Excellent song. Forgettable? Now, probably. I think it was decently popular in the late nineties. I think there are some #1 songs that are more forgettable from the 90s. Although it is pretty obscure now, "4 Seasons Of Loneliness" at least has the advantage of being by an iconic act. Unlike these moldy oldies that topped the Hot 100: Divine, "Lately" Tommy Page, "I'll Be Your Everything" Surface, "The First Time" Timmy T, "One More Try" Sweet Sensation, "If Wishes Came True" Glenn Medeiros ft. Bobby Brown, "She Ain't Worth It" Not to mention other big acts of the era who topped the chart with songs that haven't been heard since the Clinton administration: Roxette, "Joyride" Karyn White, "Romantic" Wilson Phillips, "You're In Love," "Release Me" Whitney Houston, "All The Man That I Need" Mariah Carey, "My All," "I Don't Wanna Cry" R. Kelly & Celine Dion, "I'm Your Angel" Madonna, "This Used To Be My Playground" Not saying these are necessarily bad songs (I love quite a few of them), but I would imagine there's a foot of dust on their recurrent numbers. Most of those songs are not forgettable to people who listened to the raido back then. I'll give you the Boys2men, Tommy Paige, Celine/ R Kelly and Divine hits but I think the rest of them made an impact.

^Actually, I don't remember any of those songs listed in the first set. The second set of songs I remember pretty well though.

Over on the Digital Songs chart, K-pop phenomenon Psy dances his way to No. 1 for the first time with "Gangnam Style." The single sizzles up three slots with 301,000 downloads sold last week (up 60%).
It displaces Taylor Swift's "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together," which slips to No. 3 with 196,000 (down 13%). Rising up one slot (3-2) is Maroon 5's "One More Night" with 205,000 (up 7%).
fun.'s "Some Nights" ascends 5-4 (159,000; up 4%), Alex Clare's "Too Close" climbs 6-5 (131,000; down less than 1%) and Flo Rida's "Whistle" jumps 10-6 (123,000; up 12%).
Kanye West, Jay-Z and Big Sean's "Clique" tumbles 2-7 (122,000; down 42%), Owl City and Carly Rae Jepsen's "Good Time" rises 11-8 (112,000; up 8%) and P!nk's "Blow Me (One Last Kiss)" drops 7-9 (105,000; down 10%).
Rounding out the top 10 is the chart's highest debut: Christina Aguilera's "Your Body" begins at No. 10 with 103,000. Released on Monday, Sept. 17, "Your Body" is Aguilera's first top 10 as a lead artist on the Digital Songs chart since 2008, when "Keeps Gettin' Better" peaked at No. 5. "Your Body" is the lead single from Aguilera's fifth studio album, "Lotus," due out Nov. 13.
Digital track sales this past week totaled 23.53 million downloads, up 3% compared with last week (22.88 million) and up 13% stacked next to the comparable week of 2011 (20.76 million). Year-to-date track sales are at 985.97 million, up 6% compared with the same total at this point last year (931.37 million).

Ohhh dear will PSY be #1 this week. I guess it will come down to streaming. I knew it was gonna be a fast rise to the top but I thought for sure it would be a Top 5 this week and not a #1 single this week. Glad I was wrong. GS is #5 on Spotify from what I can tell. #1 is definitely a possibility this week.

"One More Night" has no business being #1 in any form.

GS is beating Maroon 5 on Spotify and Sales. I think #1 is probably likely....

If "One More Night" has the points it takes to be No. 1, then it deserves it. if "Gangnam Style" does, then it deserves it. This ain't a quality chart. :)

Most of those songs are not forgettable to people who listened to the raido back then. I'll give you the Boys2men, Tommy Paige, Celine/ R Kelly and Divine hits but I think the rest of them made an impact. I started following the Hot 100 in December of 1989 so I definitely remember all those songs very well. "She Ain't Worth It" and "Romantic" are some particular favorites. But I don't know if anyone under 30 knows those songs now. And they aren't likely to get a resurgence, so they will probably just fall away into obscurity, remembered only by people who listened to the radio at that time. But that's every generation. Only a handful of hits truly transcend the era and are familiar to younger audiences (the Motown/British Invasion hits of the 60s, American Pie, Stayin' Alive, I Love Rock'n'Roll, etc). Or they get a weird resurgence like "Don't Stop Believin'" or "Never Gonna Give You Up." I just don't think the songs I listed made much of a lasting impact outside of 90s pop music fans. But "Gangnam Style" is one for the generations! Which is actually probably true, like "Ice Ice Baby" and "Macarena" :(

In 10 years (or less) nobody will even remember why the song "Gangnam Style," and the dance associated with it was ever popular in the first place.
It will not age well.

If Gangnam Style is #1, would that be the biggest jump to number one not fueled by a digital release? I know Adele broke it last year but it had a VMA performance while this would be on its own.

peigan68, while I tend to agree with you, ya never know: By 1992, nobody thought "Ice Ice Baby" would be remembered twenty years later. And in 1997, I never expected my young children in 2012 to know what the Macarena was. These things tend to take on a life of their own via nostalgia. Then there's the Ying to that Yang: Laffy Taffy....

I started following the Hot 100 in 1981/1982.
I would listen to Casey's Top 40 each week to find out the new Hot 100. I remember being so surprised that Olivia Newton John's Physical spent 10 weeks at #1 and that Foreigner was stuck behind her for 10 weeks.
In August 1983, I saw my first issue of Billboard. I would then see Billboard about every 2 weeks.
In March 1984, I went to a record store and they had the new Hot 100. I was shocked that Kenny Loggin's Footloose jumped 3 spots to #1!
My newspaper then started posting the Top 10 of the new Hot 100 and the new Billboard 200 each Friday morning.
In October 1985, CNN's Showbiz Tonight started doing the best thing ever. They showed the Top 10 of the new Hot 100 every Thursday night. That went on until at least 1992/1993.
Then Billboard started their website around 1995 and would update the Hot 100 on Thursdays.
You all have it so good now. There is all this information available before the Hot 100 comes out.

Novelty hits especially with a dance step like this will be remembered in the long run. PSY could be forgotten but Gangnam Style I think will be remembered. Anyway, we can never tell the future now so let's just wait and see ;) If Gangnam Style is #1, would that be the biggest jump to number one not fueled by a digital release? I know Adele broke it last year but it had a VMA performance while this would be on its own. Gangnam Style also had VMA exposure along with Today and SNL that help it rose to #1 in sales so it was not exactly on its own Anyway, I hope it hits #1 this week but I think it will fall short and end up at #2. Excited!

It could be the next Macarena or it could be the next Crack Dat Soulja Boy. Both were massive #1s with popular dances. One has become iconic, the other drifting into oblivion. We shall see.

My big things were walking to the local bookstore every tuesday copping a peak at Billboard to get the first look at all the charts. Oh and also staying up til like 1:30am on Friday night when my local TV station would air America's Top 10 with Casey. Weird this thread turned in a nostalgia trip. : )

Maroon 5 Still Tops Hot 100, PSY One Step From No. 1
As 'Gangnam Style' inches closes to No. 1, Christina Aguilera makes this week's biggest Hot 100 debut.
Maroon 5 keeps a fast-galloping PSY out of the Billboard Hot 100 summit, at least for this week, as "One More Night" spends a second week at No. 1 and tops the On-Demand Songs chart. PSY's "Gangnam Style," meanwhile, powered by buzz generated by its video in which the Korean rapper shows off his horse-imitating moves, rockets 11-2 on the Hot 100 and 4-1 on Digital Songs. "Night" remains at the Hot 100's apex with top Airplay Gainer honors for a fourth consecutive week, fueled by a 5-2 surge on Radio Songs (102 million audience impressions, up 21%, according to Nielsen BDS). It concurrently crowns On-Demand Songs, where it leaps 4-1 (775,000 on-demand streams, up 10%, according to BDS). "Night" returns to its No. 2 peak on Digital Songs with a 7% increase to 205,000 downloads sold in the chart's tracking week, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The song's string of four straight Airplay Gainer awards is the chart's longest since fun.'s "We Are Young," featuring Janelle Monae, earned the honor for six weeks in a row in March/April. At No. 2, PSY's worldwide hit "Gangnam Style" roars toward the Hot 100's top spot with the chart's top Digital Gainer tag, bounding from No. 11 (after debuting at No. 64 two weeks ago). The song surges in all fields that contribute to the Hot 100's data pool: it climbs 4-1 on Digital Songs (301,000, up 60%), 43-9 on On-Demand Songs (616,000, up 105%) and 68-34 on Radio Songs (34 million, up 79%). The song is likewise the top-gaining track on the mainstream top 40-driven Pop Songs radio airplay chart (28-19, up 95% in plays). With "Style" up by 67% in overall Hot 100 points and "Night" gaining by 12%, and the points gap between the two songs tight this week, the stage could be set for PSY to trot into the chart's winner's circle as soon as next week. Also on-watch: Rihanna's new single "Diamonds," which hit radio and retail today and could make a lofty launch on the Hot 100 next week. Fun.'s "Some Nights" bullets again at No. 3 on the Hot 100, rising 5-4 on Digital Songs (159,000, up 4%) and 11-9 on Radio Songs (81 million, up 18%). On On-Demand Songs, the song slips 1-2 (767,000, down 1%). Taylor Swift's former three-week No. 1 "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" dips 2-4 on the Hot 100 and vacates the top spot on Digital Songs after spending its first five frames at No. 1 (196,000, down 13%). (It's sold 1.9 million since its release.) Still, "Never" advances 6-3 on Radio Songs (95 million, up 14%). Again worth noting this week: "Never" continues not to register subscription streaming points on the Hot 100, as it has not yet been made available to on-demand streaming services that also contribute to the Hot 100's tabulation. ("Never" also, thus, has yet appear on On-Demand Songs). Meanwhile, look for a second preview track from Swift's Oct. 22 album "Red" to storm the Hot 100 next week, as "Begin Again" currently ranks at No. 1 in the iTunes Store. The song will serve as the next country radio (but not pop) single. (Non-album charity song "Ronan" debuted and peaked at No. 16 on the Hot 100 and No. 2 on Digital Songs two weeks ago.) As she tops the Billboard 200 for the first time with new album "The Truth About Love," P!nk holds at No. 5 on the Hot 100 with "Blow Me (One Last Kiss)," which logs a second week atop Radio Songs (114 million, up 16%) and charges 26-10 on On-Demand Songs (470,000, up 17%). As previously reported, the cut becomes her eighth No. 1 on Pop Songs. P!nk concurrently bows at No. 56 on the Hot 100 with "Truth" track "Try," which enters Digital Songs at No. 15 (80,000). RCA Records has confirmed that the song is the next radio single from the set and will begin promoting it to pop stations in late October. Rounding out the Hot 100's top 10, Flo Rida's former two-week No. 1 "Whistle" slides 4-6, followed by Justin Bieber's "As Long as You Love Me," featuring Big Sean (6-7); Owl City and Carly Rae Jepsen's "Good Time" (9-8); Alex Clare's "Too Close" (8-9); and Ellie Goulding's "Lights" (7-10). Christina Aguilera makes the Hot 100's splashiest arrival, as "Your Body" soars in at No. 34. The lead single from Aguilera's fifth studio album, "Lotus," due Nov. 13, starts at No. 10 on Digital Songs with sales of 103,000, while approaching Radio Songs with a 17% gain to 16 million. On Pop Songs, the song ascends 33-28 (up 81%) in its second week. While "Not Myself Tonight," the first single from Aguilera's last studio set, 2010's "Bionic," entered the Hot 100 at a higher rank than "Body" (No. 23, where it peaked), it did so with a lower sales sum (77,000). Check Billboard.com tomorrow (Sept. 27), when all rankings, including the Hot 100 and On-Demand Songs in their entirety and Digital Songs and Radio Songs, will be refreshed, as they are each Thursday.

'Try' debuts at #51 OK for 'Your Body' debuting in the Top 40. Not bad.

I was hoping that if Gangnam Style didn't hit #1 this week that it would hit #3 so that Some Nights could get a #2 peak; but looks like they're pretty much locked into that #3 peak now. Can't wait for Gangnam Style to go to #1.

One More Night 205,000 downloads 775,000 on-demand streams, 102 million audience impressions
Gangnam Style Digital Songs 301,000 On-Demand Songs 616,000, Radio Songs 34 million,
How close must this have been....

205*1 = 205 775*.1 = 77.5 102*1.5 = 153 Total: 435.5
301*1 = 301 616*.1 = 61.6 34*1.5 = 51 Total: 413.6
It makes perfect sense. This isn't one of those weird weeks where it doesn't.

Good PSY can stay at #2 one more week. The next week 1D will break sales records and reach #1.
KEEP PSY AT #2!
