I think the next addition should be Last.fm scrobbles YES! If they're somehow able to combine the countless YouTube videos for one song, they should be able to do the same for Last.fm scrobbles. I'm sure it'd be really easy to find out which ones were passive and which were on-demand as well.

There's now hope for Biebz to finally get a #1 H100 song! Hell, "Baby" probably re-entered at #45 this week and will no doubt refuel his crazed fans and they'll refresh over and over to get it to #1.

For YouTube views... are they counting only views from IPs in the US? or from all over the world?

This new methodology will lead to less alternative songs getting high positions on the chart and more novelty and teen sensations (like Bieber and One Direction) topping the chart more often.
In other words, it sucks.

If WW views count, then the chart will benefit Latin acts a lot too.. ie J Lo and Pitbull

What I don't get is, if they are going to count every stream possible, why don't they count the airplay of every station possible? There are hundreds (thousands?) of radio stations that don't count toward the charts.

I looked at the youtube top 25 for the 1st time, since it is now a relevant chart. #1 on the 2/23/13 chart for the 20th non consecutive week was Gangnam Style by Psy

At least one thing they should do is divide up a Youtube view's point value depending on how long it's watched vs. how long the song is.
If I watch 7 30-second clips of Harlem Shake, it shouldn't count 7x as much as if I watch a 3.5 minute music video.
Lost in all this: Taylor news! In the Soundscan era (91+), the first white artist to make multiple albums that spawned a multi-week solo #1 radio hit: Taylor Swift! In this millennium, the first song to have multiple weeks on both the sales & radio charts, yet be robbed of an overall #1: I Knew You Were Trouble.

Yes, part of that is the songs are dance songs that become crazes, but that is different from people listening to a song on the radio or downloading it. This is making the Hot 100 a much more visual chart in terms of its measure. I am not yet sure how I feel about that.

Yeah, this isn't a good sign...
Youtube views needs to have a smaller weight. I honestly didn't know of the "Harlem Shake" until I saw #1 DEBUT. Then I was left dumbfounded over a song that I never heard before...

Then I was left dumbfounded over a song that I never heard before... Well I've seen people posting the youtube clips on facebook and stuff, but that's all a visual thing; "here, watch this dance!" I see that as a bit different from the song being popular. What's also funny is that the new dance being promoted isn't even the actual/original Harlem Shake.

There's now 6 components to the Hot 100: -Digital Track Sales -Airplay -Passive Streaming -On-Demand Streaming -YouTube Streaming -Physical Single Sales Do we know the weight of each of these elements? Could somebody please remind me the definitions of passive and on-demand streaming? Is it ONLY AUDIO online?

Then I was left dumbfounded over a song that I never heard before... The song was released months ago but it's only been a "thing" for about two weeks. Its last three weeks of sales are literally, not on Hot Digital Songs to 18K to 262K. But even for a viral sensation, its onslaught has been pretty sudden, it makes Gangnam Style's run look like Home's in comparison, a #1 debut really does reflect how the song became hot justlikethat.

And with each change, it appears airplay counts for less and less.
Not that that is necessarily a bad thing.

So how much exactly does 1 million youtube views count (relative to sales)?
It sounds like it's 2 million youtube views = 100k sales. That means 100 million YT views = 5 million digital sales!!
The sales/streaming ratio is totally out of whack!! If Billboard made a more reasonable ratio, maybe the negative reaction wouldn't be so bad.

jenglisbe, that might be the most clever use of a pic I've seen on this site ever. --- This YT thing, like Billboard's changes in 2012, is a decent idea ruined by idiocy. The big issue I have with HS being #1 (and this is coming from the one person on Pulse who actually likes it) is that I don't think there are that many people who actually are watching these HS videos for the song. Hell, I am pretty sure the sales it got are mostly due to people downloading the song so they could make their own "Harlem Shake V138943289432490" videos. I know to those crackpots at BB this might be a fine line on paper, but it really shouldn't take a genius to determine the difference between a song that went viral, and a meme that went viral and just happened to use a snippet of some random song. As for how this will affect artists in the future, I think it will create a lot of volatility at the top of the charts, but almost any current A or B-lister should see a benefit (well, until BB finally adjusts the weight). Think about it - any time Rihanna, Gaga, Beyonce, Katy, et. al. drops a lyric or official video they immediately get millions of votes that first week. Rihanna will sail past Mariah's 18 #1s in no time but hell, for that matter so would three or four other artists after a couple of solid eras. That's the other big problem, there are going to be a lot of artificial chart peaks that don't necessarily correlate to the true popularity of the songs in question. This idea is not dumb but its execution is. I see they still refuse to reveal the formula It's not like we're asking for a list of all 23 flavors in Dr. Pepper, for crying out loud. And we thought airplay got too many points.
