Heart and Rush absolute joke that they haven't been in sooner. Donna Summer, I understand because of the disco stigma. Although, her writing, voice, influence and dominance from 1977-1980 she have brought it sooner. In the end, everyone dies, so the important thing is that she is now part of the HOF. No one will remember the timing. She body of work speaks for itself.
I also love that Heart (Ann) covered Donna's "The Woman in Me" because they said Donna was one of their favorite artists.

^As long as sites like Future Rock Legends exist, people will see the time. In the end, it's just a matter of when they get inducted for many acts. The number of years waited is notable, though, as it gives an idea of the level of reverence some acts have compared to others. I like that two female-oriented acts are being induced this year.

Great to see Rush get in!
I'm pleasantly surprised by the induction of Randy Newman. I would not have predicted it. His songwriting has been scoring people hits for decades, and I feel his brand of wit in many of his own performances does not get the recognition it deserves. A very clever man.
Better late than never for Albert King. He's one of those blues men who's earned the respect of a wide variety of singers, but doesn't necessarily have public recognition that matches his great talent and critical acclaim. Curious to see who they'll involve in the performance of his material at the induction ceremony.
Public Enemy is clearly deserving. Glad they made it in right off like that.
Heart and Donna Summer are both artists I love. I guess we're far enough removed from Heart's corporate rock period for enough voters to be able to appreciate their general contributions to the field. While I don't think Summer's death is the only reason she's in, I do think it likely helped expedite her induction. Regardless, I do think she would have made it in eventually.
Overall, I can't complain about this year's selections. Still plenty of great artists who have yet to get in, but there's not a single artist in this crop that doesn't have at least a decent argument in its favor.

I'm very happy with this class. I would have voted for Public Enemy, Summer, Newman, Heart and the Meters if I had a ballot, so that's as close to perfect as it can get. Public Enemy are undoubtedly one of the greatest hip-hop acts ever. I listen to "Bring The Noise" and "911 Is A Joke" on a regular basis. Also, Flavor Flav is now in the HoF, how awesome is that? Heart have created many a rock classic ("Crazy On You" = ). I'm glad to see them in. I predicted Albert King would be shoehorned into the Early Influence category like Freddie King and Wanda Jackson. I'm happy they inducted him into the correct category. Like everyone else, I'm sad Donna Summer did not live to see her induction. Still, there's no questioning her credentials. I'm not a huge fan of Rush, but they are deserving for their body of work. Lastly, I'm a major fan of Randy Newman. He's easily one of the greatest American singer-songwriters ever. His non-soundtrack albums hold examples of genius songwriting (and not just his early albums as I've seen many state, his Harps & Angels album from a couple years back showed that he's very much on top of his game. He takes on distinctly American points of view in his songwriting, showcasing the very best ("Something Special," "New Orleans Wins The War") and the very worst ("Rednecks," "Political Science") of the country. He has written amazing love songs like "Feels Like Home" that never delve into the saccharine or cliché, risqué blues standards like "You Can Leave Your Hat On," and songs with a wonderful sense of U.S. history (like his crowning achievement, "Sail Away" in which he takes on the role of a slave trader luring island natives to the new world for auction, or "Dixie Flyer," a story of immigrants migrating across the U.S.). His observances of human nature in songs like "God's Song (That's Why I Love Mankind)" are funny and sad at once. Love this class.

It would be cool if they could get Clapton or Bonamassa to do it. Clapton was actually my first thought. He'd kill a tribute. Hadn't thought about Joe Bonamassa; he'd be a slightly more left field choice, but no less appropriate.

lmao. I'm sorry. We don't really know anything yet, though, since it's Xtina and J-Hud. Will one of them give the speech and one of them perform? Will they both give the speech? Will someone else give the speech and both perform? Last year for Laura Nyro, Bette Midler gave the speech and Sara Bareilles performed, so any of those options are possible.

Bette Midler's speech for Laura Nyro had me weeping like a baby when I saw that last year (lmfao), but yeah you make a valid point. Christina Aguilera is just so off and on with her live vocals these days that it just made me have that instant reaction after reading it, lol. At the end of the day I am just happy Donna is being inducted in the first place. I have a feeling both Christina and Jennifer will be performing though honestly.

The induction ceremony took place last night.
The Rock Hall site updated bios to include which members of the groups were inducted. As posted by Future Rock Legends:
For Rush, obviously Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson and Neil Peart are being honored. John Rutsey, who was the drummer on Rush’s debut album, is not being inducted.
Only the original 70’s era members of Heart are getting in, despite the band’s continued success in the ensuing decades with other members. The inductees are Ann Wilson, Nancy Wilson, Roger Fisher, Steve Fossen, Howard Leese and Michael DeRosier.
Only four members of first ballot Hall of Famers Public Enemy are being inducted -- Chuck D, Flavor Flav, Professor Griff and Terminator X. The Bomb Squad, the influential production team behind PE’s sound, are not included, nor is current and longtime member, DJ Lord.

Is it too early to talk about the 2014 ceremony? www.futurerocklegends.com/year.php?eligible_year=2013These artists released their first recording in 1988, which makes them eligible for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2013 (the induction ceremony will be held the year following the voting process, in 2014) Nirvana is a lock.

^Oh yah- would be highly surprising if it didn't end up on the ballot and be a first-year-eligible inductee.
I'll change the title to a more general one.

Nirvana is a no brainer, at least from our perspective.
By the time we hit the 90's, I can imagine a lot of old timers will be overlooked (again, actually).

Not sure there are THAT many no-brainers coming from the 90s (based on how the committee has selected acts over the last several years).
After Nirvana, Pearl Jam may be one from the 90s to get in when eligible, or not that long after. I don't see the hall giving strong consideration to pop-oriented acts upon their eligibility. Maybe a rap/hip-hop group, though I'm not sure off-hand who becomes eligible in the 90s.

Yeah, not a ton of 90s no-brainers, although possibly more than the 80s. Pearl Jam, Smashing Pumpkins, Green Day, Radiohead, Beck, Nine Inch Nails, Oasis, 2Pac, Notorious B.I.G., Jay-Z, and Mary J. Blige immediately spring to mind. I don't know that Mariah will get in, given the continued exclusion of Barbra Streisand and Whitney Houston. Boyz II Men and TLC may have a shot after several nominations. Destiny's Child may not get in but Beyonce as a solo act will be a lock when she's eligible.

Remember the rumor that the HOF felt a lot of the late 80s artists were so weak that they were going to lower the 25 years to 20 years so they could fast track a few artists?
I'm glad they didn't do it.
They need to play catch up now like they did with Heart, Rush and Donna Summer.

Yeah, 25 years is a good amount of time. Some cement their status long before then, of course.
I don't see Boyz II Men being seriously considered; TLC, possibly.
Green Day would be one who probably will be considered immediately upon eligibility.

I could see Alanis possibly making it in, but it would take probably 6 or 7 nominations. Maybe as they hit the dregs of the early 2000s (the same way the mid-80s doldrums have been great for previously overlooked 70s artists).

Not sure about Alanis- I doubt she'd be a first-year inductee, or close to it. {jagged...[/i] was hugely impactful, but did anything after that really make its mark like anything from that album? (not speaking commercially)

That's why I was thinking Alanis might have a chance (after several noms) once we get to the late 90s/early 2000s drought. Off the top of my head, the only likely candidates from that era are Eminem, the White Stripes, Justin Timberlake, the Black Keys, Foo Fighters, OutKast, and maybe Britney, No Doubt, and Missy Elliot.
Norah Jones will probably be forgotten by the time she's eligible; I don't know about Christina or 50 Cent, and there's zero chance for Jennifer Lopez, Ja Rule, Ashanti, the Backstreet Boys, Limp Bizkit, 3 Doors Down, Goo Goo Dolls, Lil Jon, Creed, Nickelback, Sugar Ray, Smash Mouth, etc etc etc.

Janet might score a spot late into the 2000 doldrums, even though her career is mostly over.
It wouldn't seem right for Britney to get in before Janet.

Why not induct Cher? It's complete crap especially when you see some of the other acts inducted!

Why not induct Cher? It's complete crap especially when you see some of the other acts inducted! The music tastes of the voters, pretty much. Those who grew up on the "classic rock, soul, and hip hop music is best" mentality.
