Things aren't looking so good for Dark Side. Don't judge by it's AI. It's gaining spins on HAC but losing AI there. What is HAC?

"Eyes Wide Open" was released in late 2010 in the UK and then again earlier this year. It didn't chart either time. That's the only single other than "Somebody That I Used To Know" Gotye's tried in the UK so far, but he's releasing "I Feel Better" in September.

Don't judge by it's AI. It's gaining spins on HAC but losing AI there. What is HAC? As others said, hot adult contemporary. It's one of the radio formats that make up the all-format airplay figures we see in this thread, alongside CHR/Pop, AC (adult contemporary), rhythmic, urban, urban AC, country, alternative and so on. On this site, you'll see a selection of formats that you can choose near the top of the page. Click "HAC", and you can see today's Mediabase HAC chart update there. From that, you can get an idea of the kind of music HAC stations usually spin most. Look to #12, and you'll see that on the latest update, "Dark Side" gained 31 spins and lost 0.217 million audience. Go to the pop chart, and you'll see it gained 0.444 million audience on that format today, and if you look at AC, it gained 0.006. Add those three together, and you get a gain of 0.233, which is a close approximation to the 0.218 it gained on the all-format figure in this thread today. The reason for the difference could be that "Dark Side" is also getting play on another format (though I doubt that), or because the all-format figures cover a slightly larger selection of stations than what you'd get if you added up the individual format charts. Does any of that help?

Billboard.com:.
Over on the Digital Songs chart, we have a new No. 1 as Flo Rida's "Whistle" rises 3-1 with 211,000 (up 10%). It's his first chart-topper since 2009's "Right Round" spent six weeks atop the list. Flo bumps last week's No. 1, Katy Perry's "Wide Awake," down to No. 3 with 170,000 (down 17%).
Jason Aldean's new single "Take a Little Ride" climbs in at No. 2 with 189,000 -- the largest debut sales week ever for a digital song by a male country artist. It beats Scotty McCreery's debut with "Love You This Big" a little over a year ago, when it launched with 171,000.
Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe" slips 2-4 (164,000; down 19%), Ellie Goulding's "Lights" rises 6-5 (134,000; down 11%) and Pink's "Blow Me (One Last Kiss)" descends 4-6 (just under 134,000; down 22%).
Maroon 5's "Payphone" (featuring Wiz Khalifa) falls 5-7 (131,000; down 15%) while fun.'s "Some Nights" jumps into the top 10, rising 11-8, with 120,000 (up 16%). David Guetta's "Titanium" (featuring Sia) drops 7-9 (116,000; down 8%) and Cher Lloyd's "Want U Back" dips 9-10 (110,000; down 4%).
Right outside the top 10, No Doubt's new single "Settle Down" arrives at No. 13 with 87,000 downloads. How long has it been since No Doubt released a new single? So long that the group had never previously charted on the nearly eight-year-old Digital Songs chart. The Digital Songs tally launched in late 2004 -- months after the group's last single, 2003's "It's My Life," completed its run on Billboard's charts. Digital track sales this past week totaled 24.52 million downloads, down 2% compared with last week (25.07 million) and up 2% stacked next to the comparable week of 2011 (24.06 million). Year-to-date track sales are at 773.49 million, up 6% compared with the same total at this point last year (731.03 million).

Not much needed for #1 digital song these days compared to the heydays of Gotye for example.
EDIT: Icefire was faster with this thought

It may be low compared to earlier this year, but these are "normal" numbers. They're actually up 2% from this same time last year.
I think it's mostly due to the lack of a strong hit at the moment. With "Call Me Maybe," "Somebody That I Used to Know," and "Payphone" having peaked and dying, there's no huge hits to replace them at the moment. Sure, "Whistle," "Wide Awake," and "Lights" are big, but they're not the powerhouses the other three were.

Plus fun. had the commercial, I dunno what else promo they had. Gotye's 2 huge weeks were when he did a ton of promo all at once, otherwise he wouldn't have sold nearly as much.
Carly Rae on the other hand never racked up a ton of promo, just had consistent sales, not too high, but high enough to get #1 for 8 weeks (digital sales) in a row. :O

Carly Rae Jepsen's 'Call Me Maybe' Hits Seventh Week at No. 1 on Hot 100July 25, 2012 | By Gary Trust, New YorkCarly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe" spends a seventh week at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, while Flo Rida's "Whistle" tops Hot Digital Songs and Ellie Goulding's "Lights" leads On-Demand Songs. "Maybe" continues its Hot 100 domination despite drops in airplay, sales and streaming. The song dips 2-3 on Hot 100 Airplay (117 million audience impressions, down 7%, according to Nielsen BDS), 2-4 on Hot Digital Songs (164,000 downloads sold, down 19%, according to Nielsen SoundScan) and 1-2 after five weeks atop On-Demand Songs (819,000 on-demand streams, down 4%, according to BDS).
With a seventh week at the Hot 100's summit, Jepsen calls a piece of Hot 100 history her own, as "Maybe" tallies the longest reign for a song by a woman signed to Interscope Records. (Interscope chairman - and "American Idol" mentor the last two seasons - Jimmy Iovine co-launched the label in 1990.) The single passes Lady Gaga's "Born This Way," which ruled for six weeks last year. Among all Interscope acts, the Black Eyed Peas' "I Gotta Feeling" leads with 14 weeks at No. 1 in 2009. Maroon 5's "Payphone," featuring Wiz Khalifa, holds at No. 2 on the Hot 100 for a sixth frame; it's spent all 14 of its weeks on the chart between Nos. 2 and 3. The track tops Hot 100 Airplay for a fourth frame (134 million, down 3%), while holding at No. 3 on On-Demand Songs (811,000, up 1%) and sliding 5-7 on Hot Digital Songs (131,000, down 15%). Katy Perry's "Wide Awake" remains at No. 3 on the Hot 100, taking on top Airplay Gainer honors as it lifts 5-4 on Hot 100 Airplay (111 million, up 15%). The song also gains on On-Demand Songs (6-6; 653,000, up 4%), while falling to No. 3 after a week atop Hot Digital Songs (170,000, down 17%). With the overall Hot 100 points declines of "Payphone" and "Awake" significantly lower than that of "Maybe," the tracks could compete in a tight race for No. 1 next week. Ellie Goulding's "Lights" climbs 5-4 (a new peak in its 31st week) on the Hot 100 while ascending 4-1 on On-Demand Songs with a 15% gain to 867,000 on-demand streams. The song maintains its No. 6 rank on Hot 100 Airplay (99 million, up 15%) and rises 6-5 on Hot Digital Songs (134,000, down 11%). Gotye's former eight-week No. 1 "Somebody That I Used to Know," featuring Kimbra, descends 4-5 on the Hot 100, while Flo Rida's "Whistle" pushes 7-6 with the chart's top Digital and Streaming Gainer awards. The track becomes the rapper's third No. 1 on Hot Digital Songs, where it rises 3-1 with a 10% gain to 210,000. It also passes a million in digital sales since its release. Flo Rida's debut smash "Low," featuring T-Pain, ruled Hot Digital Songs for 13 weeks in 2007-08 - the longest command in the chart's history - and "Right Round" (featuring an uncredited Ke$ha on vocals) led for six weeks in 2009. On On-Demand Songs, "Whistle" works a 16-8 vault (584,000, up 33%). It bounds 34-20 on Hot 100 Airplay (44 million, up 36%). Rounding out the Hot 100's top 10, Rihanna's "Where Have You Been" retreats 6-7; David Guetta's "Titanium," featuring Sia, holds at No. 8; Usher's "Scream" rises 10-9; and, P!nk's "Blow Me (One Last Kiss)" drops 9-10. Despite the lattermost title's 4-6 slide in its third week on Hot Digital Songs (134,000, down 22%), the first single from P!nk's sixth studio album, "The Truth About Love," due Sept. 18, charges 23-17 on Hot 100 Airplay (47 million, up 21%). Just outside the Hot 100's top tier, country star Jason Aldean nets the chart's highest new entry, as "Take a Little Ride" soars in at No. 12. The bow blasts past his previous best start, a No. 54 launch for "My Kinda Party" in 2009.The song arrives at No. 2 on Hot Digital Songs with 189,000 sold, which, as previously reported, marks the largest debut sales week for a digital song by a male country artist. (Previous record-holder Scotty McCreery's "I Love You This Big" opened with 171,000 in June 2011.) Also as previously tipped, No Doubt debuts at No. 34 on the Hot 100 with "Settle Down," which begins at No. 13 on Hot Digital Songs (87,000) and No. 65 on Hot 100 Airplay (18 million). The quartet had last appeared on the Hot 100 in 2004. The song previews No Doubt's sixth studio album, "Push and Shove" (due Sept. 25), the pop/rock/ska band's first studio effort since 2001's "Rock Steady." Check billboard.biz tomorrow (July 26), when all rankings, including the Hot 100, Hot Digital Songs, Hot 100 Airplay and On-Demand Songs, will be refreshed, as they are each Thursday. Source

No, it's just a weird record to have. Like Ellie's "record" "longest run to the top 10 without being aided by a cross-over from country for a female" I think it was.

Has there been "The highest debut by a male/female country trio"? I remember Lady Antebellum having that sort of "record" with Just a Kiss.

Same as last year. Constant 300k+ smashes first and second quarter, then not even selling 200k by the end of summer. Kesha needs to wise up and release ASAP.

With the turnover being so slow lately they really are reaching for "milestones." "Call Me Maybe" smashes lots of records this week: The longest-running number one hit of 2012 by an artist from North America! The longest-running number one hit of 2012 by a female artist that doesn't feature any male vocals! The first song by a female Canadian artist to be number one since last week! The first song in the HISTORY OF THE HOT 100 with the words "call," "me," and "maybe" in its title to log 7 weeks at number one!!!

Is Billboard really that desperate to find a new record every week just to make their article interesting? That's probably the most BS record I've seen in a while.
