This weekend we have one '70s show and two '80s shows which means once again the weekend preview will be a two-parter. We'll do the '70s show first.
"AT40: The '70s presents 10/29/1977. It's the fourth airing for this show but the first since 2009.
Five songs debuted this week: "Isn't It Time" - The Babys (#32) "It's So Easy" - Linda Ronstadt (#34) "Come Sail Away" - Styx (#35) "I Go Crazy" - Paul Davis (#37) "You Make Loving Fun" - Fleetwood Mac (#40)

Of note: Premiere deleted "Laughter In The Rain" from its' three prior airings and, 13 years later, still haven't bothered to play it, not even as an optional extra. "If You Leave Me Now" will be an optional extra while "You're Sixteen" remains in the show.
Premiere optional extras: Hour #1: "You're In My Heart" - Rod Stewart (#80; highest debut) Hour #2: "If You Leave Me Now" - Chicago (original AT40 extra) Hour #3: "We Are The Champions" - Queen (#75)

10/29/1977 - Before Grease and Saturday Night Fever, there was Star Wars, Fleetwood Mac and Barry Manilow. There was such variety as Crystal Gayle followed by Star Wars then Barry White. Shaun Cassidy, Lief Garrett, Peter Frampton and Andy Gibb were the BTS of that time.
#32 "Isn't it Time" sung by John Waite with the Babys. On the 10/27/1984 show this week John Waite is at #23 with "Missing You" solo and #49 with "Tears"
#26 Dave Mason had "We Just Disagree" later remade by Billy Dean in the 90s country.
There is a group named Brick. And the Commodores had a song named "Brick House" Too bad Brick didn't do Brick House.
Did Aerosmith release "Love in an Elevator" in the UK? Did they change it to "Love in the Lift"?
5 remakes in a row #21 Blue Bayou - Roy Orbison #20 Surfin USA - Beach Boys written by Chuck Berry. #19 Swayin to the Music - Jack Tempchin #18 Signed, Sealed and Delivered Stevie Wonder #17 We're All Alone - Written and originally done by Boz Scaggs, but Casey said it was Frankie Valli
#13 Ronnie McDowell had the King is Gone peaked there and went gold. On the country chart, Merle Haggard had "From Graceland to the Promised Land"
The fall of 1977 is as bad as the fall of 1981 (Sept and Oct) with the #1 song being "You Light of My Life" and "Endless Love". Week after week you wonder when will it drop.
On the country charts, Blue Bayou was #10. #34 Johnny Rodriguez had "Eres Tu" which in the early 70s was a song done by someone else and played on AT40 #44 The King is Gone #45 "Don't it make my Brown Eyes Blue" dropped and was a #1. #72 Ann J Morton's "Blueberry Hill". #46 "You Light Up My Life"

10/31/1981
When playing #33 Hold on Tight - ELO Casey mentioned that the vocals start out sounding like Elvis, then with some Beatles harmonies and piano sounding like Jerry Lee Lewis. I see that Jerry Lee Lewis is reported as having died today at 87.
1981 had disco dead, hard rock was making it to the pop charts. Foreigner, Journey, Triumph, Billy Squier. Soloists making breaks from their groups, such as Burton Cummings, Mary Balin, Lionel Richie, Lindsey Buckingham #55, and Stevie Nicks was dropping with Tom Petty and climbing with Don Henley. Medley were becoming popular with Hooked on Classics (#90), Stars on 45 and the Beach Boys Medley
Isn't it interesting that there are similarites between the 70s and 80s show for the week. In 10/29/77 Commodores had a song called 'Brick House' and there was a group called Brick charting. In 10/31/1981, Marty Balin had a song called "Atlanta Lady" while the Atlanta Rhythm was charting. And in 10/27/1984 Billy Ocean had Caribbean Queen but Queen did not have a song charting, but Freddie Mercury did with "Love Kills" which sounds like it would be a follow up to "Love Hurts". Wham had "Wake me up before you Go-Go" but the Go Gos were charting at that time.
Foreigner's Urgent has a sax solo in the middle, Quarterflash's "Harden my Heart" #49 & first extra, has a sax intro and solo, but they add guitar to it. We won't hear sax until Men at Work.

10/27/1984 Cyndi Lauper was bopping Through the Night with She Bop at 28 and All through the Night at 27. The Jackson were at #66 with Body & also at 84 with Torture Rebbie Jackson was at #65 with Centipede Jermaine Jackson was at #64 with Do What You Do & also at 91 with Dynamite Casey mentioned solo artists with animal names such as Cat Stevens, Dean Martin, Billy Swan, Adam Ant, Maxine Nightingale etc. and in the countdown was Corey Hart. But also at #47 and climbing was Peter Wolf. Also he didn't mention Joe Cocker.
#36 was .38 Special with 'Teacher Teacher'. debuting at #83 was Van Halen's "Hot for Teacher". Now would be a good time for the question about prior occupations of singers being teachers.
.38 Special was in the countdown. Tommy Shaw was at #42 with "Girls with Guns". Appollonia 6 was at #87 with "Sex Shooter"
Jack Wagner jumps from 88 to 81 with "All I need". His first song. I wonder if that was actually played in General Hospital in the 80s. He performed that at the Nurses' ball episode in 2013 and Rick Springfield performed Jessie's Girl there as himself in that episode. Rick Springfield was also in the top 40 this week. Around this time we also have Christopher Cross' "Think of Laura" and in 1983 General Hospital started playing Patti Austin's song "Baby Come to Me" and that hit #1. And this week in 1981 at #77 there is "General Hospit-tale" by The Afternoon Delights.
And I thought I was going crazy. @#8 was Prince "Let's Go Crazy". Then Casey played Sammy Hagar's "Your Love is Driving Me Crazy" for the LDD. During the commercial I had Sammy in my head and I looked at the chart and thought there is no Sammy Hagar there. There is Prince, did Casey play the wrong crazy song. I looked up the Cue sheet and Sammy was the LDD. Hmm. Did they place those back to back on purpose? To drive us crazy?
Casey mentioned Purple Rain soundtrack being at #1 for 13 weeks. And then that the soundtrack that spent that longest time at #1 was based on a Shakespeare play. The answer to that was given in the 1977 show. But at the 1977 show Saturday Night Fever had not been released for another few weeks. I would have thought that would be the one that would end up most weeks at #1 but Casey said that was only #1 for 24 weeks. But Westside Story was just before the Beatles and there was no competition at that time. Isn't it funny how shows in different years will have info that syncs.
KZOY on Saturday at 1pm plays the 80s B shows but they don't play the optional extras. Rewind921 plays the 80s B shows at Sat 8pm and I think they play the extras.
The second hour extra is "Hello Again" by the Cars. That album Heartbeat City contains the songs, You Might Think, Hello Again, Drive and Magic. I bought that album in 1984. It skipped so I returned it to the store and got a replacement. Then I noticed something strange and wished I had kept the original. The last song on the replacement is "Heartbeat City". But on the first album that I had that I traded in, the last song was called "Jacki", they were the same song. And to prove I'm not crazy, the wikipedia article said ""Heartbeat City" is titled "Jacki" on the inner sleeve of early US vinyl pressings, though the title is listed (correctly) as "Heartbeat City" on the label. " It's upsetting since if I had kept the original one, that would be a rare mistake printing and worth alot.

If you're hoping the Casey Christmas specials will start this weekend. Unfortunately, it won't start this week. With that said, only one '80s show and two '70s shows so once again the weekend preview will be a two-parter and we'll start with the '80s first. "AT40: The '80s" this week presents 11/9/1985. Here is an earlier repost: Three songs debuted this week: "Party All The Time" - Eddie Murphy (#35) "Running Up That Hill" - Kate Bush (#39) "Say You Say Me" - Lionel Richie (#40; Hot 100 Debut) Three songs fell out of the Top 40 this week: "Money For Nothing" - Dire Straits (#24) "Dancing In The Street" - Mick Jagger & David Bowie (#29) "Cherish" - Kool & The Gang (#38) Biggest Mover: "Broken Wings" - Mr. Mister (#20 to #11) Biggest Dropper: "I'm Goin' Down" - Bruce Springsteen (#19 to #32) Original extras: "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" - Gordon Lightfoot Long Distance Dedications: "Boy In The Box" - Corey Hart (#27 this week) "Faithfully" - Journey Premiere optional extras: Hour #1: "You're A Friend of Mine" - Jackson Browne & Clarence Clemons (#52) Hour #2: "Walk Of Life" - Dire Straits (#45) Hour #3: "Tarzan Boy" - Baltimora (#64) Hour #4: "Small Town" - John Cougar Mellencamp (#42) BTW this will be a rarity for AT40 fans. That a song ("Running Up That Hill") is featured on both Casey and Ryan's AT40 (both CHR and Hot AC) at the same time. We may never see it happen again. The '70s preview is coming up soon.

10/30/1971 One Tin Soldier (The Legend of Billy Jack) Great song and Great movie and great message. And #9 is Peace Train and #6 is Imagine. Anti-war and peace were on their minds then.
Alot of songs I'm not familiar with or have not heard and didn't know the name or group.
And alot of confusion here. At #12 Al Green says he is tired of being alone but at #11 Donny Osmond tells the girl to go away.
Has the question been asked: What week had the most songs with a number in the title. This week has #83 Gimme Some Lovin, Part 1 #76 Theme for "Summer of 42" #59 MacArthur Park (Park II) Four Tops. How is that different from Donna Summer's. #39 One Tin Soldier #38 Two Divided By Love #35 Questions 67 & 68 #26 One Fine Morning

11/9/1985 introducing ABC's song Casey mentioned the Album 'How to be a Zillionaire'. Casey said the only Zillionaire he knows is Dick Clark.
Casey mentioned Live Aid. Live Aid was to our generation what Woodstock was to boomers. But we got to see Live Aid Live on TV from the USA and the UK. Listening to this music brings back memories of watching it live that day.
At #5 Starship builds this city then at #4 Glenn Frey says we belong to this city.
The best songs of this time was from Simple Minds, Mister Mister, A-Ha and Tears for Fears

11/3/1979 Disco was alive but we know that it's death is imminent to be replaced by real rock. The Village People debuted at #90 with Ready for the 80's. No, they weren't.
Country women on the pop charts
#100 Barbara Mandrell #39 Crystal Gayle #21 Anne Murray #20 Jennifer Warnes - I Know a Heartache When I see one.
For rock Triumph entered at 92, AC/DC peaks at 69, Who is at 45, John Cougar at 44, Journey, The Knack, Foreigner, STYX in the top 40
AT 98 was Touch Me When We're Dancing by Bama. Never heard this version. That is the same song that the Carpenters did in 1981
Last week in the 1984 show Casey had the question of solo artists with animal names. I don't know his list of 15. Here is the solo singer Kermit the Frog. And also at #44 is John Cougar.
Tusk is a strange song that I don't know what it means. Drums and a marching band.
When they used questions on the air, they sent the person a complementary AT40 yearbook. I want one.
Is that the longest Note? Donna Summer in Dim all the Lights

Well, it's here. Premiere is now offering the Casey holiday specials as alternate programming so no more "B" shows from either the '70s or '80s until New Year's weekend at least. 11/18/1972
Titles from songs you will hear on the 80s show but different songs. #100 "You Can do Magic". #95 "Celebration".
#67 In Heaven There is No Beer - Clean Living. With a title like that, I'll have to look that up.
#65 Wedding Song (There is Love) by Petula Clark. I haven't heard this one. I know Paul Stukey's version
#14 My -Ding a ling - Chuck Berry. I have that single & I don't know why.
#13 If you don't know me by Now - Walter Melvin & the Blue Notes. made famous in 1989 by Simply Red. Casey wasn't doing the show then but I wonder if he had would he have said "I remember that song from 1972"
#12 Garden Party - Rick Nelson There is quite a back story on that one.
#9 Witchy Woman - Eagles. Made famous by Seinfeld
#8 Convention 72. We need someone to prepare a song like that today.
#7 Freddie's Dead (Theme from Superfly) - Curtis Mayfield You mean it is not from The Nightmare on Elm Street. And at #83 is "Superfly" by Curtis Mayfield
#6 Papa Was a Rollin' Stone - Temptations. Group's name in a song by someone else. (Other than "Who" or "M") Joe Diffie's "Bigger than the Beatles".
#1 I can See Clearly Now - Johnny Nash. Made famous by a window cleaner commercial

"AT40: The '70s" this week presents 11/18/1972. Here is a prior repost: ... Premiere optional extras ... Hour #2: "Dancing In The Moonlight" - King Harvest (#71) ... Unlike the true-to-the-original-monaural 2013 airing, this was a Ken Martin "mono2stereo" conversion and, as usual, it was magnificent.
However, for that "Dancing In The Moonlight" optional extra, Premiere used a mono version. Maybe it's hard to find a good stereo copy. The only CD copy I have is on the 'AM Top Twenty' disc in the Time-Life Sounds Of The Seventies series and, sure enough, it's mono.
Since I have the stereo version on one of those very-long-playing Ronco LPs called 'Good Vibrations' from 1972, I thought that was odd. If the stereo master was lost somewhere along the way, hopefully it will resurface someday. It's a good song.

11/20/1976 Alot of songs were shortened. The top 35 were solid classics. With a bunch of funk below. Play that Funky Music. #97 Get The Funk out Ma Face - Brothers Johnson, #52 Shake Your Rump to the Funk - Bar Kays #93 9,999,999 Tears by Dickey Lee. That was an answer to the trivia question of the largest number in a song title, until Alice Cooper's Billion Dollar Babies. But it is the answer for the highest digital number. #91 Slow Dancing - Funky Kings was remade a year later by Johnny Rivers. #79 Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da by the Beatles debuts. What was the occasion for that. #78 Saturday Night - Earth Wind and Fire. There is a trivia question in the show about days of the week that hit number 1. but not this song, but the one by Bay City Rollers with this name. #68 Baby Boy - Mary Kay Place (As Loretta Hagers) What is that credit about? #43 That'll Be the Day - Linda Ronstadt a Buddy Holly song. She is the remake queen #35 You Are My Starship - Norman Connor is on the label because he arranged the session and brought the musicians together and played drums, but it was written and sung by Michael Henderson. #26 Love Ballad - LTD - Love Togetherness Devotion
#10 10 10 Do You Feel by Frampton. Wonder if that has happened at other times, where this week, last week and weeks on are the same.
Muskrat Love and Disco Duck back to back Rock acts with rare top 40 hits Alice Cooper, Kiss, Blue Oyster Cult, Boston, Peter Frampton

11/24/79 #85 I Wanna Be Your Lover by Prince is the optional extra. They should also have used #65 Video Killed the Radio Star - The Buggles or #63 Rapper's Delight - Sugar Hill Gang. Those are historically significant. The first song played on MTV and the first rap song.
Another chart with a group whose name is in a song title by another act. #86 Message in a Bottle - Police and Cheap Trick has Dream Police at #26 Was Dream Police really from the book 1984?
Casey said Pop Music - M couple weeks ago was number 1, last week 5 and this week 10. But it was 10 last week (11/17) and #5 the week before that.
#62 on the Country chart and dropping is "All the Gold in California" by Larry Gatlin and the Gatlin Brother Band. I have a memory of them performing this song on TV back at this time and they altered the words to say "All the Gold in California is in a bank in the middle of Beverly Hills in Kenny Roger's name" because Kenny was the King of Country back then. Oh wow. I just looked that up and on Facebook Charlie Daniels posted back in March 2020 about Kenny Rogers and a commenter said "I remember back when Kenny got so incredibly popular. Larry Gatlin presented him with one of his Grammy's. The Gatlin Brothers performed one of their hits during the show, and changed the chorus a little "All the gold in California, is in a bank in the middle of Beverly Hills, in Kenny Rogers' name. Does anyone else remember that?"

11/20/1976 #68 Baby Boy - Mary Kay Place (As Loretta Hagers) What is that credit about? Mary Kay Place played aspiring country singer Loretta Haggers on the satirical soap opera "Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman." She sang "Baby Boy" in character and it became a real-life hit for her (reaching #3 country.)

Oddly, Christine McVie, whom wrote and sang lead on `Over My Head` which is in the 1978 show, passed this morning (30 November). She was 79.
