Another week, one more chart-topper from Columbia Records.
This week, look for Syco/Columbia X Factor U.K. finalists One Direction to challenge Adele for the top spot on next week’s charts with their stateside debut, Up All Night, based on one-day sales reports from those retailers not selling albums for 25 cents. The deluxe edition of the album has already topped the iTunes chart in the U.S. and Canada.
The band, which finished third on the British version of Simon Cowell’s music competition show, arrive in the U.S. with the kind of fan-mania not seen in these parts since the Spice Girls and the boy bands.
"I always thought these guys were stars, I am thrilled for them." said Cowell
The fivesome caused a riot this week at NBC’s Today Show on Monday, and drew more than 5,000 fans to in-stores in Boston and Long Island earlier this month. Their Brit Award-winning, #1 Best British Single, “What Makes You Beautiful,” is approaching 350k in sales in the U.S. The music video has drawn over 60 million views. The band will perform the song on Nickelodeon’s Kids Choice Awards show March 31, and on Saturday Night Live April 7 with host Modern Family's Sofia Vergara.
The upfront excitement has probably inflated the initial sales figures, which at this point are looking to be between 190-210k, which will set up a battle with Adele for #1. As always, we'll have a clearer picture tomorrow.
The only other release of note is Equal Vision’s new Say Anything album, Anarchy, My Dear, which should do around 12-15k…unless Google or Amazon put something else on sale for two bits.

The New Release Schedule said 175k and a lot of people didn't think it was going to happen.

Do they have any further promo lined up this week? 190-210k would be great.

Pretty impressive numbers for them. I know they have a lot of hype, but the song hasn't truly developed yet and there really hasn't been an intense, focused extended promotional attack yet. It will be interesting to see if they will fizzle or explode from here on out.

Thais reminds me of the "Boy Band Bubble" that came in late 1997/early 1998. As someone who lived through it, this is not something I would want to go through again. So many great releases from 1998-2001 were overlooked in favor of this shit.

Note that it says "challenge" for No. 1. So it's not really a definite yet. But, I agree- while I'm not crazy on the music, some fresh titles at the top is a good thing.
21 had some 63K more in physical-album sales than Springsteen's album. We may see a similar showing for 21 and the One Direction album, the latter which looks to be dominating digitally.

It's not a groundbreaking work, nor is it the best thing I've heard all year, but it's more than a worthy one-week #1. People are buying it because they genuinely like these guys and their music.

^I sampled the tracks, and nothing really sounded all that enticing. Some tolerable stuff- a lot of radio-ready material. The act was on X Factor, so no one really should be expecting an out-of-this-world album. I would hope people who are buying the album are doing so because they like it. and/or the act

The New Release Schedule said 175k and a lot of people didn't think it was going to happen. Have to admit, I would have doubted they'd open with sales this high too. I knew they had a growing hit single and that they'd done some marketing to the Nickelodeon crowd, but I didn't realize they'd built this much of a following. It's probably because I'm out of touch with their target age group at this point, but I've never even heard the band mentioned off Pulse. Other than the appearances mentioned in the HDD article, what is it they've been doing to get this kind of hype behind them, out of curiosity?

One Direction Aiming for Historic No. 1 on Billboard 200 Albums Chart March 14, 2012 By Keith Caulfield ( keith_caulfield), Los Angeles One Direction could be on the way to making history on the Billboard 200 albums chart next week. Industry sources suggest the vocal quintet's "Up All Night" may sell between 160,000 and 180,000 copies by the end of the tracking week on March 18. One Direction Has Highest Hot 100 Debut For New U.K. Act Since The Verve In 1998 That sum could be enough to snag a No. 1 bow -- and it would mark the first U.K. group in history to debut at No. 1 with its first album. Adele's "21" set may also sell around 150,000 to 160,000 -- so that album could block One Direction from No. 1 and make a return to the top (for a 24th week!). While many U.K. groups have hit No. 1 (Coldplay, the Beatles, Spice Girls, Depeche Mode and so on) none have -- so far -- opened atop the list with their first release. The new Billboard 200 chart's top 10 will be revealed on the morning of Wednesday, March 21. Formed on the 2010 edition of the U.K.'s "X Factor" TV program, One Direction comprises Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson. All of the group hails from U.K., save for Horan, who is from Ireland. The act has nabbed three top three U.K. singles and reached No. 2 with its debut album "Up All Night" in November 2011. Back on the U.S. charts, "Up All Night's" lead single "What Makes You Beautiful" climbs from No. 50 to No. 44 this week on the Billboard Hot 100. It debuted at No. 28 three weeks ago. So far, the song has sold 338,000 downloads in the U.S. according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Closer than expected! :o The power of SLAYDELE!! I thought One Direction for sure would get it (the label was expecting 175k, but now it looks like it's 160k-180k). Since sales are front-loaded, it might be on the lower end. Hmmmm..... another close one again!

I was going to say this is the first time in ages I've known nothing about an artist with a #1 album but then I realized I had no idea who Mac Miller or J.Cole were either.

It's one of the weakest on the album, so you might not mind so much once the era's really unfolding.

I hope they explode. I hope there are 3 more groups just like them by the end of the year. I hope tweens are obsessed with them. Tweens bring their parents money and inflate record sales overall.
BRANG IT ON!

The New Release Schedule estimated 250k for Bruce Springsteen.
Upcoming numbers:
3/13:
One Direction 175k Ting Tings 25k
3/20:
The Shins 100k Hunger Games Sdtk. 100k Cold Future 60k Melanie Fiona 38k Esperanza Spulding 32k
3/26:
Madonna 205k Shinedown 90k Lionel Richie 65k All American Rejects 40k Katy Perry re-release 39k
4/3:
Nicki Minaj 500k Rascal Flatts 180k Marvin Sapp 90k
Remember, we have no idea how they compile these numbers. I'm sure some are based on pre-orders from retailers and the first week sales of the last release.

So it looks like if Adele doesn't reclaim this week (which seems unlikely) she has a good shot next week, then we've got Madonna and Nicki.

There is nothing on that One Direction album that is even remotely good. It doesn't touch anything that Max Martin did with BSB. Columbia is "Rolling In The Dough" though.

I'd like to see Melanie Fiona at least cross 50K but "4AM" needs bigger radio exposure for that to happen.

Hunger Games Soundtrack has 2 Taylor Swift songs on it and that movie has been really hyped up. And the movie comes out in the same week as the album release, I believe. It's one to look out for.

I fully expect the Taylor songs to sell well that week but I'm not as sure it will translate into big sales for the soundtrack overall. It's been pretty rare to have big soundtracks, hasn't it lately? I know the Twilight ones tend to do well but they are more of a brand than the Hunger Games. It's a wild card I'd say!

Columbia will continue its exclusive run of #1 albums this week as One Direction joins label mates Adele and Bruce Springsteen as the only acts to top the chart so far this year. In what may be a four-peat for Columbia, The Shins will see some stiff competition next week from Universal Republic's soundtrack to The Hunger Games. Google's 25-cent sale continues to have an impact on this week's chart as Guns N' Roses lands at #3 with their Greatest Hits collection. Here's how it looks headed into the weekend:
*One Direction (Syco/Columbia) 165-175k Adele 21 (XL/Columbia) 150-160k Guns N' Roses (Geffen) 75-80k Bruce Springsteen (Columbia) 50-55k Whitney Houston Greatest Hits (RCA) 45-50k Drake (YM/Cash Money/Universal Republic) 25-30k Now 41 (Capitol/EMI) 24-27k Adele 19 (XL/Columbia) 21-24k Gotye (Fairfax/Universal Republic) 20-23k fun. (Fueled by Ramen) 19-22k Project X soundtrack (WaterTower) 18-21k Whitney Houston I Look To You (RCA) 18-21k Rihanna (Def Jam/IDJ) 18-21k The Bodyguard soundtrack (RCA) 17-20k Luke Bryan Tailgates & Tanlines (Capitol Nashville/EMI) 17-20k
* Debut (3/15p)

Hunger Games presale info is showing that it may open even bigger than Twilight and break all types of records. Of course, that does not necessarily guarantee a huge soundtrack, but all the elements are there for it to be a surprise hit. It will be interesting to watch. In fact, it will be an interesting next month or so with Madonna, Nicki, Hunger Games, Adele, and One Direction.
I am still surprised people are calling 39K for Katy an "amazing total"-I just figured being on your 8th mega smash in a row would bring slightly bigger numbers. Maybe it will trend upwards though and people are just being ultra conservative.
