I agree , Life in Tech- you'd think a saturation point would be reached for all acts at some point. But, tell that to radio in regards to RiRi.

Very true! But after the releases of "We Found Love", "You Da One", "Take Care", "Princess of China", "Talk That Talk" were so suffocated (all were serviced to radio within five months of each other), I think the performance of YDO and TTT in particular were hampered by her ubiquity. Fortunately, it doesn't seem to have phased "Where Have You Been".

www.billboard.com/news#/news/adam-lambert-snags-first-no-1-album-on-billboard-1007130952.storyOver on the Digital Songs chart, we have a new No. 1. Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe" jumps two spots to No. 1, selling 293,000 downloads (up 25%). Jepsen performed the track on Sunday night's (May 20) 2012 Billboard Music Awards, which may have aided the song's sales bump. It also rises 9-7 on the Pop Songs airplay chart. Gotye's "Somebody That I Used to Know" (featuring Kimbra) slips 1-2 with 289,000 (down 10%) and Maroon 5's "Payphone" (featuring Wiz Khalifa) falls 2-3 with 282,000 (down 4%). Nicki Minaj's "Starships" flies 6-4 (174,000; up 15%) and fun.'s "We Are Young" (featuring Janelle Monae) holds at No. 5 (162,000; down 2%). Flo Rida's "Wild Ones" (featuring Sia) is up one slot to No. 6 (152,000; up 1%) and Justin Bieber's "Boyfriend" is down 4-7 (144,000; down 13%). One Direction's "What Makes You Beautiful" is stationary at No. 8 (141,000; down 4%), Train's "Drive By" motors up 12-9 (109,000; up 19%) and Jennifer Lopez's "Dance Again" (featuring Pitbull) is down 9-10 (107,000; up 3%). Digital track sales this past week totaled 24.95 million downloads, down less than 1% compared to last week (24.96 million) and down 2% stacked next to the comparable week of 2011 (24.28 million). Year to date track sales are at 545.30 million, up 6% compared to the same total at this point last year (511.44 million).

Darn Carly broke the 300k streak. It should start again next week, though. Billboard is so dumb sometimes. No, Billboard. She performed it Sunday night. The performance may have only contributed an extra 1-3k in sales for this week. It's next week when your crappy little awards show will benefit the song's sales.

Carly only reached #1 last Thursday on iTunes. Now that she'll have a full week at #1 she should sell 300K+ next week.

^I'm sure there were some impulse buys right after the award show (or performance itself) that contributed to this week's total. But yeah next week will see the bigger impact, more likely.

Carly Rae Jepsen Jumps to No. 2 on Hot 100, Gotye Still No. 1by Gary Trust, N.Y. | May 23, 2012 1:45 EDT Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe" dials up the top spot on the Digital Songs chart in its 13th week while inching to No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 with top Digital and Airplay Gainer honors. Gotye's "Somebody That I Used to Know," featuring Kimbra, meanwhile, spends a sixth week at No. 1 on the Hot 100. As it rises 4-2 on the Hot 100, "Maybe" moves to the top of Digital Songs (3-1) with a 25% increase to 293,000 downloads sold, according to Nielsen SoundScan. On Radio Songs, the cut bounces 12-9 with a 22% gain to 74 million all-format audience impressions in the May 16-22 tracking week, according to Nielsen BDS. "Maybe" holds at No. 3 on On-Demand Songs with 989,000 on-demand streams (down 2%), according to BDS. Carly Rae Jepsen and More Billboard Music Awards Highlights With her Digital Songs coronation, Jepsen is the first woman to send a first entry to No. 1 on the chart since Ke$ha reigned for six weeks beginning Jan. 2, 2010, with "TiK ToK." Prior to Ke$ha, Lady Gaga had been the last female rookie to lead on a first try when "Just Dance" (featuring Colby O'Donis) began a four-week rule the week of Jan. 10, 2009. Mission, British Columbia, native Jepsen sent "Maybe" No. 1 on the Billboard Canadian Hot 100 and the Canadian Hot Digital Songs chart for four weeks each earlier this year. With Jepsen having performed "Maybe" Sunday night (May 20) on the 2012 Billboard Music Awards, broadcast on ABC, the exposure should aid the song's continued retail and radio growth next week. Fellow BBMA performers, including Justin Bieber, Carrie Underwood and Usher, could also see gains on next week's charts with their latest titles following their appearances on the festivities. As Jepsen jumps to No. 2, Gotye's "Somebody" remains atop the Hot 100 for a sixth week and crowns Radio Songs with a 2-1 climb (137 million, up 4%). Fueling its advance on the chart, the song concurrently reaches No. 1 on the Pop Songs and Adult Pop Songs airplay tallies. It remains in charge of Alternative Songs for a whopping 12th frame and Dance/Mix Show Airplay for a third. As "Maybe" takes over at No. 1, "Somebody" drops 1-2 on Digital Songs (289,000, down 10%), while staying atop On-Demand Songs (1.2 million, down 8%) for a fifth week. Maroon 5's "Payphone," featuring Wiz Khalifa, slips 2-3 on the Hot 100, pushing 10-6 on Radio Songs (78 million, up 16%) and again bulleting at No. 2 on On-Demand Songs (1 million, up 1%). On Digital Songs, the song falls 2-3 (282,000, down 4%). Fun.'s "We Are Young," featuring Janelle Monae, descends 3-4 after logging six weeks atop the Hot 100 in March and April, while Nicki Minaj's "Starships" sails back to its No. 5 peak to-date from No. 6 in its 14th week. "Starships" lifts 5-4 on Digital Songs (174,000, up 15%), holds at No. 5 on Radio Songs (99 million, up 4%) and stays at No. 7 on On-Demand Songs (690,000, down 4%). Flo Rida's "Wild Ones," featuring Sia, dips 5-6 on the Hot 100, while the songs at Nos. 7 through 10 retain their ranks from last week: One Direction's former No. 4 hit "What Makes You Beautiful" (No. 7); the Wanted's No. 3-peaking "Glad You Came" (No. 8); Justin Bieber's "Boyfriend," which reached No. 2 (No. 9 this week); and, Train's "Drive By" (No. 10). Check billboard.com tomorrow (May 24), when all rankings, including the Hot 100 and On-Demand Songs in their entirety and Digital Songs and Radio Songs, will be refreshed, as they are each Thursday. Billboard's statement is perfect.

Except Adele had a huge #1 smash single at the time, 2 previous #1 smashes, a huge multi-platinum #1 smash album, Grammys was way more viewed than the BBMAs, Adele got to perform AND receive multiple awards, including the 3 most coveted Grammys. Adele had WAY more going for her than Carly Rae.

I'm surprised no female debut has topped the digital chart since Kesha. But I guess last year's breakout smash-er was on her 2nd album.
So We Are Young keeps its weeks-at-300k record, but Somebody has the 400k record.

Billboard's statement is perfect. A completely different situation. Adele. Grammys. Top Selling Album of 2011. Six (?) awards. Carly Rae Jepsen. Billboard Music Awards. ( ) Still on the increase in sales. No awards. I have no doubt in my mind that CMM only saw an increase a few thousand before the tracking period ended. Barely noteable IMO.

And the difference between her and Gotye ended being just a few thousand. If the BMA performance netted her a mere 5,000 sales would have meant without it she'd have been #2 on digital. So I'd say it's notable.

Week Ending May 20, 2012. Songs: J.Lo’s Song SputtersBy Paul Grein | Chart Watch – 12 minutes ago This isn't what Jennifer Lopez wants to hear as she comes down from the high of the two-hour season finale of American Idol (and as she weighs the decision of whether to re-sign for a third season with the hit show), but her current single seems to be running out of gas on the Hot 100. "Dance Again," featuring Pitbull, drops from #17 to #19 in its seventh week. Singles often move up and down, but since J.Lo's twice-weekly Idol visibility is coming to an end, at least for this season, it's starting to look like #17 will be this record's peak. By contrast, "On The Floor," J.Lo's 2011 collaboration with Pitbull, logged 15 weeks in the top 10, peaking at #3. I don't think "Dance Again" is as striking as "On The Floor." As Randy Jackson might say, "This one was just OK for me." Pitbull's own smash "Back In Time" sprints over "Dance Again" on the Hot 100, jumping from #21 to #16 in its seventh week. "Dance Again" is doing better in digital sales than in radio airplay. The song has been listed in the top 10 on Hot Digital Songs for the past two weeks. It dips from #9 to #10 this week, though its sales actually increase slightly, from 103K to 107K. J.Lo, as ever, seems to be moving on. She performed "Follow The Leader," a collabo with the hot Puerto Rican duo Wisin & Yandel, on the Idol finale. The recording has been released as a single. Nine Donna Summer songs enter Hot Digital Songs in the wake of her death last week. The Oscar-winning "Last Dance" leads the way, with sales of 38K, almost all of which transpired between her death on Thursday and the close of the tracking week on Sunday. Here are the others that rank among this week's top 200 digital hits (and their sales for the week): "On The Radio" (19K), "Hot Stuff" (16K), "She Works Hard For The Money" (16K), "Bad Girls" (13K), "Love To Love You Baby" (12K), "MacArthur Park" (11K), "Dim All The Lights" (11K) and "Heaven Knows" (10K). It stands to reason that "Last Dance" made the biggest splash in recent days of any of Summer's hits. It was Summer's signature song. It brought Summer the first of her five Grammys and allowed her to sing on the Oscar stage. "Heaven Knows" was also very special in her career. The 1979 hit featured the trio Brooklyn Dreams, which included Bruce Sudano, to whom Summer was married from 1980 until her death. Summer's 1977 techno smash "I Feel Love" sold 9K this week, not quite enough to qualify for the 200-deep Hot Digital Songs list. (The minimum number needed this week was a shade over 10K). Now, let's dish: Summer's biggest hits "back in the day" that didn't sell enough digital copies this week to show up on Hot Digital Songs or Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Digital Songs charts are "No More Tears (Enough Is Enough) with Barbra Streisand, "The Wanderer," "Love Is In Control (Finger On The Trigger)" and "This Time I Know It's For Real." I guess these four songs are, by definition, the B hits. "Somebody That I Used To Know" by Gotye featuring Kimbra holds at #1 for the sixth week. This equals the run of the hit that immediately preceded it at #1: "We Are Young" by fun. featuring Janelle Monae. This is the first time in nearly two years that back-to-back #1 hits have each had six or more weeks on top. This last happened in the summer of 2010 with "California Gurls" by Katy Perry featuring Snoop Dogg (six weeks) and "Love The Way You Lie" by Eminem featuring Rihanna (seven weeks). Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe" jumps from #4 to #2 in its 13th week on the chart. It stands a very good chance of hitting #1. It jumps to #1 this week on Hot Digital Songs. (You know a song is smash when a quickie knock-off version makes the digital sales chart. A version of "Call Me Maybe" by an act called Here's My Number sold 14K copies this week, down from 18K last week. Which begs the question: Were those buyers confused and thought they were buying Jepsen's version? Are they budding Jepsen "completeists"? Or were they just curious to hear how it might differ from Jepsen's hit? Nicki Minaj's "Starships" jumps from #6 to #5 in its 14th week on the chart. This equals its highest ranking to date. The song was featured last week on Glee, which probably helped a little, though the song was already a smash hit. It has been in the top 10 for its entire 14-week run. One more week in the top 10 (which is pretty much a foregone conclusion) and it ties the mark set by Minaj's 2011 smash "Super Bass." (The Glee version of "Starships" sold 18K copies this week.) Here's the low-down on this week's top 10 songs. The Top Five: "Somebody That I Used To Know" by Gotye featuring Kimbra holds at #1 for the sixth week in its 20th week on the chart. This is its 12th week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #2 (289K)… Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe" jumps from #4 to #2 in its 13th week on the chart. This is its eighth week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #1 (293K)… "Payphone" by Maroon 5 featuring Wiz Khalifa dips from #2 to #3 in its fifth week on the chart. It has been in the top three the entire time. Digital sales rank: #3 (282K)… "We Are Young" by fun. featuring Janelle Monae dips from #3 to #4 in its 22nd week on the chart. This is the 15th week in the top 10 for the former #1 song. Digital sales rank: #5 (162K)… Nicki Minaj's "Starships" inches up from #6 to #5 in its 14th week on the chart. This equals its highest ranking to date. It has been in the top 10 the entire time. Digital sales rank: #4 (174K). The Second Five: "Wild Ones" by Flo Rida featuring Sia dips from #5 to #6 in its 20th week on the chart. This is its 10th week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #6 (152K)…One Direction's "What Makes You Beautiful" holds at #7 for the second week in its 14th week on the chart. This is its eighth week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #8 (141K)…The Wanted's "Glad You Came" holds at #8 for the second week in its 19th week on the chart. This is its 13th week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #12 (93K) … Justin Bieber's "Boyfriend" holds at #9 for the second week in its eighth week on the chart. It has been in the top 10 the entire time. Digital sales rank: #7 (144K)…Train's "Drive By" holds at #10 for the second week in its 19th week on the chart. Digital sales rank: #9 (109K). The title of Calvin Harris' current hit, "Feels So Close," is very appropriate. The song has hovered between #11 and #15 for nine straight weeks without ever squeaking into the top 10. (This week is its fourth non-consecutive week at #12.) It really must feel "so close." Three records are streaking toward the top 10. I already told you about Pitbull's "Back In Time," which jumps from 21 to #16 in its seventh week. Rihanna's "Where Have You Been" jumps from #18 to #13 in its fifth week. To celebrate, we'll have a lot of summer-themed blogs. My contribution is a Chart Watch Extra in which I tell you the biggest #1 hit of summers past, from 2011 working backwards to 1955. These are the songs that you heard over and over at the beach or on vacation or on that endless ride to Grandma's house. The image here is a tip-off to the biggest song of the summer of 1966, the Lovin' Spoonful's immortal "Summer In The City." Check it out tomorrow. Source

Well then, she'll probably get the T-Mobile Best New Artist award the AMAs.

Paul Grein's excessive use of the verb "jumps" bugs the crap out of me. Ellie! Leave it to the US to wait until mid-2012 to catch on to an early 2010 song.

(Expect a big jump next week following Rihanna's performance of the song on the Idol finale.) Usher's "Scream" leaps from #25 to #15 in its fourth week. Agh! I was really hoping for Calvin to log a week in the top 10! From the looks of it, I think this was its last chance. It dropped today in airplay and has been hovering around 30 on iTunes. Rihanna and Usher's airplay and sales are already higher than him.

I honestly don't think BBA made a big difference in the trajectory of Carly's song. Billboard wishes it did.
