So if Gotye goes to #1 next week at least fun. had 6 weeks at #1 this year with WAY. More than any other song so far this year. Not too bad for a band that was almost completely unknown outside of independant circles just a few months ago.
I don't see Gotye (or anybody else) matching that level of success any time soon.

Hence why I used the word "song" in my original post.

My point still stands though. fun.'s success relies more on the single than the album, and "STIUTK" could easily sell 3-4 million copies this year too.

The last time an alternative act replaced another alternative act on the Hot 100 was in 2000 when "Bent" replaced "Everything You Want".

I don't want to turn this into a WAY vs STIUTK battle, because I like both songs, but I highly doubt that STIUTK will sell over 300k for 6 weeks straight like WAY just did. That's what I mean.

Making an assumption that WAY will have a maximum of 5% decrease in sales next week (370,000 I think) and STIUTK got an average of 45% sales advantage over fun.'s until the end of tracking period. Then gotye should get around 537,000 downloads and 137k advantage over fun.. I think that's enough to cover up the difference in airplay(60m in favor of WAY this week). Never mind ODS, they will likely have a tie(1m or 1.1m both). Well that's my estimation.

I don't know, Bieber didn't even sell 537k downloads his big week, not so sure that Gotye will do it.
And I think if Gotye's advantage over fun. is that large, WAY will have lost much more than just 5% in sales.
JMO.

Then a 45% advantage is equal to approx. 135,000. Anyway, I'm still hoping that it will get the no. 1 spot.

Gotye just needs to sell 75k more than fun. to get #1. With the current pop bars; that isn't looking to be a problem.

Somebody That I Used to Know is #2 on On-Demand chart so that's a good factor as well, I really hope it gets the #1 this week
Rumour Has It is finally in the top 20 of iTunes, I hope the sales and airplay will rise at the same time. I'm not expecting a #1 this time, but a top 5 peak will make me happy already

I think SNL will also help. It'll only affect one day of sales but if Idol/Glee surged sales this much, a performance by the original artist should be big as well.
Also, chatoyant, Making Mirrors has sold more than Some Nights and continues to outsell. Who knows if that'll stand since fun. stands a much better chance of a successful second single than Gotye.
"We Are Young" is now at .45 compared to STIUTK.

Gotye sould re-release Making Mirrors with another hit single. He could become a superstar if he plays his cards right, we have been seriously lacking a major male artist as of late.

Which is around the last time either Matchbox Twenty or Vertical Horizon were classified as alternative acts, LOL. we have been seriously lacking a major male artist as of late. I would beg to differ.

I doubt that when Matchbox 20's new album comes out this year that they'll even make Top 50 though.

The definition and the format of "Alternative" has very much changed since those days. But they were definite Alternative hits of their time and stick out like a sore thumb when looking at other #1s from around that era.

The definition of most genres change over time. Most notably pop. What was pop 10-20 years ago (or older) would not be considered pop today

Did Vertical Horizon ever even chart on Alternative? They had three hits. "We Are" just missed the top twenty on Billboard. "Everything You Want" was top ten and "You're a God" was top twenty.

Finally "Lights" is getting airplay. I remember buying that song almost a year ago.
And when is "Dark Side" going to radio? Hopefully it is received well.

One aspect of the On-Demand chart that I don't believe has been addressed (unless I missed it)- likely fewer Glee entries on the Hot 100?

One with universal appeal who isn't the butt of every "gay" joke on 9Gag. "Gay" jokes mean he's less male? I think he was going more for lack of universal appeal meaning he's less of a major artist... The gay joke part of the comment was pretty unnecessary to making the point, although it did, of course, raise an almost-entirely different point.
