from David's website: 8 JANUARY 2013 New Website, Album, Single And Video For The Birthday Boy "Secret secrets never seen..." Welcome to the relaunched DavidBowie.com and a whole bunch of exciting new things that you've no doubt already found on the splash page. The site is a work in progress right now as we continue to import historical data such as The Forum and past news, so please bear with us. However, if you're anything like us you'll be too interested in David Bowie's new music to worry too much about anything else right now. We'll leave you with the press release for The Next Day and Where Are We Now?, but be sure to pop back later today for more regarding all of this and more... ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Where is David Bowie? New Single and Pre-Order of First New Album in 10 Years Exclusively Launching on the iTunes Store Today New York, NY--January 8, 2013--In the early morning hours of Tuesday the 8th January, Iso/Columbia Records released a new single by David Bowie titled 'Where Are We Now?' exclusively launching in the iTunes Store in 119 countries. David Bowie's first new album in ten years and his 30th studio recording, THE NEXT DAY is also available as a pre-order on iTunes with a wide release scheduled for March. January the 8th is of course David Bowie's birthday, a timely moment for such a treasure to appear as if out of nowhere. Throwing shadows and avoiding the industry treadmill is very David Bowie despite his extraordinary track record that includes album sales in excess of 130 million not to mention his massive contributions in the area of art, fashion, style, sexual exploration and social commentary. It goes without saying that he has sold out stadiums and broken ticket records throughout the world during this most influential of careers. In recent years radio silence has been broken only by endless speculation, rumor and wishful thinking ....a new record...who would have ever thought it, who'd have ever dreamed it! After all David is the kind of artist who writes and performs what he wants when he wants...when he has something to say as opposed to something to sell. Today he definitely has something to say. Produced by long term collaborator Tony Visconti, 'Where Are We Now?' was written by Bowie, and was recorded in New York. The single is accompanied by a haunting video directed by Tony Oursler which harks back to David's time in Berlin. He is seen looking in on footage of the auto repair shop beneath the apartment he lived in along with stark images of the city at the time and a lyric constantly raising the question Where Are We Now? "The moment you know, you know you know" resonates from the new single's lyric. Now we all know...David Bowie has been in the recording studio...just when we least expected it!! ------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Next Day tracklisting Standard Version: 01. "Where Are We Now?" is nice. It obviously doesn't even vaguely compare to David's best work, but I was sceptical he'd ever release any new music again, so it's cool to have. It's currently number one on UK iTunes, but supposedly won't be eligible for the official chart. Here's what's apparently the album cover: I prefer this:

Apparently you have to pre-order the album to get the single. So for chart purposes it counts as a free download that you receive when you buy The Next Day. That's what I read, anyway.

WTF is that music video? The song is very depressing, but it's nice in that way. I wonder if the whole album will have that vibe.

Are you sure it doesn't charge you at the time of pre-ordering the album? I know promotions here like MDNA you pre-order the album for free, the single downloads immediately, and you pay $1.29. Then when you download the album it's being completed so it's $X - $1.29. I don't see iTunes giving away a free song when you can then cancel the pre-order...

So sad this flopped so hard in the US. At least it made the top 100, I think.

What did? The new track? Didn't it just come out? I still expect the album to do well. Possibly a #1 debut since the release period is still slow. I've never owned a Bowie album before but I plan on getting this one. Mostly because it's a slow period and I'm itching for new music but also because I feel like I need to know more Bowie and I like to start new and go backwards.

Ooh. Yeah. I'm not sure how well it did. As far as radio, I think only the rock stations would have played it and even then, maybe only classic rock or rock itself despite the song being fairly soft. The new one might be more suitable. Bowie's best bet would be word of mouth, iTunes and hype from longtime fans. Though if he tours he can likely be guaranteed a sold out your I would think.

www.hitsdailydouble.com/news/rumormill.cgiTHEY COULD BE HEROES: Fresh off a glowing four-star Rolling Stone rave and plenty of online buzz for the new video of "The Stars (Are Out Tonight)," David Bowie's The Next Day, his long-awaited first album in a decade, is gaining momentum for Rob Stringer's Columbia Records. Brisk pre-orders now have the forecast rising to over 100k. Could it vie for #1 on next week's chart? Stay tuned. (3/5p)

So sad this flopped so hard in the US. At least it made the top 100, I think. Even though David may not get a mainstream hit single with this record (it could always happen later if it did), I can see the album performing fine. He does have a fairly well-established fanbase who are more likely to buy albums. Maybe not a huge amount, but it could be a consistent seller week-to-week. There is a certain amount of anticipation for a new album from him as it has been so long. Even though I am not his biggest fan (I'm still new to his music) I never thought I would see another new album released by him. I've never owned a Bowie album before but I plan on getting this one. Mostly because it's a slow period and I'm itching for new music but also because I feel like I need to know more Bowie and I like to start new and go backwards. I am not super familiar with his music, but from what I have heard, it's safe to say that a lot of the albums are best enjoyed as a whole/in their entirety versus just a few tracks, depending on what you like. It's worth checking out. The worst thing that could happen is that you don't like it all. Try it out. You may become a David Bowie stan. :) www.hitsdailydouble.com/news/rumormill.cgiTHEY COULD BE HEROES: Fresh off a glowing four-star Rolling Stone rave and plenty of online buzz for the new video of "The Stars (Are Out Tonight)," David Bowie's The Next Day, his long-awaited first album in a decade, is gaining momentum for Rob Stringer's Columbia Records. Would love to see it reach 100k+ in its first week. #1 would be even better.

David Bowie tops UK charts with comeback album(Reuters) - David Bowie returned to the top of the British album charts on Sunday for the first time in 20 years with a collection of new recordings acclaimed by one critic as the "greatest comeback in rock'n'roll history". "The Next Day", recorded in secret over two years, shot straight to number one in its first week on release, shifting over 94,000 copies to become the fastest-selling album of 2013, the Official Charts Company said. Bowie surprised fans and the music industry in January with the unexpected release of the single "Where Are We Now?" on his 66th birthday and the announcement that an album of fresh recordings would be issued in March. He had shunned the limelight since suffering a heart attack on tour in 2004 and last performed on stage since 2006. Produced by his long-time collaborator Tony Visconti, "The Next Day" is Bowie's first new work since "Reality" a decade ago, and his first chart-topping success since 1983 1993's "Black Tie White Noise". Critics have showered praise on the album, which topped digital iTunes charts in 40 countries in the days after its release on March 8, according to Bowie's official website. "David Bowie's 'The Next Day' may be the greatest comeback album ever," said The Independent's Andy Gill in a five-star review. The question will now be how the recording fares in the United States, where Bowie has never had a number one album. American sales data from Billboard will show on Wednesday whether Bowie has outsold "What About Now", a rival new release from U.S. rockers Bon Jovi, beaten into second place in the British charts. Also new in the week's album rankings were British synth-pop duo Hurts at number nine with "Exile". In the singles charts Justin Timberlake held on to the top spot with "Mirrors", while former Pussycat Doll singer Nicole Scherzinger was new at number six with "Boomerang". www.reuters.com/article/2013/03/17/britain-charts-idUSL6N0C92KY20130317

David Bowie Releases 'The Next Day' VideoDavid Bowie has released the third video from his album "The Next Day," writing, conceiving and starring in a clip for the album's title track. Floria Sigismondi, the photographer and filmmaker who wrote and directed "The Runaways" and directed Justin Timberlake's "Mirrors," directed the Bowie film. She also directed the last Bowie video, "The Stars (Are Out Tonight)," which featured Tilda Swinton. Gary Oldman and Marion Cotillard, who won the Academy Award for her portrayal of Edith Piaf, co-star in the video, which takes place in a pub with a cast of characters straight out of Vatican City. Oldman portrays a priest who at one point condemns the Christ-like Bowie, the frontman in the band playing at the bar. There's also a Cardinal handing out cash, a praying nun and a saintly character played by Cotillard. Oldman and Bowie worked together previously on 1996's "Basquiat" with Bowie portraying Andy Warhol and Oldman in the role of fellow painter, Julian Schnabel. Both men sang on a 1995 solo album from Reeves Gabrels, a member of Bowie's Tin Machine, titled "The Sacred Squall of Now." UPDATE: YouTube has removed Bowie's new video because it violated the site's Terms of Service. Billboard has reached out to YouTube and Bowie's rep for comment and clarification on the decision.
UPDATE 2: The video is back on YouTube. A spokesperson told Billboard via email that it was taken down by mistake. "With the massive volume of videos on our site, sometimes we make the wrong call. When it's brought to our attention that a video has been removed mistakenly, we act quickly to reinstate it."

David Bowie 'signs up to be face of Louis Vuitton', according to reportsDavid Bowie has signed up to be the face of Louis Vuitton, according to reports. According to WWD, Bowie will be the face of the fashion house's L’Invitation au Voyage campaign alongside model Arizona Muse, who appeared in the first round of advertising last year. It is reported that Bowie shot a TV advert in Venice earlier this year, which is due to be aired later this year. Other musicians who have starred in Vuitton campaigns in the past include Bono, Keith Richards and Madonna. Meanwhile, Bowie is currently one of William Hill's favourite to win the 2013 Barclaycard Mercury Prize, after the nominations were announced earlier this month (September 11). Arctic Monkeys' recently released fifth album 'AM' and David Bowie's 'The Next Day' both have odds of 4/1, according to the event's official bookies. Albums by Foals, James Blake and Laura Marling are also on the shortlist for the 12 Albums Of The Year, which was chosen by an independent judging panel and announced today at London's Hospital Club. London Grammar were previously named as the favourite for the 2013 prize by bookmakers, but their album 'If You Wait' was not nominated. The winner will be announced at a ceremony in London's Roundhouse on October 30. www.nme.com/news/david-bowie/72885#hsWbuXhsR6dCiJQV.99

Bowie will release the three-disc collector's edition, The Next Day Extra, on November 5th. The new edition will include the original 14-track album, a second disc with five previously unreleased songs and a DVD with four videos for tunes on the album. Murphy lent his talents on a 10-minute remix of "Love Is Lost." The two also worked together recently on Arcade Fire's new single "Reflektor." David Bowie: 'More music soon' By Alice Vincent David Bowie surprised the world in 2013 when he released his first single in a decade, Where Are We Now, but the musician has given a little more warning about his forthcoming new material. A statement from Bowie was read out on Saturday at a fundraising event for the Terrance Higgins Trust in a bar in Denmark Alley, London. It read: "This city is even better than the one you were in last year, so remember to dance, dance, dance. And then sit down for a minute, knit something, then get up and run all over the place. Do it. Love on ya. More music soon. David" Bowie's spokesperson confirmed to the NME that the singer had written the statement. The Next Day, which Bowie released in March 2013, was recorded in great secrecy, with the singer having to change studios after rumours leaked that he was making new music. The record went on to top the UK charts and peak at number two in the US Billboard charts. Many fans hoped that the new material would encourage Bowie to perform live for the first time since 2006, but he is yet to announce any plans to tour and didn't even appear at the opening of his V&A retrospective, David Bowie Is. When he won Best British Male at the Brit Awards in February, he sent Kate Moss to collect the award for him, with the speech: ""I'm completely delighted to have a Brit for being the best male - but I am, aren't I Kate? Yes. I think it's a great way to end the day. Thank you very, very much and Scotland stay with us." Source

David Bowie Reportedly Releasing New Album Blackstar In January Peter Helman @_peterhelman | 2:20 pm
David Bowie is releasing the follow-up to 2013’s The Next Day in January, The Times Of London reports. It’s called Blackstar, and it was recorded at NYC’s Magic Shop studio with local jazz musicians. A short excerpt from the 10-minute title track was recently used as the theme song for the British TV series The Last Panthers, and the full track, which will also appear in Bowie’s upcoming musical play Lazarus, apparently features “Gregorian chants, a soul section, various electronic beats and bleeps and Bowie’s distinctive vocals.” The Times describes the rest of the 7-song LP as “an album of long, jazzy jams mixed with the kind of driving beat pioneered by Seventies German bands Can and Kraftwerk,” and according to a “Bowie insider” who’s already heard the record, it’s “completely bonkers.” There’s no official confirmation yet, but Blackstar is supposedly coming out 1/8, on Bowie’s 69th birthday, and the title track will be out next month on 11/19. Listen to an excerpt of “Blackstar” and check out the full Times article below.
