that may be true, but it DOES increase sales. Yes, it does Someone might not be able to afford a $2.99 cassette single, but can afford 49 cents. If you can't afford a meager $2.99 cassette single, you shouldn't be buying any singles, discounted or not, in the first place. I know 8 year old kids who pay more than that on school lunches everyday.

It's not always matter of affording to buy sth... I for example could well buy an album I sort of like only if it's cheap even if I could afford to pay the full price.
Some products are worth more than others.

^Exactly...so if you really want it, you'll buy it or find some way to get it.

Some products are worth more than others. This. It's a bit naive to think that price doesn't play into someone's decision to buy the single. I bought a single back in 2001 by an act I knew despite not knowing the song itself because it cost 1 cent. When I was buying singles, I would also sometimes grab a 99 cent single even if I didn't love the song just to have it since it was dirt cheap. It's unlikely someone's going to spend anything on a single they hate, but they may grab a single by a song they're kind of indifferent toward or by an act they like despite never having heard the song because the single is so cheap. I think this has changed a bit with digital singles, because $1.29 is now generally the norm, and you're not getting anything physical for your money. Still, when hits are discounted to 69 cents, they regularly see a big gain.

I think people under-estimate the impact of iTunes gift cards. Little kids aren't accountants or anything, but they're still able to understand "I only have 10$$ on this gift card. I want to buy more songs than I can afford, but I'll pick this Bruno Mars single over this Rihanna single because the Bruno Mars single is currently cheaper and I might be able to squeeze in a purchase of an extra older song that's also 0.69$$ right now!"

Obviously I'm referring to back then. I just didn't say 'paid' instead of pay.

many thanks for those links, interesting reads! I was actually wondering just the other day why "Breakdown" wasn't listed with "My All" on the Hot 100 (I knew both had charted on Hot 100 Airplay), and one of the articles in that BB issue explains it. it's a bit sad to see that Mariah's chart-toppers are somewhat "tainted"...but if we delegitimize every No. 1 that benefitted from a discount, or strategically-timed physical/digital release, or radio deal, or strategically-timed remix release, etc., we'd be looking at quite a few tunes over the years.

Yes. Mariah, like R&B, is a popular scapegoat here. :'( UCTT was only released as a 12 inch single. Mariah is a popular scapegoat here because she discounted single after single after single. It wasn't just one... It wasn't all of them either. It wasn't Mariah herself either. It wasn't only her label who did that either...every label has done it for most of their artists. People love to focus on Mariah because she has the 2nd most #1's.
