I miss when slow midtempo R&B jam topped the chart. I know it's soo mid 2000s. I think the last one was Rihanna's Take Bow.

If only a couple of active rock songs were to chart on the billboard hot 100 right now.

I think for every trend in the past 15 years all started with one song that just came out with a fury. For example: Boy Band/Pop Princess- Hit Me Baby One More Time started the trend (99-01) Rap/Urban Influence (02-05) In Da Club Urban/Dance aka Timbaland Era Era (06-07) Promiscuous Electro Dance (09-11) Just Dance
Of course as mentioned above, there were several songs that were considered "ahead of their time" or tracks that don't necessarily fit the trend that was going on at the time such as Toxic and Complicated. I felt that the trend that we currently had for the past two years evolved slowly from urban music. But it's funny to see that Urban Music evolved from the backlash of boy band/pop princess.

So now we started some alternative trend? 'Cause Adele, Gotye, fun., Florence & The Machine, Coldplay, etc., they aren't electro dance.

Loved to see Florence rebound so strongly this week. Hopefully the upward trajectory continues, and she catches on in the US!

Electro Dance (09-11) Just Dance There were so many HUGE hits in the same vein as "Just Dance" already in 2008- Timbaland's "The Way I Are," Rihanna's "Disturbia," Ne-Yo's "Closer," Chris Brown's "Forever," etc. People were already saying that dance-leaning Pop was getting big before "Just Dance." It was an evolution as many said. I think it started around the time of Nelly F's Loose and Justin's FS/LS. ETA: Also, I'm sorry but none of these songs are electro! They're Pop songs with dance aspects and some synths.

I'm laughing at Lady Gaga getting all the credit. I am more inclined to give it to Britney with Toxic. That song was so ahead of its time - full blown electro pop (with no urban influences) in 2004. The fact that it was able to peak in the top 10 at all during that climate speaks volumes about its impact. I remember it sticking out like a sore thumb (in the best way possible). Moreover, the song was and still is a standard bearer of the genre - many producers strive to make a hit in the same vein.

Where has Lady Gaga gotten all the credit? If anything, the above posts have had some incredibly diverse opinions on how the sea change from Hip Hop dominance to dance on the Hot 100.
I stand by 'Hollaback Girl' changing the game, but I'll admit that Timbaland did a huge part in the transformation of CHR and Rhythmic with things like 'The Way I Are' and then 'Apologize'. Simply would have been overlooked in 2004.

There are lots of great songs out there that is ignored by radio, but Rihanna can be on the radio about 5 to 6 times in 2 hours, if all the songs she's on is played. I just don't get it.

I think "Everytime We Touch" and "Don't Stop The Music" catalyzed the shift to electro/dance. Especially when "Hate That I Love You" was chosen as the US single and DSTM ended up being the much bigger hit.

Why do people always look for the "beginning" of the dance trend like it started with one song? I swear it sounds like this every time..
"It started with Just Dance" "No it started with Disturbia" "No it started with The Way I Are" "No it started with Promiscuous" "No it started with Hung Up" "No it started with Toxic"
Let's just go back to the beginning of time...

^LOL Seriously. And I agree that the wave of dance-pop isn't necessarily electropop. Anyhow, wasn't some of Madonna's work with Mirawis electropop?
It's often a string of hits that gets the ball rolling for radio to start giving lots of love to a particular genre.

I remember Just Dance sounded really fresh and stuck out when it first came out...electropop was common but JD set the blueprint (which it used from other songs obviously) for the use of an unchanging synth riff throughout the song that has been the basis of every other hit since then.

I honestly think that if it wasn't for Just Dance to get embraced by radio and sales as much as it was, the "electro-dance" or "dance-pop" (whatever you want to call it) would not have been as dominating as it was for the past 3-4 years. And for the other songs, if Baby One More time, In Da Club, and Promiscuous weren't as big as they were, I don't think those trends would have been so dominating in radio. It's true that 2007 and 2008 produced a bunch of hits that would classify as dance pop but I'm giving credit to Gaga and RedOne's "Just Dance" where literally almost everyone afterwards was trying to jump on that bandwagon and create a huge dance hit.

I wouldn't even say Baby One More Time started the teen pop movement at all. The Spice Girls, Hanson, the Backstreets, and *NSYNC already had that market covered. Britney brought about the teen pop blonde girls to smash on radio though.

There is definitely never one song that starts a trend. I do think you can group songs or artists together to mention the start of trends within genres. Like, to me the Timbaland years (Nelly, Timbaland, JT, others) were a transition into the contemporary pop sound that started changing with Gaga (and others). And, of course, that is only glossing over the last 5-6 years. There were tons of other trends and shifts that led to today.

Rock Around the Clock, I Want to Hold Your Hand, Billie Jean, and Smells Like Teen Spirit are all songs that started trends. Usually the elements are in place for the sea change to occur, and sometimes those songs aren't even necessarily ORIGINAL, but they are the ones that alter fashion, music trends and - maybe most important - radio programmers' perceptions of what is hot.

I disagree, but that is ok. I just think that any trend needs to have early beginnings and other songs helping it along other than just literally one song. One song may become the face of a trend (like Smells like Teen Spirit or Just Dance or BOMT) but without all that other "stuff" contributing to the trend they would have just been anomalies. I am a cultural studies person though so everything is connected to me rather than something existing in a vacuum and changing everything just by itself.

I think Pitbull' the anthem was one of the first electropop that hit the radio in 2007. Then in 2009 he brought the futuristic i know you want me' and now many artists are adding that Brazilian beat to their songs.
Singles that sound similar to I know you want me: On the floor-same drums, similar beat.. I'm glad you came-even if you hate Pitbull, you have to recognize that he inspired them, the vibe of that song reminds you of Pitbull. Tonight-by Enrique, he even copied I know you want me lyrics. Breathing-De Rulo-------the reggaeton vibe is there. Turn up the music Chris------- Take care Drake and Rihana, the bridge sounds like IKYWM Live my life Justin Bieber and FEM---sounds like OTF which sounds like IKYWM I think Pitbull's music was always ahead his time. For that reason, his old music is still played on the radio.

To me it sounds like 'On the floor' which redone sampled 'the Brazillian song 'la lambada' and that is the type of music that Pitbull has been doing since 2007. Pitbull has made house/Brazilian/reggaeton/hip hop/pop/electronic since then. The anthem is still played on the radio and it sounds really current . Also, I know you want me sounds like a Brazilian type of music but nobody was making that type of music until Pitbull made it a hit. :)

Rap/Urban Influence (02-05) In Da Club Urban was in the mainstream spotlight well before "In Da Club". I'd be most inclined to attribute the beginning of the pop-urban infusion to "I'm Real" (Murder Remix).
