I think STIUTK has a chance at #1 if they cover it on Glee, which of course would be awesome.

If Kelly can somehow hang on to the tiniest of gains she might sneak in a week at #1 on Radio Songs. Fun is coming up fast, though.

Where is Carly Rae??? "Call Me Maybe" is already huge on iTunes, radio needs to stop being so hesitant to add these surefire smashes everyone loves.

It's funny they weren't the least bit hesitant to play the new boy bands.

It's funny they weren't the least bit hesitant to play the new boy bands. Perhaps they came to an "Anything Goes!" mentality in having playlists represented by more than just a select handful of artists featuring on each other's tracks, so decided "Forget it, add the first few boy bands you can find!" ;) Namaste, lisping HIBISCUS

Don't kid yourself about not being hesitant with boy-bands. Radio programmers are ENORMOUSLY weary of that image. They really felt burned (by advertisers pulling back) after the last two boy-band bubbles. Traditionally what happens is that boy-bands get back into favor with radio via UN-boyband sounding tracks (Quit Playing Games with my Heart - a very acoustic sound that worked in the late 90s post grunge landscape); OneDirection's song sounds like Pink could have released it; The Wanted's song is undefined but slightly offbeat. What happens then is that the boy-bands take a hold on playlists, start to multiply (see O-Town and Five) and their material starts to skew a little younger, killing the trend. Top 40 likes to be hip, but not Tweeny.
Carly Rae is catchy, but is probably perceived by PDs as another teen girl act. We'll see if the scene changes.
Also, don't be fooled by the old "If its a huge iTunes hit, why isn't radio listening?" bit. Radio hasn't cared about sales for decades. They look at it as apples to oranges with what they do. Their format-specific research is much more precise.

This is definitely ¨different times¨. If this had been pre 2008-9, then Drake's TK would be at the top and would have reached #1 in the Hot 100.
Such a shame, as that song is suave and beautiful.

Yeah it sucks that there's not much variety on the Hot 100's top songs anymore, now its completely dominated by Electro/ Dance Pop music, apart from Adele and Fun. 2009 is when Dance Music started to take over, before then there was a nice variety of songs hitting #1, R&B, Hip Hop, Pop, Rock, Reggae. Hopefully music can get back there soon.

Pre-2009 and for the most part of the 2000's, you'd be lucky if ONE dance song made the Hot 100 in any capacity. Everything was mostly urban-based and most pop stars changed their sound to fit that. I'm so glad we are past that... That was a long 9 year stretch of BAD music.

There's a lot of variety.
Just because an urban song hasn't hit number one since "Black and Yellow" it doesn't mean many haven't crowded the top 10.

as someone who started regularly following the Hot 100 in 2004 and who doesn't particularly care for most hip-hop/rap, I shudder to think what the Hot 100 (especially the top spot) would look like today if the trends of 2002-2005 were still going strong.
- Tyga - "Rack City" - 5 weeks at No. 1 - Wiz Khalifa & Snoop Dogg ft. Bruno Mars - "Young, Wild, & Free" - 4 weeks at No. 1 - Drake ft. Rihanna - "Take Care" - 6 weeks at No. 1 - Usher - "Climax" - 8 weeks at No. 1 - 2012 American Idol Winner - "Coronation Song" - 1 week at No. 1 - Usher - "Climax" - 6 more weeks at No. 1
I'll take the likes of "We Are Young" and "What Doesn't Kill You" over gems like "Slow Motion" or "Lean Back" anyday.

It's clearly an exceptional song, but a complete anomaly in today's pop market. Same goes for EVERYTHING Adele.

That's a lot of anomalies. Adele, Pumped Up Kicks, Somebody I Used To Know, We Are Young...
Once is anomaly, twice is a coincidence, three times is a pattern.

There is a very clear trend, I agree. Refusing to acknowledge it just to complain about everything else in the pop market is silly.

2002 - 2005 was the GREATEST period of NO VARIETY the Hot 100 has ever had in 54 years. The tsunami of Hip-Hop and r&b flavored songs in the top 40 was unrelenting. Even if you LOVE that format, you must see that too much of anything just gets stale.
I would have been interested to see if the Hip Hop stranglehold would have still happened if CD singles had been available the whole time for every song. Seems to me it was an airplay-audience kinda phenomenon.
