This consoles me greatly though... hopefully it can make the top 10 at the very least! It's currently at #14 on the Hot 100 and apparently the "streaming gainer" according to Billboard.

I'm still in shock that Ellie's song is such a hit in the US, though! I love this song to bits, but I never imagined American audiences to pick up on it!

I remain confused why people care so much about these figures, which don't relate at all to Billboard.

Also, Adele, Rihanna, and Katy Perry would have all likely crossed 200m with their big hits had they been charting after Mediabase's recent recalculation that boosted everyone's numbers by about 30%.

Because Billboard is by far the dominant chart company in the US.

I see "regular" people and news outlets reference Billboard (or sometimes Soundscan, but that's not airplay related) when notable chart achievements occur, but I've never once in my life seen Mediabase numbers referenced anywhere except a charts message board.

Considering how the re-calculation a few months ago resulted in songs gaining something like 20-30m+ impressions in a single day it's hard for me to take Mediabase seriously as any sort of "chart of record."

^We know this. But mediabase figures are still posted in here daily and readers comment on them, so they are clearly of interest. To say they aren't valid because Billboard doesn't use them, or because they are a different company is a bit unrealistic.

We use these as a gauge of a song's popularity, just as we do Billboard. I'm sure I'm not the only one who hasn't seen the 200-mark threshhold crossed on Mediabase, inflated or not, and there's naturally going to be discussion when that possibility arises.

That's why I will never be consoled about Katy Perry's "The One That Got Away" not reaching #1 on Billboard. Some posters were happy it reached #1 on Mediabase CHR/Pop, but I acknowledge that that doesn't carry as much weight.

It's a very accurate base point for how the song is doing. BDS is always lower but its the same for everyone. The Mediabase charts do have meaning, which is why you are comenting on it. ;)

That's what I mean about Mediabase being kind of pointless here. Gotye could tie her number but in reality Mariah would have been getting far more airplay at the time.

I think tracking Mediabase is totally valid -- I just thinking caring about "records" and "thresholds" on it are kind of silly since even within this one company they've been so inconsistent over the years.

BDS is the same way, though. Rules and panels and AI reconstruction happens all of the time. It's not just Mediabase. Hell, look how much Billboard has changed their Hot 100 rules over the past five years. Records that are currently held by Taylor Swift and the Glee Cast will most likely never be broken due to new rules. They're just as inconsistent as Mediabase, so that argument is invalid. It's okay to prefer Billboard over Mediabase, but at least bring some stronger points to the table if you're trying to discredit one or the other.

Oy. I'm not trying to discredit Mediabase. I feel like this happens a lot on this board -- I make one point and somehow people think I'm saying something completely different.

Mediabase is great. The numbers are great to know. They are a great way to see relative performance. I'm not trying to discredit them at all.

The ONLY thing I think is silly is caring about things like "the 200m threshold" and then comparing it to other songs as some sort of record -- Gotye is not necessarily any bigger of an airplay hit than all the songs that were peaking in the 160-170 range over the past few years, it's just benefitting from a rather dramatic change in how they calculate audience impressions that boosted everyone across the board. So I feel like it's incredibly misleading to make that comparison.

Billboard changes all the time also, yes. The market changes all the time too. You can never have super accurate pure comparisons because of that. And as far as I can tell, Billboard typically will add some note if a new "record" is influenced by a change in methodology (hence seeing statements like "during the digital era" or "since Soundscan was introduced" or "since the airplay panel was expanded in 1998" often accompanying news articles).

If people care about this 200m thing then that's fine, but I don't understand it, because anyone following the charts the past year knows that these numbers that songs are getting are different across the board and not actually representative of some sudden shift that one day 30% more of the country started listening to the radio.

Just for the record, "We Belong Together" made 255 million on Mediabase; "Somebody That I Used To Know" wasn't even close.

I agree with Au$tin here. I don't really see how Mediabase has been so inconsistent over the years, anyway. They add or remove stations, re-calibrate the audience impressions or change the recurrent rules every now and then, but that's nothing compared to all the changes that the Hot 100 has undergone. One of the many reasons why I do prefer Mediabase is because of the continuing consistency their chart holds.

It's not like Billboard doesn't have the same problem. If I recall correctly, "Since U Been Gone" and "Tonight Tonight" are both somewhere around 2.4 million sales. Does that mean "Tonight Tonight" was as big a hit as "Since U Been Gone"? No.
