I just saw a Youtube video in which "Harlem Shake" faces off against "Gangnam Style". These stupid dance crazes are like cockraoches and dandelions, almost impossible to kill off. Some of the biggest songs in the history of the chart are from dance crazes - so this is nothing new The Twist Macarena etc

Don't need to remind me, I lived through the Macarena! YouTube will ensure that the current dance crazes have a much longer shelf-life. I guess I should be thankful it was not around in 1996.

^ Ha! QML, if you lived in Canada at the time, you went through Macarena mania twice! (Los Del Mar, Los Del Rio on Billboard!) It was painful.

Wow it was great a year ago, 6 of those top 10 songs all hit#1. I doubt we will be seeing that again any time soon.

I believe that's also the final chart before streaming was added in.

When I look at a Billboard Top 10 I count the # of songs I have on my Ipod. Looking at the list above, it is 7/10 for 2012, 5/10 for 2008, 3/10 for 2003 and 1/10 for 1998, but 3/5 for the airplay chart.
Confirms my suspicions that 1996-98 and 2002-04 were some of my least favourite years for pop music (1980-82, 1987-89 and 1974-75 we are also pretty bad in my books).

20 years ago this week is when I realized that the '80s model of the Hot 100 was really over. Not a bad thing, just the moment it crystalized for this long-timer.

When I look at the Top 10 from 1988, I think of the songs that should have been there, but were not due to the primitive (ie pre-Soundscan) methodology that was in place at the time. "Push It" by Salt-N-Pepa and "Pump Up The Volume" by M/A/R/R/S were both million sellers, but neither one got into the top 10.

Pump Up The Volume was a great song... But I swear to god it never gets recurrent airplay these days. Push It still does to some degree and even gets sampled.

It would have been all that much BIGGER. I must admit "The Twist" is one of the few dedicated dance songs that I like ("The Hustle" is another one). If Youtube had been around it would have likely spent 2+ years on the HOT 100, as it is it spent 38 weeks I believe.

Let's not forget about 'Crank That' which was number one for seven nonconsecutive weeks and produced a plethora of youtube videos including Dora the Explorer, Spiderman, and Spongebob. That song would have been a lot bigger if youtube views counted then.

1983 chart ... so influenced by MTV videos!
CHR did not know what to do with "Pump Up the Volume". That type of song was a dime-a-dozen in the UK at the time.

Pump Up the Volume is one of my all-time favorites!
I could have swore Whitney had three singles in the top 10 at one time in 1993. Did she just miss out on that?

Well, it looks like people are transitioning from "Harlem Shake" videos to goat videos. I've now seen gaot videos for IKYWT (the original), Friday, Party in the U.S.A., Firework, Rolling in the Deep, Titanium, etc. etc.
Maybe "Harlem" is about done?
