Now that she's doing well at country radio, they go "it's all because of the label, her single isn't popular, it's not selling well and sales are the most important thing" I haven't seen anyone complain about the sales of "Begin Again"? Regardless, here's its chart run on country: 37-29-23-21-19-17-16-15-14-14-14-12-10-10-10-10-08-08-08-06-03 I think it's pretty clear that label manipulation was involved in that.

Well, Begin Again isn't even top 100 iTunes, whereas Two Black Cadillacs, Better Dig Two (it's a lead single, but still), etc are top 100. And Taylor is supposed to be a massive seller, so not being top 100 is odd.

It's sold ~780k from what I can tell, which is still more than most country hits.

But it's a Taylor song. For her it's underperforming, that's what people are saying. It's not a flop in sales at all, just not selling like she normally would. And it's got more airplay than "Two Black Cadillacs" fyi.

Eh, at this rate I don't even care. I've said it a bunch of times before in the "Begin Again" thread and both Joe and josh mentioned the oddities about its extremely sluggish chart run and smaller sales (it's still Gold and will surely go Platinum); Big Machine needs to let it go and release "All Too Well". I'm very sure that ATW would easily go #1 on Country Airplay, and having BA peak at #3 certainly isn't anything to scoff at.

And Taylor is supposed to be a massive seller, so not being top 100 is odd. It is odd/ironic that "We Are Never..." benefited greatly from the rule change, and now "Begin Again" is suffering from the rule change. Perhaps it just shows that Swift's pop fans buy her music, while her country fans are more content to hear her on the radio? Or we have been overestimating how much of her sales/popularity is due to the country audience?

"Begin Again" is just a meh song. I'm not shocked it's not selling as well as a Taylor Swift song should. It just doesn't stand out. Her next country only single (which I guess isn't coming out until after the "Highway" songs dies?) will most likely sell better. I mean, don't you guys remember how quickly it fell out of the top ten when it was released as a countdown single when compared to "Red" and "I Knew You Were Trouble."?

1 - My Heart Will Go On - Celine Dion (1st week of 2 @ #1) Love or hate it, this was a generation defining song from a similiar movie.

10 13 Independent - Webbie ft. Lil Phat & Lil Boosie ... ??? I-N-D-E-P-E-N-D-E-N-T do you know what that means?!Songs like that are the entire reason the word 'ratchet' exists. I mean, don't you guys remember how quickly it fell out of the top ten when it was released as a countdown single when compared to "Red" and "I Knew You Were Trouble."? Red and IKYWT were also the more pop-friendly of her countdown singles, IMO, so I think that has something to do with it. I do hope that is a good sign that "Red" will be an eventual single for both country and pop though. I don't think BA is meh but it does feel like the kind of song that moves albums more than it does singles, as I somewhat alluded to above. There's a reason why it's the standard album closer...album-ending songs usually have a finality to them that doesn't necessarily translate to radio friendliness, if that makes any sense. BA should probably have been the closing single for the era rather than released so early. No biggie though, it's still serving its purpose.

I don't see anything really rachet about it other than it sounds like music black people who live in poor neighborhoods would like.

5 years ago was a pretty visual transition between what had been for 8 years (Webbie, T-Pain, Snoop), and what was changing musically (Chris Brown and Rihanna's acoustic r&b and dance r&b respectively). I still recall thinking by 2005 that US radio demographics had shifted so much that the top 20 radio songs would be hip-hop dominated for another 10 years. (And this is from someone who has followed trends for 30 years!) I could never imagine a day again when the top 5 wasn't dominated by the latest rapper du jour.

Billboard.com:
ver on the Digital Songs chart, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis' "Thrift Shop" (featuring Wanz) reigns for a sixth week. It logs its best sales week yet, moving 412,000 downloads (up 6%). In a somewhat distant second place is Rihanna's "Stay" (featuring Mikky Ekko), which drives 25-2 with 306,000 (up 358%). The song was performed on the Grammy Awards, while its music video also debuting during the tracking week.
Baauer's red-hot "Harlem Shake" debuts at No. 3 on Digital Songs with 262,000 (up 1,359% from 18,000). The song -- as featured in countless YouTube viral videos -- was released commercially last June. It didn't start to sell significant units until a week ago, when it moved 18,000 after the "Harlem Shake" meme began to take hold.
Bruno Mars' "When I Was Your Man" is steady at No. 4 with 217,000 (up 36%), Justin Timberlake's "Suit & Tie" (featuring Jay-Z) rises 8-5 (201,000; up 67%) and the Lumineers' "Ho Hey" is stationary at No. 6 (192,000; up 30%). The latter two songs were both performed on the Grammy Awards.
Drake's new single "Started From the Bottom" flies 32-8 with 168,000 (up 185%) after its first full week of sales. The song debuted last week (ending Feb. 10) after four days of impact, as it was released on Feb. 7.
Timberlake's new song "Mirrors" enters the top 10 at No. 9 with 163,000, after it hit iTunes early on Monday morning, Feb. 11. The song -- from his forthcoming "20/20 Experience" album -- was either available as a stand-alone track purchase, or, as an instant-gratification download when a customer pre-ordered the album. (The customer was immediately charged for the track in either instance.)
Closing out the top 10 is will.i.am & Britney Spears' "Scream & Shout," which falls 2-10 with 158,000 (down 3%).
Owed mostly to buzz generated by the Grammy Awards, the entire top 16 titles on the Digital Songs chart all sell in excess of 100,000. The last time that happened -- not counting the Christmas holiday weeks -- was last April, when Easter helped push the top 16 all to 100,000-plus sales.
Digital track sales this past week totaled 29.43 million downloads, up 8% compared with last week (32.28 million) and down 9% stacked next to the comparable week of 2012 (32.23 million). Year to date track sales are at 200.41 million, down 1% compared to the same total at this point last year (202.78 million).

And that's not even a full week of being #1, just a couple days! :o Should be over 300k next week, that should be enough for top 3 I'm assuming.

Okay, so it wasn't just me not paying attention, the "Harlem Shake" phenomenon really did just explode out of no where. From 18K to 262K in a week? Crazy. The "Gangnam Style" of 2013? YouTube proves once again that it is probably the most powerful marketing tool in the music industry. Not sure if this is a record, but "Thrift Shop" has now sold more copies per week for 7 consecutive weeks. Songs that sell more than 200,000 usually fluctuate week to week in sales (last year "We Are Young" managed 6 consecutive weeks). I was surprised at the success of "Stay", I thought it would sell around 240K to 260K. Over 300,000 should guarantee it a top 10, with chart point totals over 27,000 (I had it pegged around 23,000).

WOW at "Thrift Shop"! its sales keep getting bigger and bigger per week. :o
#1 on the Hot 100 for a 5th week, 5 weeks left to tie "We Found Love" as the longest running #1 of this decade and 11 weeks left to tie "One Sweet Day" for all-time record. XD

XD It won't match the record of OSD. I think a lead single debuting in March or April will take the #1 spot, so 10 weeks are possible. And I read that people on pulse expected Someone Like You to top Hot 100 through the whole winter, but then WFL exploded. You never know...

My predictions always were made by airplay and sales. That made it less accurate, so now I also used streaming in it and I used the real Billboard formula. It's a lot more work, but I think it's a lot more accurate now. I'II post an update every day till Tuesday, when I have my final prediction. So, this prediction is not for today's chart, but for the one of next week (the 03/09/13 chart).Prediction for the 03/ 09/13 chart so far (with airplay, sales & streaming) #1 Macklemore & Ryan Lewis ft. Wanz - Thrift Shop (75.64163 points) |
#4 airplay, #1 sales, #1 streaming #2 Will.i.am. ft. Britney Spears - Scream & Shout (45.72749 points) |
#5 airplay, #7 sales, #3 streaming #3 Taylor Swift - I Knew You Were Trouble (44.04925 points) |
#1 airplay, #9 sales, no streaming #4 The Lumineers - Ho Hey (42.55424 points) |
#6 airplay, #10 sales, #2 streaming #5 Bruno Mars - Locked Out Of Heaven(41.81345 points) |
#2 airplay, #12 sales, #9 streaming #6 Bruno Mars - When I Was Your Man (40.01488 points) |
#16 airplay, #3 sales, #14 streaming #7 Swedish House Mafia - Don't You Worry Child (38.76261 points) |
#3 airplay, #22 sales, #6 streaming #8 Baauer - Harlem Shake (37.83337 points) |
#358 airplay, #2 sales, #24 streaming #9 Justin Timberlake ft. Jay-Z - Suit & Tie (35.45615 points) |
#9 airplay, #7 sales, #10 streaming #10 Maroon 5 - Daylight (31.03179 points) |
#7 airplay, #15 sales, #39 streaming Big songs outside the top 10: 11. Calvin Harris ft. Florence Welch - Sweet Nothing: 29.39945 points 12. Rihanna ft. Mikky Ekko - Stay: 28.44524 points 15. Mumford & Sons - I Will Wait: 25.38928 points 18. Drake - Started From The Bottom: 23.77909 points 25. One Direction - One Way Or Another: 18.66785 points 54. Pitbull ft. Christina Aguilera - Feel This Moment: 14.71196 points 102. P!nk ft. Nate Ruess - Just Give Me A Reason: 3.654203 points I really didn't expected that the gap between #1 and #2 would be so big. It looks like Thrift Shop will stay at #1 for a while.

#4 airplay, #1 sales, #1 streaming #2 Will.i.am. ft. Britney Spears - Scream & Shout (45.72749 points) |
#5 airplay, #7 sales, #3 streaming #3 Taylor Swift - I Knew You Were Trouble (44.04925 points) |
#1 airplay, #9 sales, no streaming #4 The Lumineers - Ho Hey (42.55424 points) |
#6 airplay, #10 sales, #2 streaming #5 Bruno Mars - Locked Out Of Heaven(41.81345 points) |
#2 airplay, #12 sales, #9 streaming #6 Bruno Mars - When I Was Your Man (40.01488 points) |
#16 airplay, #3 sales, #14 streaming #7 Swedish House Mafia - Don't You Worry Child (38.76261 points) |
#3 airplay, #22 sales, #6 streaming #8 Baauer - Harlem Shake (37.83337 points) |
#358 airplay, #1 sales, #24 streaming #9 Justin Timberlake ft. Jay-Z - Suit & Tie (35.45615 points) |
#9 airplay, #7 sales, #10 streaming #10 Maroon 5 - Daylight (31.03179 points) |
#7 airplay, #15 sales, #39 streaming That makes no sense. Thrift Shop and Harlem Shake both #1 at sales? IKYWT higher than Ho Hey? I made a mistake, Harlem Shake is #2 at sales. Remember that this prediction is NOT for today's chart, but for next week's chart (03/09/13).Ho Hey rose a lot last week, because of the Grammy's. Now, that boost is gone and it will drop again next week. It's true that Ho Hey will be #2 this week, but next week it will drop.

Why are you predicting next week's chart in this week's thread? (3/02/12). That is confusing, isn't it?

Year to date track sales are at 200.41 million, down 1% compared to the same total at this point last year (202.78 million).
The beginning of streaming taking over digital sales?

My predictions always were made by airplay and sales. That made it less accurate, so now I also used streaming in it and I used the real Billboard formula. It's a lot more work, but I think it's a lot more accurate now. I'II post an update every day till Tuesday, when I have my final prediction. So, this prediction is not for today's chart, but for the one of next week (the 03/09/13 chart).Prediction for the 03/09/13 chart so far (with airplay, sales & streaming) #1 Macklemore & Ryan Lewis ft. Wanz - Thrift Shop (75.64163 points) |
#4 airplay, #1 sales, #1 streaming #2 Will.i.am. ft. Britney Spears - Scream & Shout (45.72749 points) |
#5 airplay, #7 sales, #3 streaming #3 Taylor Swift - I Knew You Were Trouble (44.04925 points) |
#1 airplay, #9 sales, no streaming #4 The Lumineers - Ho Hey (42.55424 points) |
#6 airplay, #10 sales, #2 streaming #5 Bruno Mars - Locked Out Of Heaven(41.81345 points) |
#2 airplay, #12 sales, #9 streaming #6 Bruno Mars - When I Was Your Man (40.01488 points) |
#16 airplay, #3 sales, #14 streaming #7 Swedish House Mafia - Don't You Worry Child (38.76261 points) |
#3 airplay, #22 sales, #6 streaming #8 Baauer - Harlem Shake (37.83337 points) |
#358 airplay, #2 sales, #24 streaming #9 Justin Timberlake ft. Jay-Z - Suit & Tie (35.45615 points) |
#9 airplay, #7 sales, #10 streaming #10 Maroon 5 - Daylight (31.03179 points) |
#7 airplay, #15 sales, #39 streaming I am getting much lower totals for my predicitons. Are you using the following: Sales: 1 chart point = 12 downloads; Airplay: 1 chart point = 7,500 audience impressions; On-Demand: 1 chart point = 150 streams; Passive: 1 chart point = 300 streams.
