums.

And people are often satisfied with lower quality illegal downloads too.

^And I thought I was late to the party a few months back when I got them simultaneously. :)
19 has loads of room to grow- all those people who have 21 but have yet to dip into the first album.

People still recorded songs to save money from buying albums. I did that too and found a huge difference in quality. I think companies knew that too which is likely why it wasn't as big of an issue as now Anyway, I sometimes made copies but purchased the original to preserve quality

I have already listened to both albums in their entirety, but finally got around to physically purchasing both full albums. I figured if any week, this should be the week to buy them. I always liked 19 more though. Has one of my favorite songs, 'Melt My Heart To Stone'. I finally fell in love with 'Rumour Has It' too.

Adele's '21' Bump Getting Bigger: Now Aiming for 650-680,000 Sales Weekby Keith Caulfield, L.A. | February 17, 2012 9:24 EST Adele's "21" is shaping up to have an even bigger week than first thought. Presently, the set is now projected to sell somewhere in the range of 650,000 to 680,000 by week's end on Sunday, Feb. 19, according to industry sources. That's up from the half-million-plus forecast that Billboard reported on Thursday morning (Feb. 16). Next week, "21" will mark its one-year anniversary on the chart -- a list where it's never left the top 10 in a single week. It will also notch its 21st week at No. 1 and surpass the 7 million U.S. sales threshold. Currently, its sales stand at 6.62 million. Finally, if "21" sells more than 650,000 this week, it will be the best week for any album since Lil Wayne's "Tha Carter IV" debuted with 964,000 at No. 1 on the chart dated Sept. 17, 2011. It will also be "21's" biggest sales week, period. Its highest frame came over the Christmas holiday, when it shifted 399,000. On Nielsen SoundScan's Building chart (below), Adele is -- no surprise -- at No. 1 while the "2012 Grammy Nominees" compilation is at No. 2. The Building tally is a precursor to the final Billboard 200 ranking -- reflecting the first four days (Monday through Thursday) of SoundScan's tracking week (ending Sunday, Feb. 19) as reported by six major merchants. The "Now 41" compilation is in the third place position, Paul McCartney's "Kisses on the Bottom" is found at No. 4 and Van Halen's "A Different Kind of Truth" is No. 5. Coldplay's "Mylo Xyloto" is No. 6, Bruno Mars' "Doo-Wops & Hooligans" is No. 7 and Lady Antbellum's "Own the Night" is at No. 8. The Civil Wars' "Barton Hollow" could find itself jumping into the top 10 for the first time next week, as it stands at No. 8 on the Building chart. The duo had a short performance on the Grammy Awards -- as a prelude to introducing Taylor Swift to the stage -- and it is clearly resonating with consumers. Rounding out the Building tally's top 10 is the Fray's "Scars & Stories." One note about SoundScan's Building chart -- it does not include catalog (older) albums, so Adele's "19" is absent from the list. However, Billboard expects that "19" will feature in the top five of the Billboard 200 chart next week. (The Billboard 200 includes both current and catalog titles.) The new Billboard 200 chart's top 10 will be revealed on the morning of Wednesday, Feb. 22. Nielsen SoundScan Building Chart Rank LW Artist Title 1 1 Adele "21" 2 8 Various Artists "2012 Grammy Nominees" 3 3 Various Artists "Now 41" 4 5 Paul McCartney "Kisses on the Bottom" 5 2 Van Halen "A Different Kind of Truth" 6 14 Coldplay "Mylo Xyloto" 7 30 Bruno Mars "Doo-Wops & Hooligans" 8 17 Lady Antebellum "Own the Night" 9 41 The Civil Wars "Barton Hollow" 10 4 The Fray "Scars & Stories" The Building Chart reflects the first four days (Monday through Thursday) of SoundScan's tracking week (which ends Sunday) as reported by six major merchants: iTunes, Trans World Entertainment, Best Buy, Starbucks, Target and Anderson Merchandisers. Billboard estimates that they make up about 85% of all U.S. album sales. It's a shame that the Civil Wars will likely just miss the top 10, with 19 and WH Greatest Hits sneaking into the top 10 as catalog titles.

^Makes sense considering the fact that it was the highest rated Grammy's since '84. Would love to see it go Gold but I doubt that's gonna happen.

I never understood the comparisons people try to throw toward Adele, especially w/the other Brit gurls. None of them have had an ounce of the same success Adele has achieved in the past year. Whenever she releases again, I can see her getting some nice Top 10s, possibly a #1 & a 3x platinum album. But enough w/that. ONLY time will tell what the future holds for her. I'm loving these new predictions. Getting closer & closer to diamond

Unfortunately, despite being just as good as Back To Black and Rockferry IMO, 19 was kind of brushed off because of the other two eclipsing it in sales and ubiquity at the time. Any comparative talk now is mainly in the vein of, "who ever would have guessed that Adele of all three would be the one to come back and smash the hardest?"

19 as good at Back to Black? Let's not engage in revisionist history here. 21 is an amazing album, certainly better than 19 and maybe (not definitively if you look at aggregate reviews) better than Back to Black, but to suggest that Adele's first album is superior to Back to Black (and not Rockferry, which garbage) is just foolish. Most of us love Adele. Some of us are reasonable.

That's not revisionist (on my part anyway); first of all I did not say 19 was superior, I said it was "just as good as." And second of all that was my genuine opinion in 2008 - I genuinely thought 19 was a great album then, so it's hardly revisionist that I still do now. All of this is JMO, of course, but it's hardly foolish for one to think all three of those ladies put out more or less equal output in the beginning. That doesn't take away at all from the flawlessness that was B2B (or Frank, for that matter). I'd argue that in both Adele and Amy's cases revisionism actually punishes their first eras more than it boosts them; most people are so quick to laud all the praise on 21 and B2B that they downplay the predecessors as being mere warm-ups. I also thought Rockferry was great, too, Duffy just didn't live up to it nearly as much with Endlessly.

Adele's an incredible talent but 21 can't compare to Back To Black.

"Chasing Pavements" will always be her best single imo, so glad to see "19" get a resurgence. I could never understand how Adele keeps getting these amazing sales day in and day out and then I realize that I myself am just now considering buying it despite hearing her all over the place and watching all the buzz.
I dare you to let me beeeeee yoooo won & onleeeee

To think before 21 came out we were seeing almost weekly new Soundscan-low records, this is the album that really energized the albums landscape, sure not enough for a major rebound overall but at least it gave us something to feel excited for, sales-wise.
