I don't know if anyone has noticed yet but one of our topics in the Music News forum was removed a week ago. That followed a warning from ProBoards that they had been contacted by a representative from Soundscan who saw the topic had been gathering information that is technically owned by Soundscan and thus considered to be copyright. ProBoards or Pulse does not have permission to gather and post this information and thus it is against rules and regulations to have it. The Rules have been updated to include this in addition to our previous stance on mp3s. Therefore, posting data from Soundscan is now against Pulse rules and will be taken seriously.
Data from soundscan will only allowed to be discussed if it is directly given from a source. The source MUST be a reputable one and NOT from a blog or another message board. This means ukmix, for example, cannot be given as a source but an article posted on a site like Billboard can. Also, direct links to outside sources that gather Soundscan information will not be allowed either, unless it is legal. This will be treated the same way as a link to an illegally posted mp3 website.
Anyone who doesn't follow the above guidelines will be warned with the possibility of a suspension or permanent ban. Just like our rule regarding mp3s, this is something that will be taken seriously because it not only risks yourselves but also the continuation of Pulse.

Thank you for letting us know.
I'm wondering whether my recent posts in the 2012 YTD thread, which have used rounded data (to the nearest thousand in one case, and to the nearest 500 in another) are acceptable, or if I should stop updating these, as well.
Also, what about totals that we have calculated using a compilation of SoundScan data from sources (Billboard, etc), but that were never actually printed in these sources?

I'm wondering if this affects my Weekly Top 10 Digital Sales thread.I mean, it's just the top 10's, which is what Billboard posts anyway. (And I'd rather not have to edit all the old posts and round everything off.)

As of now, it's Soundscan data. There are two different sources for weekly sales, if I'm correct. One of them uses Soundscan data and the other doesn't. Which means that soundscan also isn't necessarily the better source anyway but it's the one used by most people in the industry, I believe.
I'm going to see what some of the other mods/admins have to say about this as well because I admit I don't know a whole lot about it as a whole anyway. Most of what I have to add would just be a guess.
I would say if it's anything to do with information that came from soundscan, it might be best to avoid using that but we'll see what others have to say as well. Ideally, I'd like to be able to forward questions themselves to someone from soundscan to see what is allowed and what isn't. At least with mp3s, it's easy to know what is and isn't permissible. This is a bit more difficult because in theory, only numbers from soundscan wouldn't be allowed but suspected numbers from other means such as using certification shipments wouldn't be included because those aren't through Soundscan. But at the same time, they themselves could be considered copyright.

I'll air on the far side of caution in the next few weeks until the guidelines are more clear.

Yeah, I'll just continue to post the round top 10 figures that the Billboard articles post. I can easily provide links to the articles if I have to.

Which thread was it? Upon reading, I thought it would be the Ultimate Diva Soundscan thread, but that's still up.

I think it was the Soundscan era all time best selling albums thread.

How much is a membership? Start a fundraiser and then make the board private :)

Is there something going on with the Mediabase charts? I can only access the Top 40 edition.

Given the warnings from Soundscan, I would like to know if this will affect the weekly Canadian Hot 100 threads and therefore posts of the entire chart will no longer be permitted in the Canadian Charts forum of this website.
There are at least three weeks' worth of charts that have not yet been posted - I will proceed to post theme until further notice is received that this will no longer be allowed.

^ SoundScan doesn't control those charts; Billboard does. Go for it.

I inquired about it several years ago. It was several thousand dollars a year back then, and may be more than that now. Seriously.

Maybe it's because we haven't really issued official warnings for it but seriously you guys, NO SOUNDSCAN NUMBERS. Stop posting exact numbers and then leaving it up to the mods to have to go in and edit it out. It takes a millisecond to round the numbers and no one will doubt your accuracy, I swear.

It could just be Billboard further trying to boycott any form of rock or alt from entering the charts by trying to keep the public ignorant of any upcomming rock/Alt releases? I'm just saying....

This "Soundscan Data" thread is all but dead.
There is no discussion whatsoever about it and it has't seen a useful feedback or thought for ages now...
In my opinion, frankly we don't need to keep this particular thread as a sticky subject making it appear on each and every page we open. Just relegate it into an ordinary thread and phase it out...
If it is a mega important for the board, add a clear paragraph about the matter in "Pulse Music Board Rules & Guidelines" page as a separate policy item. That way it would have served its purpose.
But as nobody is responding to this particular subject anymore, it is time to say "good riddance" to this Soundscan Data thread.

It's stickied because it's very important information, and it's imperative that board members do not post SoundScan data otherwise Pulse could get in big trouble..

But such a rule can be clearly conveyed to all users in a prominent way in the "Pulse Music Board Rules & Guidelines" area that every user has to read and abide by. We don't need a separate discussion thread for that.
If that is not enough, users can be informed systematically through their mail inboxes.

The Soundscan lawyers could check out this thread and see that a policy is in place and leave Pulse alone. Where it is placed now, it is seen by everyone , including new members as well as Soundscan lawyers
It is in the Rules and Guidelines already but not everyone reads them.

It's an incredibly serious matter as posting of the Soundscan data could put Pulse in jeopardy and could be shut down permanently. It's stickied because it's very important information, and it's imperative that board members do not post SoundScan data otherwise Pulse could get in big trouble.. Perhaps the title of this thread could be updated to say something like Important: Soundscan Data Policy, for example, with the content of the initial post remaining the same.
