Great, another forgettable Maroon 5 song will spend 2 months at #1. No. It's peaking on pop right now, and it's only #4. It should move up to #3 on pop this week as Taylor falls below it, but it's pretty much done there, so it will begin to lose AI very soon. It still has a bit of wiggle room left on hot AC, but it's already #1 there, so it should be peaking on that format any day now too. I think #3 will be its airplay peak, to be honest. By the time Taylor falls below them, Justin and Bruno will be about ready to pass them up.

Nice to see "Madness" gaining at radio (Top40 & AdultTop40). Hopefully it will re-enter the HOT 100 in the coming weeks.

:o I just saw that too. Thought it was in 2007. It entered the top 10 in late 2007 then stuck around for what seemed like forever (and I liked the song). Ended up being one of the biggest songs of the 2008 chart year. Maybe I am being overly critical, but does anybody else feel that 2003 was one of the most forgettable years for popular music?

Maybe I am being overly critical, but does anybody else feel that 2003 was one of the most forgettable years for popular music? It's not overly critical, since it's just your opinion at the end of the day. But 2003 is actually my favourite ever year for mainstream music. :) My 2nd favourite year for me would be 2007. 2003 was good especially if you're a fan of club music. In Da Club, Ignition and Get Busy are some of the biggest club hits of this century, and they were all hits from 2003. Even today I'm almost guaranteed to hear those songs when I go clubbing, and I live in Europe!!

QML, it really is generational. Fred Bronson used to say that the music that is popular when you are 14 years old is usually the music that you love above all else.
For some kids born in 1989, 2003 was probably the best year of music ever! To many of us, it was right in the middle of when identity-crisis riddled CHR couldn't decide whether to go entirely hip-hop rhythmic, when the labels officially killed the commercial single (leading to Hot 100 chaos), and when some of the biggest pop stars in history couldn't get a hit.

I've always heard that, which is funny to me, because I was 14 in 2002/2003 and that's one of my least favorite periods for music in my lifetime. In the past few years, I've kind of grown out of most of the music on pop radio though.

I don't know about that 14-years-old business. 2008 was a pretty good year for music, but definitely not my favorite.

14 years old? That'd put me at August 2008 through July 2009. What were the #1 hits then? Disturbia, Whatever You Like, So What, Live Your Life, Womanizer, Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It), Just Dance, My Life Would Suck Without You, Crack a Bottle, Right Round, Poker Face, Boom Boom Pow, and I Gotta Feeling. Eh... not bad, but there are certainly some songs that I really don't like in there. However, 2009 is one of my favorite years of music in quite a while, but 2009 as a whole, not just the January-July portion. My favorite period of music, though, was 2002-2005.

Yah, that whole "People-think-the-best-music-is-from-when-they-were-growing-up" is malarkey. I enjoy some from the period of when I didn't know what music was, more than a lot of stuff that was out when I was growing up, or even from the last decade. if it is true for some, that may be because they don't really take the time to listen to older music.
Anyhow, 1998 was the year we had the peak of big radio hits not ranking on the Hot 100. Glad the rule change came at the end of the year.

I think it has more to do with reminiscing of teenage years. Music of a time period will always make you remember your life events of that time period and such. I certainly loved the music of 2006/2007 at the time, but no way I'd wanna re-live those years of my life.

I was born in 1986, and my favorite period of music is most definitely Motown of the 1960's.

I don't know that the people who post on Pulse are necessarily the best sample to try to demonstrate a rule about the music people like most. I think it's safe to say we generally interact more intensively with it than casual listeners, who might fall better in line with the hypothesis under discussion.

No. I still jam to literally half of that top 10. # 1, 6, 7 & 8 are on my IPod. I can barely recall the rest. I found as 2003 went on the HOT 100 became more and more predictable due to the lack of sales, and the dominance of R&B & hip-hop at Top40, to the almost total exclusion of other music. It wasn't until 2005 and the inclusion of digital downloads that the chart became more varied and interesting. That was also the year that my enthusiasm for the HOT 100 was renewed. All I can say is thank heavens for Itunes. I wonder what the Hot 100 would have been like had they included iTunes ever since it since it started in 2003. I don't know if it would've made that much of a difference though. I mean, in the UK it's an all sales chart, and R&B and hip hop still dominated there during that time (not as much as in the US of course, but still enough that it was causing pop fans to be very angry). On that note, I wonder if Lil Wayne will be back in the top 10 of the Hot 100 this week.

Many people seem to identify with music the most (for those who identify with music at all) during emotional or memorable and/or turbulent times in their life. For many that is puberty. For others that could be a different period. Is that a rule? no. I think it is common though

Digital in 2003 and 2004 was so new it would have had nearly zero impact That's true, but maybe Billboard might have weighted the sales differently had it happened. I might be wrong, but I believe digital sales had a higher weighting back in 2005 than they do today, so it's not unfeasible that if they had included downloads in 2003 they might have given them an even higher weighting. Similar with streaming today. Perhaps some years down the line as streaming gets increasingly popular, they might decrease the weighting because it could end up over-shadowing all the other components in the Hot 100. It's interesting to think about. Many people seem to identify with music the most (for those who identify with music at all) during emotional or memorable and/or turbulent times in their life. For many that is puberty. For others that could be a different period. Is that a rule? no. I think it is common though Yeah, you're correct. There've been studies on this as well, showing that people generally have a preference for the music during their teenage years. The key word here is "generally".

I always loved that Fred Bronson quote -- but I thought it was that your favorite album came out when you were 14 -- no relation to popularity at all. Which is true for me (Bjork's "Post"), even though there has been a lot of music over the years that I have loved.
