I am still surprised people are calling 39K for Katy an "amazing total"-I just figured being on your 8th mega smash in a row would bring slightly bigger numbers. Maybe it will trend upwards though and people are just being ultra conservative. ...who is saying it's an amazing total? I think 39k would be pretty poor, but I wouldn't expect anything above 75k. It's a re-release in the tradition sense (those don't seem to very successful these days) opposed to the EP/Deluxe that have gained favor, so I'm thinking more people are going to just buy the three new songs instead of buying the package that is mostly filled with songs they already have. Edit: Fantastic numbers for One Direction! Will they be the first British act to debut at #1?

Some of her fans which I guess explains calling it amazing or well above what they ever expected ha ha. I definitely wouldn't expect huge numbers by any means, but she is the biggest pop star right now with radio and consumers lapping her up non-stop-just seems like under 40K is a tad low. I think she should be able to do above 50K+ on the strength of yet another huge massive #1 smash pushing it. I don't know maybe I am wrong.

Was there any UK boyband that ever hit #1 on Billboard 200? I knew that for UK girlband, Spice Girls did it.

If you're using a strict definition of UK boyband that limits it to artists like Take That and Blue and Busted and McFly, I believe the answer is no. If you're just looking at all-male UK groups, then there'd be a lot, but I assume that's not the question's intent.

I wasn't ever expecting much from this re-release. As you said, it's just three new songs, and the biggest fans will have already bought POM by the time it's re-released. And even if fans haven't bought the three remixes, there's been plenty of time to pick them up, so there's nothing new there. Let's also not forget that Katy's fans are more digital buyers than physical, so it's not surprising that the re-release wouldn't sell much. I'd expect decent digital numbers for all of the new songs, though.

I think Wham! can be regarded as a boy band of their time and Make It Big (1984) reached #1.

Really pleased for One Direction. There are some great songs on the CD and with continued promotion and radio support they should have a great year.

Oops, missed that part.
But whilst George Michael had *real talent* they had bunch of teenage fans, mostly girls.
And don't you people think that Justin Timberlake, Gary Barlow, Robbie Williams etc don't have *real talent* ;)
The whole debate between boy band and talent is absurd. It takes more *talent* to be in a boyband and in spotlight than playing bass in a regular rock band.

Pretty sure Robbie Williams, Gary Barlow and Justin Timberlake all write their own songs and play instruments as well. I think it's easy to laugh off boy bands as uncool, but I'd hardly say they lack in talented individuals who can write some very catchy tunes.

One Direction Vs. Adele for No. 1 on the Billboard 200 Next Week
March 16, 2012 By Keith Caulfield, Los Angeles
U.K. pop group One Direction is aiming for a No. 1 debut on the Billboard 200 album chart next week with its first album, "Up All Night." However, Adele's "21" may block the quintet from the top with a return to No. 1.
Presently, industry sources suggest "Up All Night" may sell between 160,000 and 170,000 copies by the end of the tracking week on March 18. However, Adele's "21" could sell right around the same amount.
How the albums perform over the weekend will play a large part in their placing on the chart next week. Even if One Direction settles for a No. 2 bow, it will make history as the highest debut from U.K. group's debut album.
The new Billboard 200 chart's top 10 will be revealed on the morning of March 21.
Theoretically, both albums could profit from the weekend and family shopping at big box stores like Target and Walmart.
Adele -- believe it or not -- is still being discovered by thousands of people each week. And her Grammy performance is still fresh in the average consumer's mind.
On the other hand, when families are out doing their weekly shopping on Saturday and Sunday, you can picture young kids bugging their parents to buy the One Direction album as they pass by a display at Target.
On Nielsen SoundScan's Building chart (below), One Direction is at No. 1 while Adele is in the runner-up slot. The Building tally is a precursor to the final Billboard 200 ranking -- reflecting the first four days (Monday through Thursday) of SoundScan's tracking week as reported by six major merchants.
As for the rest of the top 10 on the Building chart, Bruce Springsteen's current Billboard 200 No. 1, "Wrecking Ball," is No. 3 while the "Now 41" compilation is at No. 4. Passion Worship's new "White Flag" set is No. 5, while Gotye's "Making Mirrors" and Fun.'s "Some Nights" are Nos. 6 and 7, respectively. The "Project X" soundtrack is No. 8, Drake's "Take Care" is No. 9 and Rihanna's "Talk That Talk" is at No. 10.
Nielsen SoundScan Building Chart
Rank LW BB 200 Artist Title
1 NEW One Direction "Up All Night" 2 2 Adele "21" 3 1 Bruce Springsteen "Wrecking Ball" 4 3 Various Artists "Now 41" 5 NEW Passion Worship "White Flag" 6 16 Gotye "Making Mirrors" 7 13 fun. "Some Nights" 8 12 Soundtrack "Project X" 9 7 Drake "Take Care" 10 17 Rihanna "Talk That Talk"
The Building Chart reflects the first four days (Monday through Thursday) of SoundScan's tracking week (which ends Sunday) as reported by six major merchants: iTunes, Trans World Entertainment, Best Buy, Starbucks, Target and Anderson Merchandisers. Billboard estimates that they make up about 85% of all U.S. album sales.

ONE Direction (sorry) is just total late 90s boy band gunk/sh*t lol. Dated, fly by night..NOT quality music with any kind of longevity. Mainly frontloaded for the wrong reasons. Cant wait for Adele to tie Purple Rain and Sat. Night Fever, then have MDNA hit #1 (then eventually Adele return back for many many weeks)

How do we think The Hunger Games soundtrack will perform? The movie opens this Friday. I guess the soundtrack will do decently, but not on the level of the movie itself (kinda like Twilight).

Crazy to see 21 on top a year ago, and, possibly, on top again a year later.

I'm going to go on a limb and say it'll do well. Soundtracks haven't done well other than Glee in years. Does anyone have a list of movie soundtracks or scores to sell more than 500k in the last ten years? Anyway, I feel like some effort has gone into it with the original track listing with some pretty big names by acts that typically sell well. Whether those fans will buy it is a question but I think the potential is there as is the right formula.
